Is Al Qaeda Planning A Summer U.S. Strike?

(CBS)  The re-emergence of al Qaeda in a safe haven in Pakistan is driving the fear of a summer attack on the United States

Despite a six-year war on terror, al Qaeda is having renewed success in raising money and recruiting jihadists, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. Numerous raw intelligence tips also say the terror organization has re-established a semblance of command and control with the ability to dispatch operatives.

"Well, they've been able to do it in the past, as far as moving people into Europe, into the U.K.," says CBS News terror analyst John Brennan. "I think the intelligence services have good intelligence that shows that al Qaeda has been able to move those operatives."

U.S. officials say they can't prove or disprove reports that a new al Qaeda cell is in the U.S. or on its way. That information from one source in Afghanistan is described as "suspect" and has not been corroborated.

But there are other troubling signs that something bad is brewing — the recent attacks on London and Glasgow, a deadly string of bombings in Northern Africa and a relentless propaganda campaign from al Qaeda, which officials fear represents a renewed confidence.

"All of this causes me in general to look at the summer as time when we have somewhat more risk and we need to be very vigilant," Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff said.

Al Qaeda has a history of striking in summer months. The attack on America was launched in September, the British train bombings happened in July, and it was just last August when authorities uncovered a plot to blow up U.S.-bound airplanes.

"There has been no letdown in al Qaeda's determination to carry out an attack against the United States. We have slowed them, we have hurt them, we have damaged them, but we have not eliminated them," says Brennan.

But U.S. officials so far haven't connected any new dots. They say there's no evidence of an imminent attack, though they worry about what they don't know.

Re: "But There Are Worries U.S. Intelligence May Be Missing Something"

You've sure got that right!

That "something" that they are missing is called 'credibility'.

The illegitimate and mass-murderous Bush regime is in rough shape. I would not be surprised if they orchestrate another terror attack on U.S. soil, in an effort to maintain power.

Such an attack will be credited to 'al CIA'da', of course, with unsupported 'links' made to Iran.

CBS News will be complicit in this crime, for parroting unsubstantiated nonsense, while abandoning investigative journalism, and the public trust.

"Is Al Qaeda planning a summer attack?" You spelled Al Qaeda wrong again CBS,Its spelled CIA. Is the CIA planning a summer attack? The answer is "not until the American citizens revolt about Iraq reaches a boiling point,THEN the CIA will attack us and blame it on Iran and to save Americans we will then invade Iran."The only real question is which American city will the CIA sacrifice this time,NY worked out so well last time they may go back again. Its not the least bit complicated.

It really scares me that whoever carried out the anthrax attacks is still on the loose after all this time.

It may have been a terror attack by a foreign or domestic group or possibly a psych operation by a US government entity.

In any case, the persons responsible may do something worse next time unless they are stopped.

It sure would be good to see them behind bars.

I am supprised that so little focus has been placed on making that happen.

Sort of like the sad story of New Orleans.

Congress and the Senate need to get it done and get on the case of those who are sitting on this case and not getting it done.

Typical.

The suicide terrorists cannot carry out their plans of sloppy mass murder, they are not able to do what they say they are liars. Suicidal mass murderers of bystanders like alqeada and taliban are not honest and don't speak truth. They lie to their murderers promising *** with 72 virgins forever if the commit devilish, wicked acts of evil deeds and commit suicide. Sure if the suicdal terrorists rebels declare attacks against good people enough times someday they will get lucky. But I declare attacks on alqeada against taliban and other radical islamic militant terrorists gangs. Yes they will be harmed and destroyed along with their stockpiles of weapons.
