(CBS/AP)  When Gareth Groves brought home his new Hummer SUV, he knew his eco-friendly neighbors disapproved. But he didn't expect this.

His Hummer only lasted five days. On Monday, two masked men were seen taking a bat to every window, knifing each tire and scratching a message into the body — "For The Environ."

"The thought of somebody vandalizing it never crossed my mind," Groves, who lives in an upscale northwest Washington neighborhood with his mother, told the Washington Post. "I've kind of been in shock."

Now, as Groves ponders what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV, he has been the target of a number of people who have driven by the crime scene in his upscale neighborhood and glared at him in smug satisfaction, the Post reports.

"I'd say one in five people who come by have that 'you-got-what-you-deserve' look," said friend Andy Sexton, 27, who is visiting from Arkansas and has been helping Groves deal with fallout from the crime, told the Post.

Neighbors admit they don't like gas-guzzling Hummers. But they aren't condoning the vandalism.

Neighbor Lucille Liem, 37, who owns a Prius hybrid, told the Post that a common sentiment in the neighborhood is that large vehicles are impractical and a strain on the Earth — and Hummers in particular are a symbol of consumer excess.

"The neighborhood in general is very concerned with the environment," said Liem, whose Prius gets about 48 miles a gallon compared with the Hummer's 14 miles a gallon. "It's more liberal leaning. It's ridiculous to be driving a Hummer."

Liem quickly told the Post that she does not condone violence.

Police say they haven't seen vandalism so severe with a clear political message in recent years. Investigators say they don't have many leads.

"I'm worried about what I do now," Groves told the Post. "If I get it fixed, do I put it back in the same spot three weeks from now?"

But if I didn't have to worry about fuel, I'd much rather have an SR71, with that I could breakfast in Paris, New York, L.A. and then lunch in Hawaii followed by an evening repast in Hong Kong.

Destruction of personal property & freedom of speech,
are two VERY different things

Typical liberalism...no real surprise to me.

Fortunately, I live in a state where it is legal
to defend yourself AND your property. My state
also allows concealed weapons permits.

These eco-nuts wouldn't dare attempt that here.
Good way to get yourself killed.

We all have a duty to be better caretakers of the planet we all live on. There is a war and we need to use gas wisely. He earnt it but he can use the bus as DC has a bus system his use. I think you misjudge them. Vandalism is wrong and you know it.
Big Brother nope a nanny govt. Some are smart arses and that I am not. So use the bus, conserve on water, ration gas,use cloth bags, use the BUS, walk, bike, etc. I saw a program on gas or the lack of it. And when gas runs for good then you be whining as that car will be useless. So don't be surprised. I am not crying wolf. OIL WILL RUN OUT. I am 52.

I guess you don't recall the WTO that was here in Seattle. Well I do and they vandalised businesses and the like. There was no need or call for that. We went into the city and it looked like a war zone. I think this was awful that they did not care who they hurt. It is the same in this Hummer issue. It is terrorism and that simple. It is attacking others things. I feel he could have gotten a car/truck that is better on gas. I am in my 50s and I am pissed when gas is watsed as it hurts us who can't drive and it raises prices sky high on everything. So it don't matter where yer live. Yeah you learn right fast where it hurts in the pocket book. Educate yerself to the life of the poor. I worry about the day when gas is gone forever and the the war zone it will cause. That day is coming. It is scary thot. I am poorly schooled but I am not dumb. I wish they would use mass transit as that will get cars off the roads. I think us older folks learnt to take care of what we have. The young they need them lessons. I use clothe bags, recyle, take care of my computer that is almost a year old.I use the microwave as a legally blind multi disabled person.

More should do this to the people who drive SUV's and other gas guzzling vehicles. Why do you think we are in Iraq--oil for the gas for these ridiculous vehicles? It doesn't matter if we can afford the gas, it is the idea that it fuels the need for the war. 14 miles to the gallon, how stupid can you get to want a car like that. Hummer's are ugly anyway. Terrorism thrives on our "needs to have it all" society.

This isn't the 60's and 70's when we could afford 25 cent and 55 cent gallon of gas to burn in our old yank tanks. This country is so wasteful of its resources, the day will come when we won't have access to any. What then??

How ridiculous! Why do people think they have the right to tell us what we can or cannot drive? Ms Liem, just because you believe he's driving the wrong vehicle doesn't mean you're correct. See, that's the beauty of being an American -- the right to choose! Mr Groves, I suggest you drive on and enjoy your Hummer. If I could afford one, I'd certainly buy one. BTW: I live in Hawaii and only drive about 1,500 miles per year. So, I'm giving you a voucher for the gas I don't use! Happy driving!!!

When a person buys a HUMMER, it is all about their EGO. It is actually quite funny how ridiculous some men are. They really are like children, aren't they?

Why does it matter to anyone else? He's the one paying for gas every 10 minutes. If you want to drive a hybrid, then go get one. What about all the actors/singers/sports stars driving around in hummers and owing 30 cars and personal jets? What do you plan to do to them?

I have never posted on any website, but the ignorant and completely unproductive language used during the previous postings has prompted me to do so. Using inflammatory language, profanity, and incorrect stereotypes dont do anyone any good. For people on both sides of the arguement-please educate yourselves! Otherwise, no one will take you seriously ( living in dc has taught me that).
