Actress Killer Stabbed In Prison

(AP)  An inmate convicted of killing actress Rebecca Schaeffer in 1989 was stabbed repeatedly by another inmate, state prison officials said.

Robert John Bardo, 37, suffered 11 stab and puncture wounds Friday at Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County, authorities said.

"We have a number of high-notoriety cases, so we cannot jump to the conclusion as to whether his notoriety was a factor in the attack," said prison Sgt. Chris Weathersbee.

Bardo was airlifted in stable condition to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment before being returned to the prison, officials said.

State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said the stabbing occurred in the yard while inmates were on their way to breakfast about 6:20 a.m.

Two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene.

The suspect attack was identified as a 49-year-old prisoner serving an 82-years-to-life sentence for second-degree murder.

Bardo, serving a life sentence, was housed in a maximum-security unit for inmates with sensitive needs, including former gang members, notorious prisoners and those convicted of sex crimes.

The slaying of Schaeffer, who was stalked for years before being shot in Los Angeles, helped prompt anti-stalking laws.

She was a former teenage model who co-starred in the 1980s sitcom "My Sister Sam."

According to trial testimony, Bardo, then 19, was obsessed with Schaeffer, and sent her letters and tried to visit her.

He obtained her address through a private detective, who got it from the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

Bardo shot the actress when she answered her door July 18, 1989. He was sentenced in 1991 to life without the possibility of parole.

It always amazed me, how the conservative, compassionate right wing christians come out of the woodwork, on issues such as this, but then they cry at unborn fetuses being aborted/murdered, and in some gusto, cheer with blood lust for a inmate/prisoners death, makes one fully understand why on judgment day they are viewed by Jesus as the blind biblical goats, whom ignored the poor, hungry, naked those sick and in prison, but then in total ignorance they ask when did I see you lord in these conditions, and he tells them when you saw the least of these you saw me, and I know you not, of course the atheists will see all this as mumbo jumbo, and the biblical goats will hollar bleeding heart liberal, how ironic the pharisee's did the same when accusing Jesus of ministering too the sinners, harlots, lepers, poor, but if he were here today, he would be on our southern border giving water, food too the poor hispanics fleeing poverty, and the right wing hypocrites would demand this bleeding heart liberal be arrested for aiding and abetting a felon..., it makes one wonder if god will punish us as a nation for going so far off course, that we let the hypocrites run this great nation, and ruin it..

Rebecca Schaeffer was just in her early 20's when she was killed. I wonder if it happened today how much media it would get, probably a lot less then Michael Vick and the dogs. Perhaps a group ought to form to put some real teeth in legislation for those convicted of murder. At the time it was senseless and still is, she had a potentially great career ahead of her.

Isn't that just great? Anybody's uncle Joe can get your address and number, but if someone is dangerously mentally ill, like this Bardo character, their right to privacy is protected to the Nth degree, such that he, and others like him are free to do what they please (stalk, etc), until someone is killed. Then, everybody goes, "I wonder how that happened?"

I'm sorry, but he should have died. Guards should have turned and walked away.
