Sodas Get Run For Your Money

Natural Drinks Making Presence Felt; Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton Suggests Some

From fermented root beer to exotic fruits, Hannah Storm speaks with Andrew Knowlton from Bon Appetit magazine about a selection of made-for-adult sodas.

(CBS)  Just a few years ago, almost all the soda in your local supermarket was made by just a few big companies.

Now there are dozens of all-natural drinks on store shelves, mostly made by smaller companies, in smaller batches, swallowing up a growing share of the market.

The new drinks cater to people who want something fizzy, but are concerned with the artificial colors and corn syrup in many sodas.

All-natural sodas or alternative beverages have grown-up, with more and better flavors to pick from. They're considered more sophisticated, non-alcoholic drinks.

On The Early Show Tuesday, Andrew Knowlton, an editor of Bon Appetit magazine (www.epicurious.com/bonappetit), filled in viewers on the ones he thinks are best.

He chose these drinks for the same reasons he picks food he thinks is good.

"It's really the same thing I look for in food: simple, honest, unadulterated flavors that put ingredients first," Knowlton told CBS News. "Lots of sodas hide behind sugar (corn fructose), and the flavors (lemon, lime, orange, grape) they purport to contain are nothing more than artificial chemicals.

"Sodas, beverages should be refreshing and not overwhelm the palate. I think the boom in the artisanal soda movement echoes the public's growing interest in knowing where, how their foods are sourced: real fruit flavors, not artificial flavorings. Cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.

"And, you can't deny the appeal of the retro-packaging and 'mom-and-pop' story line of many of the sodas."

CLASSICS

These are the ones with the flavors you might most recognize, since they're trying to be alternatives to the more commercial versions of these drinks. You may not love the taste of these at first, because they aren't the flavors you think of when you have your favorite cola or ginger ale. These are decidedly different.

    Boylans
    Fentimans
    Steaz

  • Ginger Ale

    "ODD BALLS"

Organic, Green Tea, Diet, Gourmet: These are the more unusual flavors. Here, you'll find even energy drinks with more sophisticated flavors than your traditional ones, and more sophisticated use of ingredients, such as the Jones Blue Bubble Gum flavored drink.

My teen has become allergic to yellow dye 5 and 6, both of which are in orange soda, lemonades, mac & cheese, reeses pieces, m&m's and so much more. If you research these dyes on the web, you'll find that Dr.'s have asked that they be removed from the accepted list (as the UK and Denmark have) because they cause hyperactivity, asthma, allergic reactions and so much more, especially in small children. Very dangerous and no one is aware of the danger. There are organic drinks, mac & cheese, etc. that use natural colors, thank goodness for my son.

Then, DZ it is up to the FDA to protect me from shampoo. AND you forgot Toothpaste !

The FDA are quick enough to ban a product at the behest of Big Pharma and to agree with their bogus safety reports. If they spent less time kneeling down to Corporate America they just may find the time to look after the people.

They have also had quite enough evidence submitted on Aspartame and have ignored it in favour of the manufacturer.

    Take a grammar class.
The FDA is understaffed for the task charged to them.
Soda companies have always stated ingredients; it is the consumer's perogative to be educated about what those actually are.
Have you checked your shampoo? There's a good chance your shampoo contains a cancer-causing agent and you just don't know it because you are unaware of what PEG7/propylene glycol is.

What a sensible report, anyone denigrating evil GM modified Corn Syrup or Aspartame gets my vote, as will the companies who omit these poisons from their products. The public are becoming aware that we have been poisoned and taken for a ride by many of the National Corporate food and beverage manufacturers and yet the FDA sits on their hands doing nothing to serve the taxpayer, whilst defiantly protecting Big Pharma and the Chemical companies. Shame on you crooked cretins.
