(CBS/AP)  U.S. military officials have announced the deaths of four more American soldiers – killed, along with their Iraqi interpreter, by a roadside bomb aimed at their patrol in east Baghdad.

The blast is said to have occurred Wednesday, during military operations aimed at disrupting the flow of explosives into the capital.

Meanwhile, Sunni lawmakers ended their five-week boycott of parliament Thursday, raising hopes the factious assembly can make progress on benchmark legislation demanded by Washington.

The 44 members of the Iraqi Accordance Front attended Thursday's session after striking a deal with other blocs to reinstate the Sunni speaker, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, who was ousted by the Shiite-dominated assembly last month for erratic behavior.

Al-Mashhadani is expected to gracefully resign after presiding over a number of sessions. Shiite legislator Hassan al-Suneid, an aide to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, said al-Mashhadani's return came after secret conditions that should not be made public.

The Sunnis ended their walkout two days after Shiite lawmakers loyal to anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ended their boycott after officials accepted their demands for rebuilding a Shiite shrine damaged by bombings.

Those two boycotts had paralyzed the 275-member parliament, which is under strong criticism from U.S. critics for failing to approve key legislation and for plans to take a month's vacation in August at a time when American and Iraqi troops are dying on the battlefield.

U.S. officials also made public Tuesday charges of premeditated murder being brought against two soldiers in connection with the death of an Iraqi last month.

Sgt. 1st Class Trey A. Corrales, of San Antonio and Spc. Christopher P. Shore of Winder, Ga., were charged with one count of murder in the death, which allegedly occurred June 23 near the northern city of Kirkuk, the military said in a statement.

The soldiers charged with the premeditated murder of an Iraqi are assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, which is part of the 25th Infantry Division based in Hawaii. The unit is attached to Multinational Division - North.

The battalion commander, Lt. Col. Michael Browder, was relieved of his command in connection with the investigation although he is not a suspect and has not been charged, the military said.

No further details were released, but the statement noted that the charges are allegations and neither of the two soldiers has been convicted.

The charges were revealed on the same day that a military jury at Camp Pendleton in California convicted a U.S. Marine of conspiring to murder an Iraqi man in a bungled attempt to abduct and kill a suspected insurgent in Hamdania.

In other recent developments:

  • A CBS News/New York Times poll found that 61 percent of Americans surveyed think the war in Iraq should be funded by Congress only if there is a timetable for withdrawal. Twenty-eight percent say funding should be continued without a timetable, while 8 percent think all funding for the war should be blocked, no matter what.

  • The U.S. military said Wednesday that three American soldiers were killed the day before in separate bombings – two in west Baghdad and another in east Baghdad. Four other Americans were wounded in the east Baghdad blast, according to U.S. officials who say two insurgents responsible for the attack were identified, engaged and killed.

  • At least 12 people were killed Wednesday in a series of bombings in mostly Shiite areas of eastern Baghdad. Seven of them died in two back-to-back bombings near a gas station in the Amin district.

  • Police say eight civilians were killed when gunmen opened fire in the city of Khalis, a Shiite enclave in a mostly Sunni area 50 miles north of Baghdad.

  • The U.S. command announced the arrest of an al Qaeda leader it said served as the link between the organization's command in Iraq and Osama bin Laden's inner circle, enabling it to wield considerable influence over the Iraqi group. Khaled Abdul-Fattah Dawoud Mahmoud al-Mashhadani was the highest-ranking Iraqi in the al Qaeda in Iraq leadership when he was captured July 4 in Mosul, U.S. military spokesman Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner said.

You want to know why we are in Iraq? It's caled the Iraq Oil Law, that Bush is trying to ram down the throats of the Iraqi Parliament....

WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders declared their support for the tens of thousands of Iraqis, including labor unions, who are protesting the Iraqi oil law 'benchmark' that the Bush Administration and supporters are seeking to impose as a condition for reconstruction aid.

On July 16, Iraqis took to the streets of Basra in a demonstration organized by the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions against the proposed law, which would place 2/3 of Iraqi oil under foreign control, granting 30-year contracts to US and UK energy corporations for 'development' of Iraq's oil resources.

GREAT! After LYING our way into an INVASION, bombing civilians, throwing people at random into Abu Grhaib, searching homes, destroying cities, killing civilians at checkpoints cuz they didn't stop in time... NOW we want to steal their Oil.
As if the Iraqi insurgents didn't already have enough reasons to hate the US foreign Occupation!

Why this article cannot be true....Bagdhad is now a very safe place, where Sunnis and Shia both join American forces to oust Al Qaeda, and instead of roadside bombs, occupiers and Iraqis alike plant flowers and lollipops. This is all just needless fearmongering again. Patreaus and McCain already told us Bagdhad was secure, now that our troops have SURGED so much for the past 4 years that they are finally in place to be effective. (not)

Kerry: No Bloodbath In Vietnam After US Redeployment
Sen. John Kerry said during a C-Span appearance that fears of a bloodbath after the US withdrawal from Vietnam never materialized. He says he's met survivors of the "reeducation camps" who are thriving in modern Vietnam. An award-winning investigation by the Orange County Register concludes that at least 165,000 people perished in the camps.

