Raid Kills 32 Suspected Iraq Militants

(CBS/AP)  A U.S.-led raid and air strike targeting networks allegedly smuggling weapons and fighters from Iran killed 32 suspected militants Wednesday in Baghdad's Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, the military said.

The military also said 12 suspects were detained.

"The individuals detained and the terrorists killed during the raid are believed to be members of a cell of a Special Groups terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq into Iran for terrorist training," the military said.

The statement came after Iraqi police in Sadr City said a bombardment by U.S. helicopters and armored vehicles killed nine civilians, including two women, and wounded six others. The police also said 12 people were detained.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki arrived in Iran on Wednesday for talks expected to focus on bilateral relations and overcoming "terrorism challenges" in his wartorn nation.

It was the Iraqi premier's second visit to Tehran in less than one year.

Iraq, which like Iran is majority Shiite Muslim, has managed a difficult balancing act between Tehran and Washington since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, trying to maintain good relations with its powerful neighbor while not angering Americans.

The U.S. has accused Iranians of providing money and weapons to Shiite militias in Iraq. Tehran denies the charges and argues that the presence of U.S. troops is destabilizing the region.

The two nations have held three rounds of talks on Iraqi security since May, and al-Maliki said he would push for these talks to continue at an ambassador level.

State television said he was received in Tehran by First Vice-President Parviz Davoodi and would hold talks with other Iranian leaders during his visit, expected to last three days.

"We are here today to boost commercial and security relations with neighboring countries against the terrorism challenges in the area," al-Maliki told The Associated Press on the plane to Iran.

The premier, who is a Shiite and is deemed a close ally of Iran's Shiite regime, said he would also discuss and sign a number of cooperation memorandums with Tehran. He did not elaborate.

In an apparent gesture of welcome, Iran's Payam state radio played Arab-style belly dancing music early Wednesday, a rare event in this conservative Islamic country.

In other developments:

  • Lt. Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, the No. 2 commander in Iraq, told CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan that most of the U.S. casualties in the wartorn country are caused by Shiite militias, backed by Iran.

  • The U.S. military tells CBSNews.com that 26 American service members have been killed in action in Iraq in the past week alone, including three soldiers who were killed by a single roadside bomb attack reported Tuesday. Most recently reported were the three Task Force Marne soldiers killed Saturday when a roadside bomb struck their convoy south of Baghdad, according to a brief statement that provided no more details.

  • Iraqi authorities clamped a three-day driving ban on the capital and erected new checkpoints, while thousands of Shiite pilgrims began their annual trek toward a mosque in northern Baghdad to mark the anniversary of the death of one of Shiite Islam's key saints. First-aid tents stocked with coolers of bottled water or offering food, dates, yoghurt and tea lined the streets as authorities scrambled to prevent a catastrophe from marring the ceremonies honoring Imam Moussa ibn Jaafar al-Kadhim, one of 12 principal Shiite saints who died in the year 799.

  • A roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol in the northern city of Kirkuk, killing one officer and wounding six others. Gunmen also targeted the former mayor of the Shiite holy city of Najaf who is now an official at a water treatment center in a drive-by shooting. The official, Tala Hillal, was wounded and his driver was killed in the attack, the latest in a series of assassination attempts against clerics, academics and security officials.

So you did get at least 1 of my points! Here I thought you weren't listening.
There are others that read your blogs and see right through your anti-american propaganda, just as I and ricky boy have.

You're views express justification for attacking americans and american military. Please go outside of your 'texas' home and express your views down the street- if you do infact live in Texas. You truly are a coward.

Your ignorance of MOS codes is another example of your tale twisting propaganda. I will not give you more information about myself to use in your propaganda- your twisting of facts is habitual. My experience matters not, since I don't need to justify unamerican/anti military statements as you do.

Those that have served wouldn't increase the risk for our troops, especially while in harm's way. Your rants and propaganda certainly do this.

Sorry, not going away. I will do anything I can to help my comrades still serving.

So, your point appears to be that for some reason, I decided to post comments on the I'net expressing opinions that I would not express in public.

And, presumably, would not do so because I am fearful of some unspecified consequence.

And, to add credibility to those opinions, invented an entire military history of being a US Army MP. With occasional comments about specific events that occurred during that service.

So, you, outraged by my opinions, suddenly appeared on this website, repeating the same claims as the well known liar and troll, Ricky boy, for no other apparent purpose than to engage in juvenile taunts and personal attacks?

And, tossed out some totally meaningless summary of your "military career" as support for your prior claims of being a veteran?

The MOS codes have changed over the years, but I do not recall any MOS designated "12B40..A%$hole."

I've heard of an 11B - infantry, 95B - MP, but I never heard of a 12B - A$$HOLE. Must have been some very interesting courses in AIT. And, you must have been good at it given your claim of being an NCO A$$HOLE.

Okay, Ricky boy, that's real nice.

Now, go play with your little friends in Faux Newsland, an imaginary place where unrealistic and extraordinary events occur.

Tucker- I thought you said you don't need your rants repeated to you. What's obvious is you are suffering from some form of twisted dementia in your old age.

    You forgot you wrote:

...based on recorded history, that US soldiers are slaughtering Iraqis.

The military is just like any other large organization. Characterizing them as a group as "brave" is a misapplication of the term. There are as many cowards in uniform....

