(CBS)  A new CBS News/New York Times poll out Monday shows that most Americans want to see U.S. troops start coming home from Iraq.

After last week's all-night Senate debate that ended without a floor vote, Americans also disapprove of how both parties in Congress are handling the war.

Among those surveyed, Congressional Democrats receive 30 percent approval on how they're handing Iraq after having failed in their recent attempt to force the start of a troop withdrawal. The Republicans, who mustered enough votes to scuttle the Democrats' plans, fare even worse, getting only a 22 percent approval rating.

Only 25 percent of Americans approve of the way President Bush is handling the war. The public is divided on one of the administration's main assertions — that Iraq is part of the broader war on terror. More think Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda are not behind the current violence in Iraq than think they are.

Overall, only 26 percent of those polled approve of the job the Congress is doing as a whole, down slightly from last week.

Americans continue to want the war funded — with a timetable for troop withdrawal attached to the funding. A majority (63 percent) say this should be Congress' approach. One in four say funding should be continued without any timetable for withdrawal, but few think all war funding should be cut off, no matter what.

Just over half of Americans continue to see no impact from the so-called "surge" of additional U.S. troops in Iraq. One in five thinks it has made the situation worse, and about the same number say that it has made it better.

However, Americans are slightly more positive about the current situation in Iraq than they were last week, although they continue to paint a bleak picture of progress. Two thirds think it is going badly, while 32 percent think it is going well. Last week, 74 percent said it was going badly.

As a general matter of strategy for reducing the threat of terrorism, 54 percent now think the U.S. would be safer in the long run by staying out of other countries' affairs in the Middle East, while 38 percent say the U.S. should confront groups and states that support terrorists. This is a change from last fall, when Americans were more closely divided on this question.

But Republicans and Democrats have very different views on the issue of how best to combat terrorism. 67 percent of Republicans say the U.S. should confront groups and states that support terrorists, while 72 percent of Democrats (and 55 percent of Independents) say the U.S. would be safer if we stayed out of other countries' affairs.

News about U.S. intelligence reports indicating al Qaeda is getting stronger and the failed terrorist plot in London last month do not seem to have elevated Americans' concerns about a terrorist attack in the United States. Just 16 percent think an attack in the United States is very likely in the next few months. 41 percent say such an attack is somewhat likely, and another 38 percent say such an attack is not likely.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 889 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone July 20-22, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

Actually bushoccio was sitting there thinking how well 911 was coming off as planned. How this is exactly what he and his corporate masters needed to invade the middle east. How this would let his crime syndicate implement the New American Century plans.

This whole scenario will soon be repeated as soon as the neocon conspirators can arrange another attack and then seize complete power in America.

You are absolutely unfair to him. He could concentrate on one thing for much longer than 2
minutes: "my pet goat" on 9/11.

Ha! Ha!! Good one!

And then he sat and stared for what? About "SEVEN" minutes? I wonder what he was thinking all that time?

"...hmmmmm. ...good thing I planned that war against Iraq. ...now I have an excuse to execute the plan..."

Would you want to fly fighter jets if you only scored in the 25th percentile? Hell NO! That's more dangerous than serving in combat. LOL!!! Posted by down-ndirty at 11:16 AM : Jul 25, 2007

Let's see, janem, approximately half the voters voted for Bush and his rethuglicans in 2004 and now they are only getting 22% approval rating?

If I did the math correctly that means that approximately 80% (or more) of the people who voted republican are now saying they are doing a lousy job?

What does that tell you, janem? Time for a voter revolution? Time for a viable third party candidate?

So, your Congress is in the tank and as per usual, it's not thier fault, it's the fault of those nasty Republicans. How, nice, always blame someone else. Typical. Posted by janem4 at 07:24 AM : Jul 25, 2007

It's YOUR congress, too, janem.Read the article. Especially the first three paragraphs.

Democrapps 30% approval!!

Rethuglicans 22% approval!!!!

You remind me of those chauvinist during the Vietnam war: "We're going to win. We're going to win. Victory is just around the corner."

LOL!!!

Let's see, janem, how many tours of duty did Bush have? Hmmmmm... Oh, ONE. In the Texas ANG.

Hmmmmm... How did a guy who only scored in the 25th percentile on pilot aptitude get into the TANG ahead of dozens of experienced Vietnam veteran pilots? Oh, DADDY's influence.