Our Prophet commanded us to fight the kaafirs when we are able and to attack them in their homelands and to give them three choices before we enter their lands: either they become Muslim and be like us, sharing our rights and duties; or they pay the jizyah (poll tax) and feel themselves subdued; or they fight, in which case their wealth, women, children and homes become permissible as booty for the Muslims.

    Make that %u201Cour age bracket%u201D.

I voted for Reagan twice before I finally realized that he had started the financial bankruptcy (cut taxes, borrow, and spend) of the United States. Bush Jr. is doing his best to finish what Reagan started. The Iraq fiasco, as bad as it is, pales in significance to the integral damage done by this administration. I.e. Trashed the Constitutional rights of ALL U.S. citizens, decreasing national security by increasing terrorism, , doubled the debt pit, Shamed the United States with it%u2019s use of torture and illegal detainment.

And perhaps more serious than the loss of integrity and world trust is the horrible stench that Bush, personally, has cast over the Office of president. This stench will affect the thinking of the people not just about Bush alone, but also about all presidents, past and future .

If trolls have something to offer, that's one thing, but Lars posts the same cut & paste cr*p he's been posting for months.

I consider "singinrick" to be a troll based on his past behavior, but if he chooses to offer intelligent (?) discussion, I'll engage with him. But only for so long because he is boring after the first few exchanges.

Americans, lacking the moral backbone and integrity to deal with the vile lying monsters who launched this unconstitutional and immoral war against an innocent people support a 'time table'...

I'm an American (sort of, I'm a Texan) and if I had the power, Bush, his entire administration and any Congressman who continued supporting the occupation of Iraq, or the "war on terror" generally, would be in their new homes (prison cells) in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

We could let them live with their version of "justice." Which is being held without charges or trials based on nothing more than someone claiming they did something. The something being unspecified.

Any time table that gives the appearance of action...without troubling about our savage war against innocents... rationalized as a 'mistake' by those who refuse to face the smiling face of evil...the banal empty head they see in the medicine cabinet mirror.

    As do all intelligent people.

(sorry, Iceman, but it's not very smart responding to a known troll)

That's what trolls do. And, why it is annoying that CBS allows them to infest their boards. I enjoy reading what others have to say, but I'm not going to wade through fifty pages of troll drivel to find the one or two intelligent comments.

And, troll feeders are as bad as the trolls.

(yes, Iceman, that's you, apologies once again...)

The reason intimidating catch-phrases like %u201Cif we leave they will follow us home%u201D, or %u201Cfight them there so we won%u2019t have to fight them here%u201D is so effective, even when they are so obviously idiotic, is because simple logic is disregarded and all questions are simply ignored.

We agree. Nice summation worth reading.

I do have to admit that in my younger years, I tended to follow whatever propaganda the government or media (same thing?) promoted.

I specifically recall falling victim to the "evil communists taking over the world" propaganda that LBJ used to justify the Vietnam conflict.

I am not nearly so gullible in my older years. As a matter of fact, I automatically assume government officials are lying until proven otherwise.

Which seems to more effectively discern the truth than following the crowd. Unfortunately, it seems many others in my age bracket remain as gullible as they always were.

    They should know better.

How does US troop presence in Iraq or anywhere else prevent someone, Islamic extremist or otherwise, from packing a vehicle with explosives and detonating it a shopping center, school, or any other public place in the US?

Many people refuse to spend much time actually thinking, especially if it is outside their own general bias.

Catch phrases are easily remembered and repeated with no real thought involved, while even simple logic requires a small measure of rational, dot connecting, subjective thinking.

Of course if a person does start %u201Cconnecting the dots%u201D someone will just use another famous catch-phrase, "conspiracy theorist", to discredit him/her.

People do not actually buy the Oft-used phrases claiming that the terrorists are being tied down in Iraq though.

Just look at all the people in NYC who are/were trembling in fear yesterday that their steam pipe explosion really was another 911-type attack.

    "Einstein was a pacifist."

He did help invent the atomic bomb, but he regretted it later. Maybe he thought it was only going to be used for Fourth of July fireworks displays.

Quotes by right wing partisans should be doublechecked.

lars008 just quoted Einstein out of context, to make him sound warlike. Einstein was a pacifist.

Beware especially of Churchill quotes. Right wingers like to manufacture them in the hopes that no one will doublecheck them.

Somebody here (a right winger, I forget who) quoted Plato as advocating the abolishment of all laws. Nothing could be further from what Plato actually believed. The quote was by a person in his Dialogues with whom Plato disagreed.
