  • In The Spotlight Bush's New Iraq Strategy

A glimpse at some of the key elements in President Bush's new plan for Iraq.

(AP)  President Bush, who faces mounting congressional pressure to end the war, called Saturday for patience as U.S. forces conduct stepped-up operations in Iraq.

"We're still at the beginning of this offensive, but we're seeing some hopeful signs," Mr. Bush said in his weekly radio address, in which he likened U.S. troops deployed around the globe to the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

"We're engaging the enemy, and killing or capturing hundreds," said Mr. Bush, who is losing GOP support for his decision in January to send 30,000 extra troops to Iraq to secure Baghdad and Anbar.

The president said two senior al Qaeda leaders were killed this week north of Baghdad and U.S. troops are finding arms caches at more than three times the rate of a year ago. Despite an upward trend in May, sectarian murders in the Iraqi capital are down from January, Bush said.

He said the last of the U.S. reinforcements just arrived in Iraq earlier this month.

The White House thought it had until September, when military commanders are to give an assessment of Iraq. But most senators now believe troops should start coming home within the next few months, and House Republicans are calling to revive the independent Iraq Study Group to give the nation new options.

"The fight in Iraq has been tough, and it will remain difficult," Mr. Bush said.

He said the Fourth of July on Wednesday will be an opportunity to remember the nation's founders as well as the more than 3,568 men and women of the U.S. military who have died in the Iraq war.

"We remember the spirit of liberty that led men from 13 different colonies to gather in Philadelphia and pen the Declaration of Independence," said Bush, who plans to spend Independence Day with the West Virginia Air National Guard in Martinsburg, W.Va.

"Today, a new generation of Americans has stepped forward and volunteered to defend the ideals of our nation's founding. ... They've helped bring freedom to the Iraqi people," he said. "They've helped make Americans more secure. We will not forget their sacrifice."

Also today, the Senate Democratic leader said some Republicans are "saying the right things on Iraq," but he wants them to vote the right way as well.

In this week's Democratic radio message, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is urging GOP lawmakers to "put partisan politics aside" and vote with the Democrats on the upcoming defense bill.

The Nevada Democrat also accused Republicans of blocking ethics reform and the enactment of 9/11 Commission recommendations.

Reid listed items on his party's agenda that have been able to move forward, like funding Gulf Coast recovery as part of the Iraq spending bill. He also noted successful efforts to raise the minimum wage, provide disaster relief for farmers and fund a health insurance program for low-income children.

In Reid's words, "the progress we've made has not come easy."

The only hopeful sign I see is that the coward repub congressmen that has been licking Bush's azz for the last six years is finally leaving him to hang.

I am in the Military and I have been over there a couple times, I love the United States and the Military brother and sisters that serve, but how many more do I have to see killed or injured to the point its hard to even look at them. I will do anything my Commander in Chief says, as I serve my last 11 months out of 13 years in the Military I am praying that he can and will justify for every death under his command like our Proud Unit leaders do, and I hope that being a Commander in Chief he knows when enough is enough, because we in the Military already know that Our Sisters and Brothers did not die in vain. Happy Independence Day!

George, get a gripe. The only thing left is your stubborn stupidity. Stubborn and stupid are a dangerous combination. The wheels are falling off and you will STILL go down in history as the worst president we have ever had. Convince me that we have an all volunteer military when these men and women are on their third and fourth tours of duty.

grassdeer-- we are working just as hard as we can to do just that . I do not want to see one more death for what, the Government in Iraq is about to collapse, they cannot agree on anything and Pres,=. Bush is determined to veto anything that remotely resembles a timetable and he is trying to preserve his legacy and the history books will not look good at all on Bush or Cheney. The Congress is fixing to send another timetable to Bush and the push for all out will April 2008 so hang in there when you got republicans and the pres. bucking this it is not easy.Your brothers and sisters as you say have done everything asked of you and held that country together. But they have to want it and peace is something they have never understood, and Bush wants an oil agreement for all the money spent. OUR bravest are in the middle we see a light in the tunnel and if politics can get out of it your brother and sister will be home soon.

