(AP)  The outspoken new editor of the Oakland Post was shot to death Thursday near a downtown courthouse in what police believe was a deliberate hit.

Chauncey Bailey, who had been a reporter for The Oakland Tribune before moving to the Post in June, was killed around 7:30 a.m., Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said. He said witnesses told police that a single gunman had shot Bailey and then fled.

Police had no motive for the killing but said it did not appear to be random. Holmgren said investigators would look into any possible connections with Bailey's work.

“I've spoken with him several times,” Holmgren said. “I know him as being a somewhat outspoken type individual, assertive in his journalistic approach when trying to get at matters at hand.”

Bailey grew up in Oakland and worked with several area media outlets, including KDIA radio and Soul Beat TV, a local cable channel. He wrote for the Tribune for more than 10 years before being named editor of the Post, a weekly community newspaper.

Oakland Tribune managing editor Martin G. Reynolds said Bailey was “a friend, a valued colleague and a loving father” whose coverage of Oakland's black community was “a tremendous asset.”

At the Oakland Post, Gwendolyn Carter, the paper's advertising manager, said the staff of about 10 was shocked by Bailey's death.

“He was a good man,” Carter said. “He always took care of me. He would say I was his little sister and he was my big brother.”

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland offered up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the gunman's arrest.

And now for some reality. Who doesn't think that this will stop reporting of radical Muslim activity? Cartoon in Denmark, riots, Obama's stupid comment, riots, reporter reporting, shot dead, movie maker shot dead. Universities are paying for Muslim footbath areas. Why? You can make fun of Jesus and God all day long, but do not say anything negative about radical muslims. Time will tell, but try to get someone on camera berating radical Muslims. I did not say all Muslims, I said radical. They will be the ones to exact the pound of flesh.

My goodness, that sounds like a threat. Strange that CBS doesnt' remove your comments from the site.

Islam may not prevail much longer if it attacks us. It's hard to pray to a big area of radioactive glass.

That is why my GOD is stronger than your god. My GOD does not require me to kill those that reject him, HE will take care of that himself when the prophesies are fulfilled. My GOD and his SON simply ask me to love them enough to do their will which is care for thse less fortunate than ourselves. HE is strong enough to take care of himself.

What has happened in America? This country was founded on the belief that we should be able to speak our minds without fear. Where is my time machine?

"...this blog will probably be limited to Oakland residents and/or the people who seem to make it a profession to publicly grieve on the blogs for those who die and happen to be mentioned in the media. Said people will of course implore us to make the blog one long eulogy and to refrain from any reference to anything except long praises and well wishes for a family few of us know or have any personal connection with. "

CASES IN POINT:

"My God a decent man was shot dead on the street and all you can do is rant about the Repubs. You people need to dial 1-800-get-help. Do it today! " Posted by gunshack1 at 08:35 AM : Aug 03, 2007

"and all you posters ******** about politics have missed the point AGAIN. stick to the stories at hand - forget about democrats, republicans, and race. JUST READ THE D@MN ARTICLE AND COMMENT ON ITS CONTENTS. have a nice day as bon jovi says. " Posted by jetlizhan at 08:52 AM : Aug 03, 2007

Now. Get a clue you two. Blogs are for blogging in any way the blogger wants about the subject, so long as they do not denigrate (and often, even if they do) if you don't like it, you don't have to read it. And if you feel msgs are inappropriate to the subject, try to remember that you really are not the thought or blog police and just make sure your own remarks are up to your personal stds. Leave everyone else's to them. Gun Control, Republicans, eulogies, tears, rants, humour. whatever---blog on.

Like a cancer. Those who offend the prophet Muhammed(PBUH) shall be excised form the body of humanity.

Everyone cries "freedom of speech". What about a Muslim right to practice his fredom of religion?

You cannot offend Islam , Allah, or his prophet Muhammed(PBUH)

Democracy - hypocracy.

Islam will prevail. I invite you to attend our mosque and convert. It is the only way you will be safe.

MOS - Sounds familiar??

Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said police don't have a motive for the killing, but it did not appear to be random.

He also said it's not clear whether the attack had anything to do with Bailey's journalism work but investigators would be looking at that angle.

Early Friday police surrounded an Oakland eatery, Your Black Muslim Bakery, which Bailey reportedly had been investigating before he was killed.

is it more easy to dare kids off drugs or more easy to dare soldiers off kids?

the more soldiers are dared off kids, the more they leap on them?

the more they leap on them, the more kids suffer and fry?

the more they suffer and fry, the more the soldiers worlds slips away in their hands?

theirs all these polite folk in congress and at the networks touting how good is technology handled responsibly

as the world melts of acid rain and geography vanishes? possibly on purpose? with promises of huvan engineered geographys and other cures that ever seem so elusive, so undiscussed?

where went all the naked lazy ignorant profane savage kids what weren't allowed at congress and the networks???

He was a black man. For those who wonder. I have seen pictures of him. He may have been outspoken but where does it say that one should be shut up by a bullet? A lot of people are outspoken.

They have lost it I was tring to say that this act was one that was premeditated and not for others to take the law into there own hands but leave it to the wing nut crowd to try to change the way words are meant.

Anybody that is outspoken is going to have people that do not like him or her. That is sad to say that you almost have to remain quiet not to get someone mad enough to kill you.
But that is a fact in today's society that is the way it is.
I was so sorry to hear that reporter lost his life but that was not random they just waited to find him when he was alone.
MAY GOD BLESS HIS ENTIRE FAMILY DURING THIS TRYING TIME!!!

And Democrats want to bring to the rest of America what they brought to the deep blue cities.

The Democrats and their contaminated followers "refuse" to take responsiblity for the proverty and dispair that continues year after year and decade after decade in deep blue cities that have had "one party rule" (Democrats).

And their "ENABLERS" are the corrupt liberal political/news organizations.

Democrats take responsiblity for your "rule" and "lift up" the poor people in your deep blue cities.

Is this what you call "Social Justice" ??

Really sad .........and really a FACT

I didn't know the victim was black, the article didn't say he was black, and I still don't know that he is black, except on your say so.

Posted by MissUT2 at 12:52 AM : Aug 03, 2007

I think he was saying that because of this paragraph:
Oakland Tribune managing editor Martin G. Reynolds said Bailey was %u201Ca friend, a valued colleague and a loving father%u201D whose coverage of Oakland's black community was %u201Ca tremendous asset.%u201D

Although, that is assuming still, because the story doesn't note his race. But maybe he's heard of the guy before, see a picture or whatever, and knows he is. Nonetheless, it sounds like he was murdered for being controversial, not black.

Every post here turns into a Bush Bash. It just really proves how librally biased both CBS and its viewers really are!!!! I guess it sells though, its all about the bottom line! If a person wants the news rather than to be entertained, maybe they should watch Foxnews!

antoniof123:

In your diatribe, you have committed an act of unAmerican treason by encouraging US citizens to violate provisions of that wonderful document, the US Constitution.

If you don't like it here in our great country, why don't you go back to where your ancestors came from?

perception5,

what does your diatribe have to do with this story?

Unfortunately, some nut decided whatever disagreement he had with the newspaper editor, Chauncey Bailey, could only be solved by murder! They need to catch this guy, and prosecute him for 1st degree murder. I don't care if Me Bailey was white or black, democrat or republican, race or politics have nothing to do with it.
