(CBS/AP)  The chief cleric of the besieged Red Mosque in Pakistan's capital was killed Tuesday as troops were flushing out entrenched holdouts inside a women's religious school in room by room fighting, state-run television said.

Pakistan Television quoted the Interior Ministry as saying that the radical cleric, Abdul Rashid Ghazi, was killed during the attack.

An army official said Ghazi had received bullet wounds and when he was told to surrender, he gave no reply. Commandos then fired another volley of bullets and found Ghazi dead, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media.

Javed Iqbal Cheema, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, confirmed Ghazi's death and said the cleric's body was still lying in the compound, and that "battle hardened" militants were defending themselves.

Ghazi's death could end almost a day of fierce fighting between his supporters and security forces, but could also spark a violent reaction from Pakistan's hardline Islamic groups, already at odds with the country's Western-backed president.

Commandos stormed the sprawling mosque compound before dawn. Twelve hours later, the army said the complex was 80 percent cleared of militants but it was still trying to root out well armed defenders the government accuses of holding a number of hostages. A local relief agency said the army asked for 400 white funeral shrouds.

The extremists had been using the mosque as a base to send out radicalized students to enforce their version of Islamic morality, including abducting alleged prostitutes and trying to "re-educate" them at the mosque.

Pakistani troops battled militants entrenched inside a women's religious school inside the Red Mosque compound for more than 12 hours after raiding the mosque in the early morning hours Tuesday. A government official told CBS News that 50 militants died in the first two hours of the attack.

Eight Pakistani soldiers also were killed, the army said.

Khalid Pervez, the city's top administrator, said earlier as many as 50 women had been freed by the militants and emerged from the complex, following the escape of 26 children. It wasn't clear if any hostages remained in the estimated 20 percent of the sprawling compound still under militant control.

Gunfire and explosions thundered over the city earlier in the day, as Army spokesman Gen. Waheed Arshad said more hostages were still being held.

"We are taking a step-by-step approach so there is no collateral damage," he told reporters. "We are fighting room by room." He added that stun grenades were being used to avoid casualties among the hostages.

Government officials said up to 70 blasts were heard in the first two hours of the pre-dawn operation led by members of the military's special forces, the SSG (Special Services Group), which began around 4:00 a.m. local time, reports CBS News' Farhan Bokhari.

After last-ditch efforts to negotiate a surrender failed, commandos attacked from three directions and quickly cleared the ground floor of the mosque, Arshad said. Some 20 children who rushed toward the advancing troops were brought to safety, he said.

In addition to the women, Arshad said about 50 suspected militants, some of them youngsters, had been captured or emerged from the mosque since the fighting erupted.

He said the entire compound included 75 rooms, large basements and expansive courtyards.

An officer, who demanded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said earlier that troops had cornered Ghazi in the basement of the school, but held back from an all-out assault because a number of children were being held there as hostages.

Troops demanded four times that he surrender, but his followers responded with gunfire, and Ghazi said he was ready to die rather than give up, the officer said.

There is no excuse for terrorism. There can be no excuse for terrorism. Terrorism is not war, it is crime. If you freely choose to take part in a crime then you have no right to complain when force of law is used against you.
start rant
When the percieved "war" you wage is against civilians and bystanders then it is not a war, then it is a crime against international law, against human rights, against God (under any name) and against your own integrity.
Whatever injustices have been carried out against you, you have no right to inflict on others. This only serves to place you yourself on the side of the oppressors and on the side of injustice.
Whatever has gone before must be placed aside to make way for a better, brighter future for coming generations. The creation of God (by whatever name you know him/her/it) is life. To take a life is to strive against Gods creation.
Bearing all this in mind I never seizes to amaze me how terrorists and their supporters react with such outrage when their criminal activities are repelled by force. Of course your actions will meet resistance, of course the law upholding forces will defend their citizens against your violent crimes, of course people will hate and despise you.
end rant
From Ireland and Spain to Africa. From Central America to South East Asia to The Middle East. Terrorism is not the answer, ever, and it will never be tolerated. No matter how angry you are. There are better ways.

Lars008 - It is not about "non muslims" unite. It is about all the peoples of the world unite against the madness that is terrorism, wherever it rears its ugly head and whatever the perceived cause. Whether it is about a free Basque state in Spain, United Ireland or a bigger share of a country's natural resources. Terrorism is not exclusively muslim or synonymous with Islam. It is much bigger than that. If you're going to fight terrorism then make sure you know what you're talking about. (That is advice, not a flame)

But then in 2000, well before his arrest, something happened which would make Abas question everything he believed in: a fatwa, a religious edict, was issued by Osama bin Laden.

"It should be understood that killing Americans and Jews anywhere found are the highest act of worship and the highest form of good deeds in the eyes of Allah," Simon quotes bin Laden.

Abas and his fellow commanders were ordered to read the fatwa to their men and make sure they carried it out. The others obeyed, but Abas refused. It was his moment of truth. He firmly believed that jihad was to be fought only on the battlefield in defense of Islam; he had always been taught that the killing of civilians had nothing to do with holy war and that it was forbidden.

