(CBS/AP)  The U.S. military tells CBSNews.com that 26 American service members have been killed in action in Iraq in the past week alone, including three soldiers who were killed by a single roadside bomb attack reported Tuesday.

Most recently reported were the three Task Force Marne soldiers killed Saturday when a roadside bomb struck their convoy south of Baghdad, according to a brief statement that provided no more details.

One Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier was killed and another wounded Monday when their vehicle was targeted by an armor-piercing explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, in a western section of the capital, the military said separately.

Lt. Col. Rudy Burwell, a military spokesman based at Camp Victory in Baghdad, told CBSNews.com that a total of six troops were killed in action Monday.

The U.S. military has accused Iran of supplying Shiite extremists with EFPs to step up attacks against American forces. Tehran denies the allegations.

The deaths raised to at least 3,678 members of the U.S. military have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

August has begun with a wave of U.S. troop deaths in Iraq, on the heels of a relatively low death toll in July, which was cited by commanders as an indication that that the build-up of American troops in and around Baghdad was reducing violence.

The military reported Monday that four U.S. soldiers had died from wounds suffered in a combat explosion in Diyala province north of Baghdad earlier that day. Twelve others had minor injuries and returned to duty.

The military statement announcing the deaths gave no other details and said identities of the victims were being withheld until family could be notified.

Earlier Monday the military said one soldier was killed during fighting in eastern Baghdad a day earlier. Two soldiers were wounded in the fighting.

In other developments:

  • The number of U.S. troops in Iraq has temporarily peaked at its highest level ever as new units arrive to replace those packing up and leaving, the Defense Department said Tuesday. The size of the force is nearly 162,000, slightly surpassing the 161,000 troop level for the Iraqi elections in 2005, said the department's spokesman Bryan Whitman.

  • Iraq's autonomous Kurdish government approved a regional oil law on Tuesday, officials said, paving the way for foreign investment in their northern oil and gas fields while U.S.-backed federal legislation remained stalled. The measure gives the regional government the right to administer its oil wealth in the three northern governates - Irbil, Sulaimaniyah and Dahuk - as well as what it called "disputed territories," referring to Kirkuk, one of Iraq's largest crude production hubs.

  • Turkey and Iraq agreed to try to end the presence of a Kurdish rebel group in Iraq, Turkey's prime minister told a news conference Tuesday. "We have reached an agreement to spend all efforts to end the presence of the Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK in Iraq," Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a news conference together with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

  • The Associated Press reports only eight Jews remain in Baghdad – the remnant of a community 2,700 years old. An Anglican clergyman who watches over the tiny group says they're desperate to leave Iraq for Holland, but Israeli, Dutch and Jewish officials say that's not true

  • A report in The Washington Post says investigators don't know what happened to about a third of the guns given to Iraqi security forces — or who has them now. A study by the Government Accountability Office shows U.S. military officials have lost track of about 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols given to Iraqi forces in 2004 and 2005, according to the newspaper. The report says the highest previous estimate of unaccounted-for weapons — given to Iraqi forces as part of their training — was 14,000.

  • Sixty decomposing bodies were found in a mainly Sunni area that had been under the control of al Qaeda in Iraq west of Baqouba, according to a Diyala police official. The U.S. military said it had no information about any discovery. At least 53 other people were killed or found dead elsewhere in Iraq, according to police. Those included the bodies of five soldiers who had been ambushed by gunmen while on their way home for vacation north of Tikrit.

  • Iraqi authorities girded for a major Shiite pilgrimage later this week in Baghdad with plans to tighten security. Sunni insurgents often target such gatherings. And this particular annual march, to commemorate the eighth-century death of a key Shiite saint, was struck by tragedy in 2005, when thousands of Shiite pilgrims, panicked by rumors of a suicide bomber, broke into a stampede on a bridge, killing 1,000.

"Meanwhile Iraq's political crisis worsened Monday as five more ministers announced a boycott of Cabinet meetings %u2014 leaving the embattled prime minister's unity government with no members affiliated with Sunni political factions."

Nine more American warriors and $200 million dollars wasted just yesterday while Iraq fragments further and the neocons claim something is being achieved.

The term "does not equate" comes to mind.

Were the iraqis "free" before we "liberated" them?

    Are they "free" today?

Is freedom being able to vote?

Or being able to send your kids off to school safely?

What will happen is that the Iraqis will determine for themselves who shall govern them as they should.

The majority of Iraqis neither need or want our occupation. If they did, they would not be leaving their homes to become refugees at a rate of 60,000 a month.

That's 2,000 Iraqis a day stating "we're better off being refugees".

    What does that tell you?

The US is not at war with Iraq.

US soldiers are occupying Iraq. They are not engaged in "combat" in Iraq. They are playing policemen.