Thank you for your service and may all good things come your way.

Soldiers do not die in vain if they believe they are serving the nation's best interests. It is unfortunate that we currently have an administration and congress who seem to consider looting the US Treasury on behalf of themselves and their war profiteering cronies to be in our best interest.

Soldiers are not dying in vain, they are being murdered by George Bush, his administration, congress and the pentagon.

However, you are only required to obey lawful order.

I strongly encourage you to reconsider your position of "doing anything the (war criminals) [tell you to do]."

"I was just following orders" was not a defense for German Nazis, nor is it a defense for US forces. No US soldier or citizen is required to obey unlawful orders, regardless of source.

Thank you for your service.

The greatest lie that Bush has told is, perhaps, that he is a conservative. Ron Paul, a real conservative, has voted against each and every one of the big government, big tax, big war, big deficit-spending 'Rockefellar Republican, Neo-Con, Neo-Liberal, New World Order'--call him what you will, but NOT conservative--creature in the White House has put on the table.

The exit from Iraq is a vote for Ron Paul, Mike Gravel or Dennis Kucinich. A vote for the other candidates--Democrat or Republican--is a vote for staying in Iraq and moving on to attack Iran.

Bush is grasping at straws. He doesn't even control Baghdad. Nineteen billion dollars have been flushed down the toilet training Iraqi security forces at, according to Ms. Tyson in a WASHINGTON POST article from the 27th, this is $55,000 per head. 350,000 have been trained. Where are the results? Our Quislings have 350,000 US-trained soldiers and police and they cannot even hold the capital!! Meanwhile we murdered 17 village guards from the air, call them al Qaeda and announce that we have won a famous victory!

Honestly, where does this madman live??? A few days ago he expressed his desire that his god takes care of Castro and brings about Castro's death. Naturally, that after the CIA, even with help from the MAFIA, could not kill Mr. Castro. Since I do not believe in the kind of god Bush believes in, I wonder when this country will have the pleasure of Bush's shameful defeat in all walks of life.

"We're still at the beginning of this offensive." Four years into Bush's war on the Iraqi people, and he says this offensive will turn the tide? Remember when Dickwad said the insurgency was "in it's last throes"? -when he said we'd be "greeted as liberators"? Remember the WMD, and Rumsfeld saying, "We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat." Remember Bush's joke about no WMD anywhere around his office? We invaded Iraq and killed hundreds of thousands of its citizens "because they had WMD" but the commander in chief doesn't care that they never had any WMD, because "the war must go on until we achieve victory".

Military personnel: You are required by law to disobey all illegal orders given to you, even orders given by the commander in chief. This war was based entirely on lies. It is an illegal war of aggression against a nation that could barely defend itself after many years of undeclared war, which included repeated bombings and denying them food and medicine via "sanctions", killing millions of innocent children. Think about it. You know what you have to do.

Impeach Cheney, then Bush. Convict them of the many war crimes and other "high crimes and misdemeanors" they have committed. Sentence them to life in prison. Not to one of those "country club" prisons; let them experience the real thing. The Spirit of the United States of America, the "greatest country of the world", the "nation of law" demands it.

Switching Sides: Inside The Enemy Camp

But then in 2000, well before his arrest, something happened which would make Abas question everything he believed in: a fatwa, a religious edict, was issued by Osama bin Laden.

"It should be understood that killing Americans and Jews anywhere found are the highest act of worship and the highest form of good deeds in the eyes of Allah," Simon quotes bin Laden.

Abas and his fellow commanders were ordered to read the fatwa to their men and make sure they carried it out. The others obeyed, but Abas refused. It was his moment of truth. He firmly believed that jihad was to be fought only on the battlefield in defense of Islam; he had always been taught that the killing of civilians had nothing to do with holy war and that it was forbidden.

