Violence in Pakistan is spreading, with fresh attacks leaving dozens dead.

(CBS)  The United States will do everything it can to capture high-value targets in Pakistan, but it will not act independently of Pakistan's government, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday on Face The Nation.

Pakistan used to be a main backer of the Taliban, but threw its support behind Washington following the Sept. 11 attacks. Pakistan has since deployed about 90,000 soldiers in its tribal regions to fight remnants of the Taliban and al Qaeda, who are believed to be hiding there.

But a recent surge in violence and a resurgence of radical Islamic groups has threatened the government of Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, and the reconstruction of neighboring Afghanistan.

The surge in violence followed tribal leaders' withdrawal from a 2006 peace deal with the government, and amid widespread anger at an army raid of Islamabad's radical Red Mosque last month that left at least 102 people dead.

"We have a cooperative arrangement with Pakistan; Pakistan is an ally in the war on terror," Rice said. "The idea that somehow we have a greater interest in the capture and kill of high-value targets who are threatening Pakistan itself, as was shown by the extremist who brought about all that trouble at the Red Mosque, who are bringing about trouble in the frontier areas, I think is just not right."

Earlier in the week, Sen. Barack Obama, one of the Democrats campaigning for the White House, said that, if elected, he might order unilateral military strikes in Pakistan against al Qaeda. Rice said she did not want to respond to Obama's remarks but wanted to say what the U.S. policy was.

"Yes, Musharraf has constraints, but we believe that the future with Pakistan is to be very active in that region," Rice said. "Of course we are going to go after targets and after extremists, but so are the Pakistanis because they have a lot at risk, too."

But Rice did say that Pakistan needed to do more to secure the tribal areas along its border with Afghanistan.

"I think there's no doubt that things have changed in terms of even Pakistani perception of what needs to be done in the frontier areas, and that's why the Pakistani army has been much more active there," Rice said.

Rice, who is meeting Sunday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at Camp David, said military force alone could not bring stability to either country.

"We continue to believe that it's important to have reconstruction assistance in that region to try to deal with hearts and minds of the people who right now may be too close to, or may be turning a blind eye even to terrorism," she said.

Dargay,

I admit that I don't know how strong AQ elements can become as a domestic force in Pakastan but I also know that Pakastan has not been able to root them out. I'm not blaming Pakastan for that, I'm just stating fact.

With all due respect, my country hasn't threatened yours, we've threatened those bozos. We've indicated that we would not act upon intelligence without allowing Pakastan to resolve the problem.

You say that we don't know how to defeat terrorism. We did remove the Taliban from power. How would you propose to fight terrorism?

I've indicated to you twice previously that a joint effort to root AQ out of your country would benefit us all and rather than respond to that suggestion you call my country stupid and say that we don't appreciate what Pakastan has done. You claim that our bloodlust is inexhaustible.

We didn't ask to be attacked. If our leadership knows where AQ is should we do nothing until we are attacked again? What then? We have no choice but to root AQ and the Taliban outand would prefer to do it together.

Think for a moment how angry the mere mention of violence on your soil makes you. How do you think we feel about continually being threatened by these people who have attacked us over and over again. If you want us to appreciate you then appreciate us.

We don't like being called warmongers for trying to protect our children.

Your stupid country doesnt know how to fight terrorism and we dont want Americans to bring their "brute force" approach to Pakistan.

The idea that Alqaida will gain "control" over Pakistan is laughable. Those bozos cant even show their faces in public, you talk about control.

The US can share intelligence, provide funding and equipment. If you cant do that, then SHUT UP. We dont want your threats, allegations and blame-shifting.

Dargay,

Explain to me how you think I've threatened Pakastan.

I'm asking for the U.S., Pakastan, & Afghanistan to operate cooperatively in a joint alliance against Al Quaeda.

We would like to help Pakastan gain control over the northern regions before l Quaeda gains any more power and becomes a greater threat to the rest of Pakastan.

I appreciate the efforts that Pakastan has made but I do think more can and must be done by Pakastan and the U.S.

What I'm saying and what Obama is saying may be perceived as a threat but it's actually an attempt to get more serious about the problem before we are forced to take an action that we don't want to take.

I think if our 2 countries work together that we can deal with the pproblem in a manner that will be to the long-term benefit of both nations and will avoid what neither of us wants to happen.

Dargay,

The other day you said that if Pakastan was presented with actionable intelligence they would act upon it. If that's so than Obama wouldn't need to bomb anyone.

The media reported a few days before Obama spoke that the White House was debating taking action, do you suppose they would be having such a debate if there were no actioanble intelligence.

I would prefer that Pakstan act like an allie and that the U.S. and Pakastan conduct joint operations in the areas which Pakastan can't control and which the Taliban & AQ are using to attack across the border into Afghanistan. That would make all this discussion moot.

What do you suppose will ultimately happen to Pakstan if AQ becomes stronger and they lose control of their country to a resurgent AQ which already has effective control in these areas?

Rice is an idiot to take action off the table if Pakastan doesn't act.

Well, she's obviously responding to Obama.

But fact of the matter is, republicans are afraid of pakistan. They treat it like fine china. Which is maybe Obama's point.

Iraq is a presidentially personal, unrelated war. That, at least according to most people, had nothing to do with terrorism. And yet nearly 200,000 of our troops are commited there! In a nationbuilding effort!

