(AP)  In a rare confirmation, Iran on Tuesday said a man convicted of adultery was stoned to death last week in a village in the northern part of the country, Iran's judiciary spokesman said.

Jafar Kiani was stoned to death in Aghchekand village, 124 miles west of the capital, Tehran, on Thursday, Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters. It was the first time in years that Iran has confirmed such an execution.

"This verdict was carried out Thursday," Jamshidi told reporters.

Death sentences are carried out in Iran after they are upheld by the Supreme Court. Under Iran's Islamic law, adultery is punishable by stoning.

Jamshidi didn't elaborate on how the stoning was carried out, but under Islamic rulings, a male convict is usually buried up to his waist while a female criminal is buried up to her neck with her hands also buried.

Those carrying out the verdict start throwing stones and rocks at the convict until he or she dies.

International human rights groups have long condemned stoning in Iran as a "cruel and barbaric" punishment.

Earlier Tuesday before Iran confirmed the stoning, U.N. human rights chief Louise Arbour condemned the execution, her spokesman said.

"The execution has apparently gone ahead despite Iran's moratorium on execution by stoning, a moratorium that had been in effect since 2002," said Jose Diaz of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"Stoning is in clear violation of international law," Diaz said Tuesday in Geneva. He said Arbour considered stoning to be a form of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment that is prohibited under an international treaty which Iran has signed.

Also Tuesday in Norway, the Foreign Ministry said Iran's ambassador was summoned by Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere to protest the stoning.

Gahr Stoere was "deeply upset" that the death penalty had been carried out and called stoning an "inhumane and barbaric method of punishment," Foreign Ministry spokesman Frode Andersen said in Oslo.

The reported execution comes two weeks after international pressure, including protests from Norway, caused Iranian officials to delay carrying out the sentence against Kiani and his female companion, Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, who also was sentenced to death by stoning. It was not known if a date had been set for her execution.

The couple had reportedly been imprisoned for 11 years.

Stoning was widely imposed in the early years after the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the pro-Western Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and brought hard-line clerics to power. But in recent years, it has rarely been applied, though the government rarely confirms when it carries out stoning sentences.

There is no official report of the last time Iran stoned someone to death, but there were unconfirmed media reports that a couple was stoned in 2006 in Mashhad, located in northeastern Iran.

A group of women's rights activists headed by feminist lawyer Shadi Sadr have been campaigning to have the sentence removed from Iran's statute books.

In the past years, Iran's reformist legislators demanded an end to death by stoning as a punishment for adultery, but opposition from hard-line clerics sidelined their efforts.

Capital offenses in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, apostasy, blasphemy, serious drug trafficking, adultery or prostitution, treason and espionage.

Yes, stoning is barbaric, lars 008, but so is dropping a 2,000 pound bomb on an apartment building full of children, but that never stops Israel. At least the fellow knew what he was risking with his adultery--the children committed no offense.

trbl24u - I suggest reading the Koran just like you would read any other book, not that it should replace the good words and truth of the Bible. It is advisable to understand your enemy, and the Koran is their instruction book for death, destruction and chaos. I think we should leave them alone and not meddle as well. Our good intentions have never amounted to much in that part of the world. I never understood why we helped Kuwait back in 1993. Why didn't other ME countries come to their aid? When we helped Kuwait, Saudi Arabia was concerend that Iraq might come after them and asked for our help. We built a $2 billion military airport in Arabia, which enraged Osama. He met with the Saudi royals, and demanded that the "infidels" get out of the "holy land." When the royals refused, he became what he is today. We have in many ways created more problems for ourselves in the ME by our misguided attempts to help people who don't understand anything but tribal ideologies and brutality. Even with the latest Iraqi war, the whole premise of going there was faulty - - even if Saddam had WMD's, he never would have used it againts us. After all, N. Korea and the old Soviet empire had 1000's of WMS's, and we never invaded them, even though they always presented more of a threat to us than Saddam ever did. Iraq at the time was also a secular country, with no religious affiliation, and no terrorists. Now, poor Iraq is a mess. The Muslim world does not deserve our help or involvment.

Islam allows men up to 4 wives if the man can afford them, so how is Islam defining adultery? Plus the man gets 21 Virgins if he blows himself up when he gets to Islamic Heaven! So lets see, adultery in Islamic Heaven is okay but you get stoned to death for comitting it on Earth! The suicide bombers should wise up and ask for a month or 2 with their 21 virgins now just to hedge their bets! :)

The fact is that in America, the best guesstimate is that 60% of men cheat & about 40% of women... What's more, men are more likely to engage in relatively unattached cheating like one night stands while women are more prone towards full blown affairs... so we're really only talking about a 10% swing either way & the mitigating circumstances element further flattens the playing field (pun intended). Now while some say men have a double standard when it comes to cheating, many women will try to rationalize THEIR cheating as some kind of retribution or 'payback' for actions historically committed by men against women... Of course, if you're living in the here & now that doesn't hold up very well... After all, as a guy myself, why should I have to pay for crimes I never committed - and why should modern women get off the hook when those crimes weren't committed against them? That's not to say men & women don't still cheat on eachother - just that the "men have been doing this for centuries" arguement doesn't really work to justify anything.

And as far as men getting let off easy? Not in America - if you're a female teacher who sleeps with her students, it's a slap on the wrist & a book deal - male on female students... you're going away buddy. Wife kills her preacher husband? She may be out in 6 months, just by claiming he's abusive w/out any hard supporting evidence. Wife cuts off husband's johnson? Same thing, cry on the stand & you're off easy...

Barbaric, yes, but how else does one compel a guy to keep his trousers up? Unless taxing the guy to death would be a suitable substitute... since so many people complain of high taxes while otherwise divorcing their wives every few years for another...

trbl24u - did you ever read the Koran? All it talks about is death, destruction and chaos. Death is the answer to numerous "crimes" that most consider non-capital (is killing an adulterer the appropriate punishment for that "crime"?) Don't project your Western beliefs and think Muslims are like you - they aren't. Read the Koran and study the history of Mohammed. No other "religious" leader, such as Buddha, Jesus or Moses, went around with an army killing those who refused to convert, like Mohammed did. Islam is a deadly cult - - nothing like areligion you are familiar with.

This is truly barbaric and sick. These people are using their religion to satisfy their primitive sadistic desires.
And I would like to note that I am an agnostic. I worked for several years at a company where most of the people were fundamentalist baptists. I was told I would get my fanny burned. (ie., go to hell). When I was in an office with a door to the outside, a dead bird was left outside my door. There were acts of petty harassment against me. A fellow agnostic and I both truly believe that if these people could have gotten away with it, they would have burned us both at the stake. And most of them were retired military engineers, not high school dropouts. Of course, they were Reagan-worshipping Republicans.

But the accepted assumption in India is that most of India's Muslims were converted to Islam through the sword. Meaning the Indians were given an option between death or adopting Islam. Under Islam, adultry on earth is punishable by getting stoned to death. But, if you kill non-Muslims, you go to heaven and have adultry with 72 virgins. That makes sense! Only under Islam could a sin on earth be encouraged in heaven!!