The fatwa justified killing non-Muslim civilians everywhere.

IT IS TIME TO DEFEAT FASCIST NAZI ISLAM ONCE AND FOR ALL%u2026

In 1786, Thomas Jefferson, then U.S. ambassador to France, and John Adams, then American Ambassador to Britain, met in London with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the Dey%u2019s ambassador to Britain, in an attempt to negotiate a peace treaty based on Congress%u2019 vote of funding. To Congress, these two future presidents later reported the reasons for the Muslims%u2019 hostility towards America, a nation with which they had no previous contacts.

%u2026that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.

Sound familiar?

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison defeated the fascist nazi muslims 200 years ago
And again 100 years ago with Theodore Roosevelt
Tunisia in 1881 by France and Libya in 1911 by Italy. By then most of the Islamic world was under Christian domination. With the Ottoman Empire defeated in WW1, secularist Turkish rebels in 1923 overthrew the last Islamic Caliphate,

I think, if you check the record there Sparky, Jefferson assured our Arab Allies that we were NOT a Christian Nation and we honored the Seperation of Church and State! I do wonder though, why you constantly use statements from old dead liberals instead of Cons? Don't you want to tell us about the con position just before WW II... President Bush has to understand that the Iraq War has no real support at home. Americans do not support it. The Iraiqs continue to want us gone. No one really knows what will happen if we do leave but it certainly cannot get worse.

The sole reason that Americans do not support this war is more than enough to withdraw. Any politician that supports it, is committing political sucicide.
Since all the Republican political Presidential candidates (even Thompson) support the war (except Ron Paul), this alone insures a Democratic President in 1/2009.

There you go again, lets blame terrorism on the Jews, nice try, but it does not sell. The terrorists are islamic neonazis pure and simple. Some of the comments posted below sound like Mr. Lindberg before WWII. We are engaged in WWIII as we speak and the skirmish lines can be in the middle east or if we elect to withdraw on Elm Street USA, or Downing Street, England. Looks like it is going to be Downing Street first. But considering Hillary and Edwards great insight it is comforting to know the "war on terrorism is a bumper sticker slogan" not a reality. FOR A MOMENT THERE I THOUGHT WE WERE REALLY IN TROUBLE.

From the London Times

Cyber-bullies who plague internet chat rooms with obscene and insulting comments will be banned under the first national scheme to strip them of their anonymity.

People going online will be forced to provide their real names and social security numbers under a new law that makes internet portals responsible for policing message boards and weblogs.

The law has been introduced in South Korea, and is certain to be closely monitored by other countries where there is concern over online abuse.

The move, which is decried by some as an overly fierce infringement of online liberties, aims to curb the most damaging excesses of so-called %u201Ckeyboard warriors%u201D %u2013 people who concoct ***-scandals, fraud allegations and other libels that chiefly target figures in the public eye

Since Sith Lords intend to live for 500 years and Emperor Bush has no intentions of giving up the throne in the Oval Office until 2507, he asks his subjects, in the meantime, to believe everything he says and continue to make babies to provide a source of manpower for the military until he can create a great clone army of storm troopers to replenish losses in the continuing war on terror.

Of course, all the clones will look, act and think exactly like Emperor Bush so that there will be no deviation from the required goal of defeating "terrorism" wherever it exists (and some places where it doesn't), destroying weapons of mass destruction wherever they are found (even if they are not found) and bringing "democracy" to the entire world (no matter how high the body count is!).

SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!

Can anyone tell me ONE thing, just ONE thing that Bush has told us about Iraq and this War that has been right? Sieg Heil Bush!!
Posted by MCVet

He told us it was going to happen. We sent our troops over there, and Bush was right.

He told us that Iran was sending arms and training terrorists in Iraq, and he was right about that.

if folk are 'small time' and 'struggling', whi are most front page folk 'big time' and 'got it made', esp if all those 'big time' folk used to be struggling 'small time' folk that thought life so unfair?

do most folk still make everyone pay for lunch and such though it's been proven that folk that tend to make folk pay are the folk that tend to make folk suffer and die?

