Mentally Disturbed NYC Woman Suspected Of Killing Allegedly Abusive Stepfather

(CBS/AP)  Police were investigating whether a mentally disturbed woman lured her Liberian stepfather to her home and then gagged, handcuffed and castrated him to avenge a history of sexual abuse.

Investigators believe the suspect, Brigitte Harris, "did it," a law enforcement official said on Monday. "We are trying to determine why."

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Harris had not been arrested or charged, said police were checking reports that Eric Goodridge, 55, may have abused Harris as a child. Detectives were hoping to question the 26-year-old suspect at a hospital mental ward where she was admitted after the slaying, the law enforcement official said.

Police also were seeking a search warrant to comb the suspect's computer files for clues about a motive. On her MySpace.com home page, she referred to herself as The Original Dark Angel and listed her mood as "depressed."

Her attorney, Arthur Aidala, after viewing the MySpace page, said, "You could tell that she's someone who's calling out for help."

He said his client's stepfather was "a monster."

"And living with a monster from the age of 3 is something that you just don't recover from without professional help," he said.

Harris left chilling notes in her Rockaways apartment accusing Goodridge of abuse and justifying her crime, the New York Daily News reports.

"He wrecked my life," read one note found near her stepfather's body Saturday, according to the Daily News. "At first, I blamed myself. Now I know it's not my fault," another said.

Police said Harris sent e-mails to Goodridge to lure him to her apartment, the Daily News reports. Then she handcuffed him to a chair, gagged him with duct tape and throttled him until he died, authorities said.

He was already dead when she cut off his penis, officials said, noting there would have been much more blood if he had been alive when it was severed.

When officers were summoned there at about 1 p.m. Saturday, they discovered his mutilated body; Harris was missing.

The victim had been bound with duct tape, handcuffed and strangled before having his penis sliced off, police said. The medical examiner determined he died from "homicidal violence," including gagging and neck compression.

Police immediately began searching for Harris and learned she had checked into a hospital for psychological treatment.

Goodridge lived in Staten Island when he was married to Harris' mother. He later married another woman, who died five years ago, according to the Daily News. That woman's mother defended Goodridge as a decent dad to his other children, who are now orphaned.

She acknowledged to the Daily News that she had heard rumors that Goodridge had abused Harris, but said she didn't think they was true.

"I would die if I could believe that," his former mother-in-law told the Daily News. "He wouldn't pay child support, but I wouldn't believe that."

But a former brother-in-law told the Daily News he had also heard of the sex abuse claims long before Goodridge's shocking death.

"It stands to reason if someone pulls a Lorena Bobbitt, there's a good reason," he told the Daily News.

I was abused as a child due to foster parents and Yes I was pissed growing up that they would beat me over blindness,violated my person. Foster parents. I was told to trust them. All the while the hell and they did not care. I had problems cos of it. Home to home. The pain never goes away. Was she right to do this after all those years well only she can answer that. Not us, I know that pain. With me that trust was broken and I was robbed of my person but he dragged up in his wife's things. He knew if he talked I know. So using my legal blindess against me the outfit was his ticket of abuse. I hated it and him.. I told that social worker get me the hell of there or else..I felt safer at school tho learnt very little. The staff knew there was problems. I changed my name hoping the pain would end..Nope did not work. It is still there. I am older now.. 52.

What this young lady did maybe wrong - but for someone to do this she must have been abused. No one snaps to this point (at least I don't believe so) unless there was serious serious issues in her life... unfortunately other children are fatherless but perhaps if he was this horrible of a person - better for them. The article says that others have "heard" of abuse - then why didn't they help her... if you hear of something so horrible then do something about it.. the girl wouldn't be institutionalized right now and perhaps could have lived a decent life. A lot of foster parents aren't angels are in it for the money - and if heresay is out there than they need to heed the warnings and take actions. Death was too easy for him

MichelleM99 I to am 52 and I to suffered at the hands of counselors in a place called Methodist Youthville. This was a place for children that came from troubled homes. More than once I witnessed a young girl getting molested by a counselor and I kept my mouth shut for fear of my life.
Not only was I raped at the age of 13 by a young black boy there,I was later raped by a counselor.
The drugs and beer an sexual escapes that went on at that place was not a place to raise children. I was abused and almost drowned by my adopted mother through trying to drown me in a bathtub and more than once suffered abuse from her till I was ten,then taken away by the state and she never served any time,but was ordered to pay for my up keep for the next 6 years in a convent school and then Youthville.

My parents married ,too young. Adored Dad. I was not a full term baby. So the marriage broke up. I was 5. Born legally blind and phy handicapped. Due to C/P did not walk until 2 or so. Then she married again. That man told Mum not his she goes. So foster home after foster home. Started sp ed at 10. Was only blind/multi and yes a girl in that school system. Teacher taught the sighted not blind so just sat there. still in sp ed at high school,way behind my peers. Scared to death. Grad at 19, same yr Nixon resigned, Then 7 yrs at blind centre. Then moved in with my friend of 24 yr. I have closer at they who abused me are dead. In my last post staff meant teachers and school personalle.