The media is promoting propaganda when they refer to the "Iraq war." There is no such thing.

These soldiers were murdered during their occupation of Iraq.

    George Bush murdered them.

You Nazi's had better wake the F--K up. These people have done their home work folks and they KNOW southern fascist better than even we did during the 60's. They are fighting a war without even being involved... that's right, they are using the Civil War in Iraq as a front to kill American's and to suck the life out of this nation. They KNOW these fascist who lead us and they KNOW what they will or will not do BEFORE they do it. They USE them like some two bit *** to recruit new people and to gain power in the region. Just think for yourself here... if you were looking on and watching, would you really have any concern if people who are representing Southern Fascist were blown up in your streets? No you wouldn't!! This Administration didn't have a clue how to fight Terrorist because most of them WERE terrorist when they were young. Sieg Heil Y'all.

    "abandon the people of Iraq"?

    You must be kidding.

Over 10% of the Iraqi population fled Iraq. The other 90% wish we would leave.

ExxonMobil and other war profiteers, including those in the ExxonMobil installed Iraqi "government," do not represent the Iraqi people.

"Freedom means nothing left to lose," (Kris Kristofferson, Janis Joplin), so you are correct the US routinely "frees" people. But, it is hard to enjoy that "freedom" since they are dead.

If we abandon Iraq, it will be a disgrace that we will not live down for at least 100 years. Furthermore, it will cost many american lives in the future if we fail to crush our enemies now. History belongs to the conquerors. Thats who all of us living are, the decendants of the conquerors. Our ancestors killed everything in sight to give this land to us. If we fail to kill our enemies, they WILL kill us!!!

The U.S. should redeploy but not to Kuwait, it's too far to respond quickly. The U.S. can kill 2 birds with one stone by redeploying to Kurdistan and get in between the 140,000 troops Turkey has on Iraq's border intimidating the Kurds and preventing Kurdish rebels from attacking inside Turkey all the while staying closer to Iraq to respond quickly if the predicted genocide starts to take place. No Americans have died in Kurdistan to date and General Mixon claims Kurdistan is good duty! It will give U.S. troops a must needed break, keep U.S. Forces near by, give the Iraqi's who supported the U.S. a level of comfort knowing they are not being completely abandoned and finally give the Iraqi's a chance to see if they can handle their own security and test Nouri al-Maliki's claim the U.S. can leave anytime it wants. I like Joe Biden's plan to split Iraq into 3 regions of Kurd, Sunni and Shiite but the U.S. can either implement that plan or just redeploy sooner.

Don't worry, Haifa Street is safe...its all been worth while...General Betrayus can go for a stroll with his flunkies and the Green Zone inbed media...Our new Vatican City-sized embassy compound will have a swimming pool...won't that be jolly? Electricity for Baghdad can come later...clean water (except for the pool) can come later...safe streets, adequate medical care...sanitation? Later, later, later..."We're the Americans and we're here to help"...is about as welcome in Iraq, as FEMA is in Louisiana... "We're here from the government and we're here to help."

What we are doing in Iraq is a disgrace not a liberation. Our nation, the United States is rotting internally both in spirit, ideals and liberties as a result of this lying absurd aggression. If you support this maddness then go over there and stop being a hypocrite willing to spend the lives of other mens' sons and daughters but not your own or that of your family.
Only some 24% NONTHINKING YAHOOS supported this absurd bloodshed and now America has awakened to the mistake and shame of allowing neo-nazis to run our Republic. Iraq is not ours to lose it is for the Iraquiis to figure out on their own and if they choose slavery then so be it but it is not worth one drop of our blood or treasure. Bloody waste.

Defense Secretary Gates said the U.S. underestimated the divisions and mistrust between the Shiite's and Sunni's but the U.S. underestimated more than that! The U.S. underestimated Iran and Syria's involvement and efforts to undermine U.S. efforts in Iraq. At almost no cost to them at all, Iran and Syria can wreak havoc against the U.S. mission in Iraq. Iran and Syria don't have to fly anywhere, sail anywhere and can be completely disruptive on the cheap! Not having a plan in place to deal with Iran and Syria allowing their borders to be used by insurgents was a military blunder and has proven to be a nightmare.

johnpatrick9--Well said, but aside from the benighted 24%, there is a group of evil men and women who serve the interests of Anglo-American capital who want the Iraqi oil production and are quite willing to see millions dead to get it.
Far more Americans than this 24% support the Washington Regime's actions...All of the mainstream candidates have, in one way or another, announced support for war--in Iran, Pakistan, Iraq and equivocate on peace. Hillary is getting support from Rupert Murdoch, the ardent hawk and Israel-firster who owns FOX and now the WSJ. Many Neo-Cons are going over to Giuliani...