So the point is, I've seen your propoganda and your Jihadist statements. Statements you are free to make online under the internet cloud but not down your street at the neighborhood bar. Your twisited ideology is not normal view of the U.S. citizens although your worldwide audience may view it as such. Please, go down the street and express your views in public. I am sure someone will do what the internet can't-- shut you up. If you were infact in DFW,and not somewhere in the middle east posing-- you would know you couldn't do that.

    BTW - 12 Year Army vet 12B40..A%$hole

Given the fact that our comments are easily accessible on the same page, it's rather pointless to copy and paste them.

And, I prefer remaining on topic than wandering all over the planet discussing unrelated issues, interspersed with non sequiturs and ad hominem attacks. Makes it very difficult to determine someone's point, or, if they are even trying to make a point.

You have yet to identify your branch, duty station, time of service or MOS. Yet you accuse me of being a poser while supporting your claim with absolutely nothing other than the claim they are your "brothers."

That can mean many things. During my time in the service, it meant your were of African descent, but it had nothing to do with the military.

And, you make a statement you attribute to me I never made.

Which makes it hard to determine what your point is or if you even have one, other than whining about my opinions because you don't agree with them.

    Tough ***, GI.

It is courteous etiquette to copy up the qoute in question-- but for you I will make it easy.So read this well.

When you reference your Military background as a basis/background for your rant-- it does become relevant.

Referencing our soldiers as clueless blatant killers and questioning thier bravery is an insult to me and my comrades still serving- you've done this several times on this blog.

You are the tokyo rose for the enemy and should be exposed as such.

Oh..And the moron is you, as I said, I am not Rick.

Zionism and Muslim extremism are the same thing. They are both (ostensibly) fighting over Jerusalem.

Christians have been fighting Muslims for over 1,000 years. Modern day Zionism is roughly equivalent to the Christian Crusades of the 11th century.

You are obviously unfamiliar with Zionism if you are unaware of its past or present violence. Read back through the comments for examples.

    Zionism is "holy war."

Everything that is said about "Muslim extremism" is equally true of Zionism. Fortunately, most Christians and Jews are not Zionists, as most Muslims are likewise not radical extremists.

Really Tucker? Are there Jewish and Chrisitan extremist groups that have declared jihad* on the United States? You should be doing your duty as a citizen and report them to the FBI!-- use those contacts you've derived from those years of law enforcement duty. Perhaps the patriot act can help you tap into some phone conversations-- isn't it cool to be so "nazi'ish"? Sure beats that "kicking down the door approach" you must be used too.

And here I thought Zionist were only jewish folks returning to the homeland- you consider these people extremists? A severe misuse of the word, I was refering the people that blow themselves up in the middle of a crowded bus.. not the ones taking the bus to get home. Whew.. glad we got that straightened out- I was thinking you were really out there.

*oh excuse me-I am not well versed in arabic- I am refering to the Jihad that = "Holy War"

I have never read such disjointed, illogical garbage in my life than what you try to write.

My apologies, but I have no intention of trying to sort out your comments from my comments given your demonstrated inability to clearly separate topics.

It is unnecessary to repeat what I wrote in its entirety. I'm familiar with my own words and they rarely change. So you can omit my words if you intend for me to read your drivel.

Military prisoners, at the time, who were sentenced to over one year of confinement, were sent to Leavenworth. Regardless where they were stationed. I, along with three other people, escorted four prisoners from the stockade at Mannheim, Germany to Leavenworth, KS.

It is irrelevant what you believe.

I haven't been in the military in over 30 years, so references to my military service in the context of my current activites are irrelevant.

Is there some point to your blathering on about "treason"? I cited the US Constitution's definition of treason and now you are blathering on about "levying war." What is your point, if you have one?

The UCMJ is a rather lengthy document and I knew very few people (none) who could quote the entire UCMJ. Further, the UCMJ has been altered many times over the past thirty five years. I have far more compelling things to do with my time than study a document of no relevance in my life.

Yes, Rick, I just make stuff up to impress morons on the I'net, such as you.

Too bad I'm not creative enough to have invented a Rambo type persona, swinging through trees with a knife in my teeth, two machine guns under my arms, rocket launcher strapped to my leg, and a bazooka in my boot.

Which left me with no alternative but to pretend to be an MP.

So, in which branch of the military did you serve? Where and when? What was your MOS?

    There you go again, twisting...
We are born sinners, fundemental part of Calvanism, Not born Evil. Get it right! You're losing credibilty on your religiuos 'facts' -

There are bad apples in every group. Look at YOU!. Don't twist your tale to to say our military has nothing but bad apples. You're stretching it once again.

You remind me of... tokyo rose- oh she was convicted of treason.
BTW.I am both impressed and amused by your ruse. How gullible some are.

You disgruntled supposed ex-MP. tell the truth--you have Ahmadinejad poster don't you?
Transported prisoners in Kansas & Germany (you said on another post)? -- during the munich Olympics? That does explain some of your ranting - dementia has probably set in.

Our government is your enemy, our military is your enemy, christians are your enemy. Bush especially is your enemy. I am beginning to feel sorry for you. Do you need a hug? Us christians are compassionate aren't we? Well, in-between slaughtering the muslims of the world.:)