The fatwa justified killing non-Muslim civilians everywhere.

HAMAS MICKEY MOUSE SAYS
Islamic rule will benefit Christians and Jews
by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook - May 14, 2007
The force behind Hamas TV%u2019s controversial Mickey Mouse clone said today that his children%u2019s television program will continue to promote worldwide Islamic supremacy, for everyone's benefit, including Christians and Jews.

In a long interview on Hamas TV, Hazim Al-Sha%u2019arawi, Deputy Director of Al-Aqsa TV and one of the creators of the Hamas children%u2019s TV show Tomorrow%u2019s Pioneers, said that using the program to promote Islamic rule over other religions is actually promoting %u201Cjustice, goodness and world love.%u201D

Al-Aqsa TV and the Palestinian Authority have been under fire since PMW reported last week that Tomorrow%u2019s Pioneers was using a character named Farfur, a knockoff of Disney%u2019s Mickey Mouse character, to convey messages about Islamic supremacy as well as hatred of Jews, Israel and the U.S. Despite public statements by PA Minister of Information Mustafa Barghouti that the show would be taken off the air until it could be reviewed and revised, a new episode of the program %u2013 featuring Al-Sha%u2019arawi as one of the hosts %u2013 ran Friday.

How come there is no out cry from the Islamic community over the barbarous and terroristic actions of Abdul Rashid Ghazi and him posing as a Islamic cleric. One would think that impersonating a religious leader would cause much disgust in any religious community.

I'm 60 year old and have been through a lot.. the Cuban Missle Crisis and so much more. Honestly I've never been more concerned with the security of our Country. Continuing to KILL the people of Iraq trying to "Give" them our system of Government is not going to work IF the people of Iraq do not want it to be so. It's their country and IF they want to kill each other, refuse to accept the other groups beliefs, then that is the way it is. The "Bench Marks" given were never met and the Gestapo has been working overtime to promote the involvement of Iraq's Neighbor, Iran. It's not like WE aren't involved! LOL Bush is a Southern Fascist, superior to everyone else on the planet, and he can and will kill us all proving it. Sieg Heil Bush!

Dropping 100 nukes is not a solution. Think how popular we would become when the nuke fallout dust starts circling the entire planet. While still unconfirmed it said Ghazi was killed while trying to surrender. Wasn%u2019t this the same guy who a day or two ago said he would rather become a martyr rather then give up? Got to hand it the Pakistan%u2019s. Go though a 3 year long trial or just drop him on the spot and be done with it. I have a feeling that is the fate of the few other holdouts room by room. I know you%u2019re angry and want this madness to stop%u2026. I want it to as well but at war you go to war, no holds barred. No = way measures. This is like a flash back from everything from WW2 forward and it has never worked.

I had another idea. Naturally because of politics it has a 1 percent chance but how about if for once Russia or China did the bombing. I think that would get the worlds attention real quick. Send out a very distinct message. After all they are close enough to become the first targets years before we will and non of these nut cases are going to be playing with a couple of the guys from the BIG BOYS CLUB. That is and always has been the main problem. We can%u2019t get the big three to agree to anything. What a break through that would be getting one to finally act%u2026. The other would have to follow. China is happy as a clam selling TV%u2019s and Russia is as happy as a clam selling oil and gas along with what ever else they make. I would be surprised if they wanted to see all that get messed up. The US has to stay out of this one to the last minutes or it becomes a danger here. So to China and Russia I would say get involved and don%u2019t wait to long.

Cleric Killed At Besieged Pakistan Mosque
The Big picture is as follows. The elections are round the bend and Musharraf has nominated himself as the new President whether public like him or not. Therefore a detour is necessary.
Sir. To kill anyone in the Holy place like mosques is bad sinful. Why these incidents take place
Two reasons.
One Musharraf wants to set up the stage as the hero.
TWO Mr. Bush this as the fight against the terrorism or Taliban or call it anything but the Muslim population reduction. Then Musharraf comes to Mr. Bush and asks him for more money to kill more of the Taliban. The fact is these may have been dummies. Pakistan is known for creating lots of Muslim fundamentalists. The Maalims that are in the UK are British from the Arabic zone UK citizens but Indians or Arabs or anything. The idea is to divert the whole issue to the RED mosque and state the NHS is n a mess. And we buy this.
Oh Musharraf how far can you go?

Switching Sides: Inside The Enemy Camp

Great news! Pakistan needs to wipe out all the other radical religious schools over there - every last one. They are used as a base for radical clerics to spew hate and ignorance through their Medieval Dark Age ideology. These fanatical Muslims need to be eliminated entirely from the world.

People Please spread Love instead of Hate. By reading most of the comments, it is clear there is no difference between the tererists and the people who are spreading hate between the religions.

they already are haji...

Our Prophet commanded us to fight the kaafirs when we are able and to attack them in their homelands and to give them three choices before we enter their lands: either they become Muslim and be like us, sharing our rights and duties; or they pay the jizyah (poll tax) and feel themselves subdued; or they fight, in which case their wealth, women, children and homes become permissible as booty for the Muslims.
