Stars turn out for the California premiere of Al Gore's global warming documentary.

(CBS)  Al Gore's son was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs after deputies pulled him over for speeding, authorities said.

Al Gore III, 24, was driving a blue Toyota Prius about 100 mph on the San Diego Freeway when he was pulled over at about 2:15 a.m., Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.

The deputies said they smelled marijuana and searched the car, Amormino said. They found less than an ounce of marijuana along with Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, which is used for attention deficit disorder, he said.

"He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs," Amormino said.

Gore was being held in the men's central jail in Santa Ana on $20,000 bail.

Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for his parents, did not immediately return phone messages to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The son of the former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee also was pulled over and arrested for pot possession in December 2003, in Bethesda, Md., while he was a student at Harvard University.

He completed substance abuse counseling as part of a pretrial diversion program to settle those charges.

The youngest of Al and Tipper Gore's four children and their only son, Gore lives in Los Angeles and is an associate publisher of GOOD, a magazine about philanthropy aimed at young people.

to SlipSter01,

Repetition doth not truth make, go easy on the submit button.

Talk about Al Jr., Sr, Bush, Clinton, all of them, it is not germane to the discussion of getting busted for "pot". So what if they smoked it, big F-N deal.

Why should anyone have to be "treated" for enjoying an herb that is actually good to and for you, but deemed by some to be illegal? What does such "treatment" entail, a "clockwork orange" type of forced aversion therapy?

No one has a credible explanation of what is so bad about it, all I hear is "its bad 'cause its illegal" and ask why it is illegal, I hear "its illegal 'cause its bad".

Circumlocution is not productive, neither is blaming the problems on a "wing", be it left or right.

It seems the only danger stems from consequences of being causgt with an "illegal" substance. Legalize it, then that problem disappears.

Watcher269 - Gore admitted to smoking pot before he ever won office here in Tennessee. It was a well known ongoing problem for the locals who wanted to get Al Sr.'s son into office. The example was set by Al Jr. not George Bush. And nobody has to look farther than Al Jr. for a good example of desertion. His Vietnam stint as a journalist was cut short by his admission into Vanderbilt Divinity School (and his father). He dropped out of Vanderbilt by the way never to receive a masters degree. The problem with your comments are a perfect example of what is wrong with politics in this country. Voters and elected officials are more loyal to their party than to the people they represent. Until that motivation changes, this country will continue to avoid solutions to our problems.

"Well after the example our current president has set - growing up doing drugs and alcohol and desertion - poor little gore would not be a potential candidate for president. At least this father is not trying to cover it up!
Posted by Watcher269 at 09:54 AM : Jul 05, 2007"

Bull! Al is running around like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to convince the media and everyone else that this is just a 'private family matter'.

Riiiight. Just like President Bush's daughters clubbing was a 'private' matter (splashed all over the headlines), or the sexual preference of V.P. Cheney's daughter was a 'private' matter (spread all over the headlines). Little Al was just following in the footsteps of his father's idol, Bill "I didn't inhale" Clinton.

And this load of bull that he's now "in treatment". Time to close that avenue for the rich/famous/powerful. Make him do hard time in a desert jailhouse, the little felon. Why should he get out of it be 'going to treatment'?

Marijuana only became illegal after the CIA's MKULTRA project ended ( if it did end ) and after the discovery that Marijuana helped the test subjects not succumb to the mind control effects as easily. This is the main reason the Government Fears the use of Marijuana - My god - a country of free thinkers - what would the country be like if that happened!

The real reason marijuana is not legal is because then the police would lose one of their most effective "probable cause" tools. The police don't care about people using it, they just love the idea that they can stop just about any young person on the street and it's at least a 50/50 chance they have weed on them. You may as well make tobacco illegal too....

Real harm to society are the prescription medications handed out by the bucket-full by our esteemed medical professionals.....who are mostly just high class pushers.....When was the last time you heard of a weed smoker strangling his wife and kids?

How absolutely true, I seem to remember a recent radio station had a water drinking contest, where one of the contestants died from a water overdose. It can and has happened.

brianbwb,

"a very good revenue source for taxes that could very well fund the repair of our education and health care services."

No argrument from me; if it were legal, it would clear up alot of prison space for real criminals also.

to AJMarine1,

As for tree bark, the aspirin industry would be the new coke dealers, as aspirin comes from willow bark.

A blister pack of Bayer could set you back $100 per gram, Doctors worldwide would have to practice their art in prisons, and of course Bush's daughters will be the "blister pack girls" supplying to the entire legislative branch.

At any rate with the anti environmentalists now in power, we may not have trees to worry about soon anyway...