Hmmmmmm... Why did Bush not complete his obligation in the TANG? Well, *****, that's easy. Would you want to fly fighter jets if you only scored in the 25th percentile? Hell NO! That's more dangerous than serving in combat. LOL!!!

How do I know he scored in the 25th percentile? It's documented in the authorized Bush family portrait written by extreme right-wing Peter Schweizer and his wife Rochelle: "The Bushes - Portrait of a Dynasty." You can read it yourself on page 192; simply go to the library.

Military activities in Cambodia were classified. What is your reference? Why do you keep bringing up Clinton? You're living in the past. Wake up. It's 2007!!

In reference to all the swiftboat comments, just how do you all know they lied?? Why is their story any less credible than, say, the kerry side? Where are your facts other than one side of the story versus the other? Posted by janem4 at 07:24 AM : Jul 25, 2007

The FACTS lie with the Rove slander machine; a machine so efficient that it knocked McCain down and out with one nasty punch in the 2000 campaign. Remember? Remember when they published photos of McCain and his adopted BLACK child? That went over real well in the south! So well, in fact, that McCain had to drop out.

You underestimate the desire of the rethuglican party to be in power AT ANY COST.

Did you sleep through the 2000 and 2004 campaigns? Did you wake up on election day and simply go punch the numbers? I suspect you close your eyes and ears and simply vote the party line, and then defend it tooth and nail, regardless of how corrupt it is.

Proof- From Rasmussen Reports, the American people have spoken and this is what they agree on:

"Sunday, July 22, 2007

In the final poll of a series measuring perceptions of media bias, the Associated Press, local television stations, MSNBC, and CNBC are all perceived as tilting to the left when reporting the news.

Earlier releases showed that Americans tend to believe the major broadcast networks (CBS,NBC,ABC) CNN, and NPR have a liberal bias. Fox News is seen as having a bias in the other direction. In print, the New York Times, Washington Post, and local newspapers were also seen as having a liberal bias."

.....SO......when? is our liberal MSM wolfpack going to implement "affirmative action" programs that include NOT EXCLUDE "moderates" and "conservative".

And we wonder why our corrupt liberal MSM wolfpack press hasn't had "big stories" reporting these opinions from the American public.

Gee.........I wonder why.

With glee the corporate MSM reports on Dem Congress's poor ratings. Any hint of bad news for the Dems gets plastered on every MSM bulletin board and kept there for days.
The GOP had free reign to terrorize this nation and loot it's coffers for 12 years and you had to go to alternative press to get anything about it.
Way to go CBS, this is why i don't really watch your news anymore.

Yeah, right! Which America are you talking about? North? South? Central? LOL.

I didn't spend 20+ years in the U.S. military because I hate the U.S. And I don't hate Bush either. I just think he's a loser and bad for the country.

Plus, I'm ASHAMED that our CinC didn't have the courage to serve HIS country honorably when he had the chance.

Plus, I'm ASHAMED that our POTUS can not speak the English as well as most junior high students, let alone as well as he should for being a Yale/Harvard graduate.

The list goes on...

What Prescott Bush did was to finance it.

I didn't see a hell of a lot of difference between Bush and Kerry (still don't) but at least Kerry has the sense to know who our enemies are.

realpatriot1, you said: In fairness to S-Temper, I think I'm the one who you think is afraid of planes falling on his house...That's my concern, not S_Temper's.

Nah. I got it right. On another story topic a couple of weeks ago S_Temper and another poster got into a big debate (LOL-debate is not the correct word) about the right to own/fly airplanes.

I remember it because it was so bizarre, in both an unusual and strange way. Plus, I've been on the CBS boards for a couple years and that was the first time I saw his login name.

Temper said he was a libertarian and thought it was ok to own guns and vicious dogs, but that people should not fly airplanes. I think his vitriol was vented towards general aviation. One of his statements was something along the lines that he "...didn't want an airplane to fall on his house..." Perhaps he washed out of flight school, or something like that. Who knows...

Little does he know that guns are far more dangerous than general aviation.

Then, as now, he sort of disappeared when the facts became tough for him to refute.

Plus, he never told me who his presidential candidate is or what type of libertarian he is. I'm very interested in his answers to these two questions.

I think he's probably looking those up on Wikipedia now.

the reason G.W. Bush was reelected in 2004, is that we needed a leader who was not afraid of attacking our enemies militarily. Posted by S_Temper at 11:46 AM : Jul 24, 2007
