Philippine Taxi Driver Returns $17,000

(AP)  He needed the money for his sick wife and overdue rent, but honesty prevented a motorcycle taxi driver from keeping $17,000 left behind by a passenger.

Iluminado Boc returned the money to police in Tagbilaran city on central Bohol island last week, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Monday. The woman who lost the bag of cash had just reported it to police when Boc showed up at the precinct.

"It was not mine," Boc was quoted as saying.

Boc, 45, said he was struggling financially because his wife was taken to a hospital the same day he found the money, and they had unpaid rent.

The owner rewarded him with $32 — about seven times what a motorcycle taxi driver makes a day.

Some say it is the phrase used by Bugs bunny to describe a moron, others that it was a phrase coined in the 1940s that combined the word Moron + poltroon.

A moron is a person with an IQ so low they are incapable of intellectual improvement (around 40 or lower) and a poltroon was an archaic word used to describe an ignorant and craven coward with a mean and nasty attitude.

put them together and you have a Maroon--an ignorant person who is really a craven coward with a mean and nasty attitude. This expression is rarely used except by movie buffs and those who frequent film noire nowadays.

Maybe the $32.00 was all the woman had in her purse that was her own money to use and the $17,000 was company money she was on the way to deposit at the bank!!!!!

32 bucks? That's almost more of an insult than giving him nothing. We spend more than $32 on a tank of gas. This woman could have changed this man's life by giving him a few hundred, or thousand. Obviously she can afford it. I bet if this wasn't news worthy she wouldn't have given him a dime. How did she come up with 32 bucks anyway? Why not 30 or an even 40?