I lost count of the Kerry supporters I talked with prior to the election who ignored his pro-war positions--more hawkish than Bush-- and smugly believed that he could move mountains and turn bread into wine...ignoring the men behind him....

If Americans don't vote for peace, they are going to get continued war.

tbweb - scarily it's not only Bush living in a bubble - I always figure he's not going to know much - but it seems that the Pentagon has also not a clue what the goes on in middle east - many countries were warning that this would erupt in a new civil war in Iraq - yet even the Pentagon and DOD seems to have been taken by surprise.

It's all very troubling - the fact that they don't understand the people in middle east or even know their history - the loss of so many weapons, the lack of foresight even now that the insurgency is a severe problem.

Folks remember these lines. This how the right views our troops, their sacrifices, their families' pain and loss. Next time one of these rightwing fanatics mention the military, ask them why THEY are so unpatriotic, why they have no respect for the troops, why they hate america. I spent 2 years having my patriotism questioned when I said we had no reason to invade Iraq. Now we see the true side of the rightwing viewpoints. What they really think about the deaths of our sons, daughters, husbands and wives.

"get over it. Move on. They were killed, that's it... nothing more."
Remember what they really think of our troops.

US8th_Hit -- so that means you are signing up and you're also gearing your kids to sign up to serve in Iraq for the next decade or so? Or are you one of the so-called proud Americans who want war but ya'll just want someone/anyone else to serve in your place??

What is mortifying to this nation is to be led by a complete and utter incompetent with severe delusions of grandeur whom nobody believes anymore - what is mortifying is that we have a presidential administration who are the laughing stock of America AND the world.

What is dangerous is we have fools who push war when they know eff all about the situation in Iraq. We invaded Iraq - not because Al queda was there - cause they weren't. You are confused - the War on Terror is a separate issue to the Invasion and Occupation ofIraq -- and until you become a smarter more informed person you are talking nothing but nonsense, foolish rhetoric and stupid soundbites.

wfbdem - its not like Bush or the legions of Bush Morons who still support him ever cared about the troops - just so long as the cowardly Bushits don't have to fight they don't care who lives or dies for Bush -- if they did they'd be taking care of the large number of vets already returned from Iraq in bits and pieces. If they did they'd have protested Bush's lack of care and concern for the vets.

The Bushits will be the very first to turn their backs on our troops and also the very first and the angriest to denounce the vets as the vets seek care and disability.

Chimneyfish -- hon - we don't live in Iraq - our legislature is not allowed to make governmental decisions for Iraq - and sadly our own president is so secretive that he doesn't let our own legislature know what's going on -- so what the eff are you complaining out?? That Congress took a month off - on - you have a president who takes more vacations and long weekends than any other previous one - if you need to complain about something here - complain about the Head Honcho.

Infi-idiot makes his usual comment about mainstream media which is mostly owned by Bush support Murdock and other huge supporters of the war like NBC's General Electric. I'm sure he'd rather believe the all is peaches and cream reporting about the war from Fox or to simply ignore the facts that our flawed strategy has killed thousands of US soldiers and countless Iraqis. Yes, it's the main stream media's fault that we have an idiot who started a war in the wrong place, wrong time and wrong reasons, all based on calculated lies and half-truths shoved down the public's throat by the same MSM he protests so loudly about.

The war isn't about the war and the flawed strategy it's all about infi-idiot's peception of the war and how it should be covered in the US media (forget the rest of the world they have no media right?)

In addition to the ongoing casualities the strategy in Iraq has exposed the weaknesses in the tactics we employ, the kind of units and hardware we deploy. Look on the bright side infi-idiot, this debacle has given those pentagon planners you love so much the opportunity to develop new strategies and hardware since what we have now is great for invading but nearly useless for an extended occupation as our death toll shows.

I HAVE and I'm here to tell you NO American should be dying for Corporate Interest anywhere but right here. If Corporations what the protection of this nation then let them live and do business here. The question is are those who so publicly and loudly proclaimed the "surge is working" (McCain, Graham, Faux News, et al), based on casualties in July now going to declare the "surge" is a failure?

Or, do they only refer to our casualties when it suits their political agenda?

If the US could not "pacify" Iraq in five years, the US will not "pacify" Iraq in fifty years.

US soldiers presence are the primary reason for the instability. And, the primary reason Iraqis haven't formed a government they will support.

The US isn't eliminating instability in Iraq, it is creating it.

    One more time:

The US did not declare war on Iraq.

There is no such thing as the "Iraq war."

The US is occupying Iraq on behalf of ExxonMobil and other war profiteers. But, US soldiers are not engaged in combat against an enemy, they are playing policemen on behalf of EM and other war profiteers.

