The Great Barry Bonds Debate

After failing to hit a home run over the weekend, Barry Bonds remains on the brink of breaking Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755.

But, in the wake of Bonds' alleged steroid use, baseball and its fans continue to debate whether to celebrate the historic event.

On The Early Show Monday, the question was put to New York sports talk show host Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, a rabid San Francisco Giants fan, and Boston Globe baseball columnist Dan Shaughnessy.

Neither was very sympathetic to Bonds.

"I am not wrapped up in the home run record. I can't even watch Bonds," Russo said. "… He never needed it. He wanted to be an immortal, and steroids helped him become an immortal."

Shaughnessy remarked, "This is a joyless, fraudulent pursuit of a very cherished baseball record. … There's certainly plenty of more than anecdotal evidence that he was cheating on his way to getting to this record, and I think the fans are not gonna forgive that."

They also chimed in on the National Basketball Association betting scandal and the dog fighting federal indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.

Should Baseball, Fans Celebrate When He Breaks Hank Aaron's Homer Record?

I've heard that Balco Baroid Bonds is trying to do all he can to get Honorable Hank Aaron present when he breaks the record. What's the big deal? For Baseball Balco Bariod Bonds perhaps? Babe Ruth was not present when Hank Aaron broke the record. Neither was he present when Roger Maris hit 61. They did put an asterisk by Maris indicated that he did it in 162 games instead of 154.

We would not have all this dialog if Balco Baseball would come out of the dark ages and make Steriod, Metha, Marijuana, etc. enhancing drugs legal.

Why can't they allow performance enhancing drugs for the batters only? I think aluminum or other alloy bats should be permitted in order to save our trees and the planet. Where's Al Gorre when you need him? Maybe some special type of ortho devices for the batter to enable a faster, stronger swing & follow through?

Leave the man alone!

Folks hated Hank Aaron when he was about to break Babe Ruth's record. He received thousands of racist death threats. His sin was being black.

Now there is endless debate and hatred towards Barry Bonds. His sin supposedly is because he is SUSPECTED of using steroids, even though he has never tested positive.

And now Hank Aaron is being portrayed as a super-hero.

Hmmm! Only in America!

It's so sickening to see most everyone tearing Barry Bonds apart the way you are. I think a great history book should be paid attention to here, especially the parts that state, "don't pick at the stick in his eye until you get the log out of your own", or "those without sin cast the first stone".

Who are you to make up your minds who should, or should not, have the records this fine player has earned? You don't choose who you want to be the top home run hitter, you celebrate whomever it is that happens to earn that title by hitting the ball out of the park the most. You can't just say he doesn't deserve it because you don't like him. This is really sad guys.

OK!!! this man was never caught using any kind of illegal drugs that we know of. Arron is related to Bonds but there are questions about the drug use.
Even if it is not true there is cloud hanging over his head no matter what.
I really do not get involved with Baseball at all but there is time and place for everything he knows the truth and he not speaking about this cloud. Which makes it worse.
I guess he goes by the rule that "silence is golden"
As one of the people said just do what his Uncle did and retire.

shoujoboy, good comment, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. But yeah, if a person breaks a record, they break it even if they ARE cheating. Paying people to perform in recreational sports activities is stupid. Paying them more than teachers, nurses, Firefighters, Police, and other people who are actually trying to make a difference is insane. Even more insane is that people have a bigger problem with the cheating than that.

I will celebrate when Bonds breaks the record. To start off with I don't particularly like Bonds or baseball for that matter, but records are meant to be broken. And in a sport riddled with cheating why not have a suspected (he hasn't been caught yet) cheater break the record. Besides I find it fun. I can't wait for the guy with well hidden cybernetic arms crusing 1000. Viva la long ball!!!

If Bonds wants me to think well of him, he should Tie Arron but not exceed him then retire. I will think very well of him for that. There is no question that he could break the record, only should he and I say no.