Bush told us that Saddam violated his cease fire agreement, and he was right about that.

Bush told us we were going to Iraq for a regime change, and we did.

Bush told us that the demoncraps were playing politic's in congress instead of doing the peoples work, and they are.

So why dont you hold all them demoncap congressment over the same fire you are holding bush over, or dont you have the stomach for the truth.

Seems to me, the worst thing that could happen to them demoncrat party is that they behave the same way they have for the last 30 years, because then, it will be very possible for them to actually lose control of congress again. So far, with the amount of rope they have laid out, about the only thing they are doing is hanging themselves.

There you go again, lets blame terrorism on the Jews
Posted by doctorwho4 at 03:16 PM : Jun 30, 2007

It's wrong to blame jews for terrorism. I have no problem with either the Jews against Zionism, mostly in New York or Liberal Jews in California.

Source of all the evils are those EUROPEANS and their supporters(It doesn't matter with their Religious Blief) who were brought into Palestine after WWII to occupy the land of those Palestinians by force who had nothing to do with the actions of Hitler.

Innocent Europeans killed by Hitler and price paid by those Palestinians who can't even speak the language spoken by Hitler, or Concentration camps in Germany and Isreal founded far away from Germany in Palestine is as Psychotic as Sins comitted by ADAM and EVE, Sinners are those innocent new born children who cant even think about a sin and price paid by a THIRD PARTY named JESUS, it's as PSYCHOTIC as those who love JESUS are GOD-NEGLECTED and those who deny JESUS are GOD-CHOSEN.

Mother of all the evils is the PSYCHOSIS named CHRISTIANITY.

If the troops are fully committed as a whole to staying in Iraq, why does the military need to use stop-loss right now? Why won't it allow anyone who's served their time to just leave the military right now?

Something I watched on TV today showed a bit of Bushes speech after 9/11 where he switched the enemy fom Al Quada to Iraq. I always knew he was trying to show off for his Dad, but geez, enough is enough already. Americans dont want us there and Iraqis dont want us there so lets get out.

hopetrumps ,

Although I don't like Hillary because I believe she's a full corporatist, she wouldn't hurt us in the south. We won't be getting many votes from the country of Redneckistan anyway.

HAMAS MICKEY MOUSE SAYS
Islamic rule will benefit Christians and Jews
by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook - May 14, 2007
The force behind Hamas TV%u2019s controversial Mickey Mouse clone said today that his children%u2019s television program will continue to promote worldwide Islamic supremacy, for everyone's benefit, including Christians and Jews.

In a long interview on Hamas TV, Hazim Al-Sha%u2019arawi, Deputy Director of Al-Aqsa TV and one of the creators of the Hamas children%u2019s TV show Tomorrow%u2019s Pioneers, said that using the program to promote Islamic rule over other religions is actually promoting %u201Cjustice, goodness and world love.%u201D

Al-Aqsa TV and the Palestinian Authority have been under fire since PMW reported last week that Tomorrow%u2019s Pioneers was using a character named Farfur, a knockoff of Disney%u2019s Mickey Mouse character, to convey messages about Islamic supremacy as well as hatred of Jews, Israel and the U.S. Despite public statements by PA Minister of Information Mustafa Barghouti that the show would be taken off the air until it could be reviewed and revised, a new episode of the program %u2013 featuring Al-Sha%u2019arawi as one of the hosts %u2013 ran Friday.

pwrslm 4:06 p.m. We do not hold the demoncap as you call them because 1. we didn't say WMD and use that to go to Iraq.2. We didn't start a war and lie about it. 3. we are not responsible for 3557 death of our troops. 4. we didn't spend 500 trillion dollars for a failed policy. The democrats have only been in office 6 months it is going to take years to turn all this around. we didn't want 12-20 million illegals here your precious Bush did. Anything else'