The same is true for Afghanistan.

Calling it a war is Bush administration and media propaganda.

It is an occupation, it is not a war.

If Corporations what the protection of this nation then let them live and do business here.

MCVet, I believe the same thing. The countries that have most heavily benefited from the US corporate/political zeal to globalize (China, India, Philippines), have contributed nothing to the "global war on terror". America's new low wage service economy is picking up the full cost in blood and money.

Jews are out-numbered by about 50-to-1 in the US.

So, why are Gentile-Americans like yourself so weak and ineffective at presenting your case to Congress and the Executive, bluedastard?

When did the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq by a government under the whim of a criminal sociopath become someone else's problem? This isn't about a solution, it's about justice. You can never hope to win over the necessary trust of so many people... betrayed, murdered and lied to Iraqis, Americans (soldiers and citizens), world community ... if you don't bring George Bush and co-conspirators to justice. The human mind does not have the capacity to suppress the truth and injustice of leaving someone like this unpunished and removed from the equation, while seeking a solution it can live with. It impacts everything, from the current Iraqi government, world commitment -- which should be treating this like the aftermath of criminal atrocity, not animosity toward's a sociopath's growing disregard for international law -- to a complete loss of faith in American democracy.

This self-righteous, sociopathic war criminal, traitor to the American Constitution and its democracy has not been brought to justice... and it reeks and permeates in our collective conscious, not just here in America, but in Iraq and throughout the world.

"There's a very healthy political debate that is going on in Iraq, and that is good."

That is a FLAT OUT LIE!!!! There is NONE, ZERO, NOTHING debate. First of all the fcking parliment is ON VACATION and secondly the Sunni reps ARE BOYCOTTING PARLIMENT.

God, this makes soooo angry!!!!!! This is ANOTHER BUSH LIE design to make the American people think progress is being made so come Sept he can extend the surge and ask for $147 billion more dollars to continue THIS FIASCO.

And US troops are dying EVERY DAY while this NOTHING DEBATE continues. There has been absolutely NO PROGRESS since the parliment was elected in 2005!!!!

HOW MUCH LONGER IS THIS CHARADE GOING TO CONTINUE!!!!!

It is past time for the American people to pull the plug. Talk to your rep while they are home. Tell them you DO NOT SUPPORT more money for Iraq. Enough of our troops dying FOR NOTHING!!!!

Sorry, I meant "collective conscience". Although "collective conscious" could have been a poetic or political allegory here for a larger separate symptom I guess.

    Well said and we agree.

OBL's crimes pale in comparison to the crimes committed by the Bush administration.

According to the army, last month was a "good" month-only 75 troops killed! This month is starting off as a "bad" month- 26 dead in a week,
When we have our final month in Iraq, how many should we loose to get out "with honor"?

Over the last few weeks there has been a concerted effort on the part of the administration and the Pentagon to get out the "good news" about Iraq. Two right-wingers posing as critics were there for a week and that somehow made them experts on how the "surge" was working. Shortly, the administration begins using it as evidence of how well things are going. Coincidence?

200,000 guns lost. 26 troops killed in a week. Basra falls into chaos. The Iraqi government is on the vergo of collapse. Severe shortages of water and electrity. 8 million citizens in need of aid. THIS is the reality of Iraq. Not some bogus report from two right-wing pundits.

It would be nice to see an article about the 5,600 killed in car crashes this week. Perhaps then people would be equally outraged and do something about it too instead of just using dead soilders for political gain.

The progress is just palpable. This September report is going to show real progress and therefore we will need to continue the surge or it will show disapointing progress in which case we will need to surge more because if we don't it will just be catastrophic.

It's always something with you Fascist. As a Combat Vet I'm always disgusted by the total disregard you have for our Troops. It's one thing for a person to get in their car and meet with a death by accident. It's quite another for a man or woman to loose their lives in defense of this nation. It's just disgusting that slime like You can not figure out the difference. One is important to their family and folks around them. The other is important to the security and defense of this nation. God were does slime like this come from? Sieg Heil Bush!!

Just like during the Vietnam War, anti-America CBS only reports American Soldier casualties.

Get the whole story, get the REAL news:

If we are so into supporting our troops -- WHY DOESN'T THE MEDIA FEEL IT IS NECESSARY TO TELL US THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO DIE AND LET US GRIEVE WITH THEIR FAMILIES????!!!! Why isn't the media in each of these home towns telling us about the short lives of these wonderful people?!

Cable news wastes hours and hours and hours of news time talking about Michael Vick, Paris Hilton and people of that ilk. We felt we knew Natalie Holloway PERSONALLY by the time the media was done with her and her mother. This is a crime, AND WE ARE ALL PARTICIPATING.
