Jesenia Vega, 27, of Carle Place, was arrested Saturday night on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. In a court appearance Monday, District Court Judge John Iliou set bail at $100,000 or $200,000 bond.
Vega has pleaded not guilty. Outside court, her attorney, Guy Allen, denied she had been drunk.
He said Vega was very upset and "she is extremely sympathetic to the family of this young man. This is a very emotional time for her."
Suffolk County police said Louis Wiederer, 26, of Westbury was holding onto an open window on the driver's side of Vega's car around 9 p.m. Saturday when Vega drove off and dragged him to his death. The accident happened in Centereach, where the couple had attended a block party earlier that day.
Allen had asked for a lower bail of $5,000, telling the judge his client would attend all future court appearances.
Newsday reported that, even as her boyfriend was lying dead underneath her car, Vega told a responding police officer that she was "trying to drive away from him because he had just pushed and punched me," according to court documents.
As the officer continued to interview her, the scent of alcohol on her breath and bloodshot eyes hinted at her intoxication, and she admitted to drinking Patron, Heineken and Corona beer, Newsday reported.
Vega's attorney said some of the case's facts were in dispute and that while police had taken a blood-alcohol sample, the results weren't yet available to prove her level of intoxication, Newsday reported. He said she had no prior convictions, and works as a payroll clerk.
Records show, however, that she pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment and disorderly conduct in 1997, Newsday reported. Wiederer also pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in 1998, Newsday reported.

- she was going to marry this guy and yet she has no problem passing the blame onto him while sitting in the car over his dead body?
She doesn't indicate abuse by him other than this incident.
She willingly chose to surrender her sobriety and get behind the wheel and drive, ignoring her FIANCE's pleas to stop.
I'd hit her too if she was dragging me to my death. Maybe he let himself go under to get out of marrying her. - Reply to this comment
- I know, I'm playing devil's advocate here BUT...does she show any signs of his having hit her? Does she have ANY bruising or marks? Just maybe she's telling the truth and even if she was drunk? He may have assaulted her!

- For all the idiots out there this is great lesson on why not to try and use you body to stop a much larger more powerful object.
Second lesson is not to put yourself in a position where you will go underneath a heavy object.
Also, a great lesson in why the weak minded of the species die off in a faster rate...
I don't see this as an alleged crime other than DUI - Reply to this comment

Cool site.
The girl probably had a personality change from drinking and it was not until she ran him over and killed him that she relized her actions.
She was "trying to drive away from him because he had just pushed and punched me," according to court documents.
Would she lie to explain why she drove over him?

what the ?uck is wrong with the law?? what a joke.
They have to do it that way. They book the suspect on some charge that could get thrown out of court and no one cares. When they have all the facts, they charge the suspect with the crime they can prove in court.
If they start out charging the suspect with the highest crime they think they might be able to prove they risk that charge getting thrown out of court and not being able to charge the suspect with a lesser crime.
The mistemenor charge is just to hold on to her until they figure out if they want to go for manslaughter, 2nd degree murder, 1st degree murder, or vehicular homicide. - Reply to this comment

wor-KED as a payroll clerk they mean.
Hopefully they will throw the book at her, this was entirely her own fault.

She does have fairly good taste in her drinking habit.
In the future she may want to stick to one brand of beer. - Reply to this comment