But why are republicans afraid of pakistan? Because they're a nuclear power? Makes obvious that nuclear arms make the difference between who Rice talks to, and who Rice doesn't.

ramos937,

We have 2 war fronts now. In Iraq we are fighting mostly Iraqi nationals who want us out of their country and a relatively small but significant percentage of Al Quaeda grunts sent there and directed by the leadership in Afghanistan/Pakastan which is really one front.

When we went into Afghanistan, virtually all Americans supported the effort because we were going after the real enemy, the group who attacked us and their state sponser. When we went into Iraq we had much less support because Al Quaeda and the Taliban weren't initially there. It was the wrong battlefield.

Now the group who attacked us and their state sponser are reconfiguring themselves and attacking our troops in sovereign ally Afghanistan from an area of Pakastan not under the control of their government.

If the northern provinces of Pakastan were truly part of soverign Pakastan then Pakastan could demonstrate their soveriegnty by exercising control over them. That's not been the case.

Hillary and the Republican candidates have all slammed Obama for saying that if we knew where AQ was he would give Pakastan the chance to act and only act if they didn't. They all claim they would do the same thing but don't want to talk about it.

Condi has taken it further. She won't go after AQ even if the Pakastanis don't. Is it any wonder that he still roams free to plan the next attack?

I agree also - but
it shows that this whole anti-terrorism thing is a joke. Just like catching the perpertrators of 9-11 *bin laden*. Our money, jobs and support are pouring into this country and yet they still show support/protection for terrorist.
Why is our government providing more for this countries people than they do their own? I was appalled when our jobs went there and the hypocrasy of sentiment towards our own citizens *abortion, terrorism, unemployment, womens rights etc... why were we rewarding a country that was found culpable by the 9-11 commission?
They riot AGAINST america even today!
I just am fed up at the sale of america to the highest profit areas - supported by the tax dollars I work for.

HAMAS MICKEY MOUSE SAYS
Islamic rule will benefit Christians and Jews
by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook - May 14, 2007
The force behind Hamas TV%u2019s controversial Mickey Mouse clone said today that his children%u2019s television program will continue to promote worldwide Islamic supremacy, for everyone's benefit, including Christians and Jews.

In a long interview on Hamas TV, Hazim Al-Sha%u2019arawi, Deputy Director of Al-Aqsa TV and one of the creators of the Hamas children%u2019s TV show Tomorrow%u2019s Pioneers, said that using the program to promote Islamic rule over other religions is actually promoting %u201Cjustice, goodness and world love.%u201D

Al-Aqsa TV and the Palestinian Authority have been under fire since PMW reported last week that Tomorrow%u2019s Pioneers was using a character named Farfur, a knockoff of Disney%u2019s Mickey Mouse character, to convey messages about Islamic supremacy as well as hatred of Jews, Israel and the U.S. Despite public statements by PA Minister of Information Mustafa Barghouti that the show would be taken off the air until it could be reviewed and revised, a new episode of the program %u2013 featuring Al-Sha%u2019arawi as one of the hosts %u2013 ran Friday.

NONE OF US IS FREE UNLESS ALL ARE FREE!!!

WHY IS IT NOT ONE MUSLIM COUNTRY GRANTS EQUAL RIGHTS TO NON MUSLIMS???

FASCIST NAZI TERRORISLAM SAYS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATES ISLAM LAW...

Universal Declaration of Human Rights
http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

For example, in 1981, the Iranian representative to the United Nations, Said Rajaie-Khorassani, articulated the position of his country regarding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by saying that the UDHR was "a secular understanding of the Judeo-Christian tradition", which could not be implemented by Muslims without trespassing the Islamic law.

http://www.un.org/terrorism/
http://www.un.org/terrorism/strategy-counter-terrorism.html
http://www.un.org/

But the accepted assumption in India is that most of India's Muslims were converted to Islam through the sword. Meaning the Indians were given an option between death or adopting Islam. The third option was getting examined in Islam religion along with heavy taxes- Jeziya (poll tax) and Kharaj (property tax).

IT IS TIME TO DEFEAT FASCIST NAZI TERRORISLAM ONCE AND FOR ALL%u2026

In 1786, Thomas Jefferson, then U.S. ambassador to France, and John Adams, then American Ambassador to Britain, met in London with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the Dey%u2019s ambassador to Britain, in an attempt to negotiate a peace treaty based on Congress%u2019 vote of funding. To Congress, these two future presidents later reported the reasons for the Muslims%u2019 hostility towards America, a nation with which they had no previous contacts.

%u2026that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.

Sound familiar?

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison defeated the fascist nazi muslims 200 years ago
And again 100 years ago with Theodore Roosevelt
Tunisia in 1881 by France and Libya in 1911 by Italy. By then most of the Islamic world was under Christian domination. With the Ottoman Empire defeated in WW1, secularist Turkish rebels in 1923 overthrew the last Islamic Caliphate,

Switching Sides: Inside The Enemy Camp

But then in 2000, well before his arrest, something happened which would make Abas question everything he believed in: a fatwa, a religious edict, was issued by Osama bin Laden.

"It should be understood that killing Americans and Jews anywhere found are the highest act of worship and the highest form of good deeds in the eyes of Allah," Simon quotes bin Laden.

Abas and his fellow commanders were ordered to read the fatwa to their men and make sure they carried it out. The others obeyed, but Abas refused. It was his moment of truth. He firmly believed that jihad was to be fought only on the battlefield in defense of Islam; he had always been taught that the killing of civilians had nothing to do with holy war and that it was forbidden.

The fatwa justified killing non-Muslim civilians everywhere.
