Casualties Mount In Push Against Al Qaeda

(CBS/AP)  A U.S. soldier in the Multinational Division-Baghdad was killed Saturday when his patrol was attacked with small-arms fire in the southern section of the capital, the U.S. military reported Sunday. No other soldiers were reported wounded in the attack.

North of Baghdad, a Task Force Lightning soldier died Saturday in a non-combat-related incident, the command said. It provided no further details and said the death was under investigation.

Those deaths added to eight previously reported to raise Saturday's death toll of U.S. troops in Iraq to 10.

The deceased soldiers' names were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Roadside bombs killed seven American troops in Iraq on Saturday, including four in a single strike outside Baghdad, the military said, as U.S. and Iraqi troops captured two senior al Qaeda militants in northern Iraq.

Separately, a predawn operation by U.S. forces working with Iraqi informants in Baghdad's main Shiite district of Sadr City netted three other militants suspected of ties to Iran, the military said.

The U.S. has accused Iran of providing mainly Shiite militias with training and powerful roadside bombs known as explosively formed projectiles, or EFPs, that have killed hundreds of U.S. troops in recent months.

Roadside bombs, including EFPs and other makeshift devices used by Sunni and Shiite militants alike, are the No. 1 killer of foreign troops in Iraq and Saturday's deaths were no exception.

Roadside bombs killed four soldiers northwest of the capital, a U.S. airman in Tikrit, and two U.S. soldiers in eastern Baghdad whose unit has recently targeted bomb networks, the military said. In addition, a British soldier died Saturday of wounds from a roadside bombing the day before in the southern city of Basra. A U.S. soldier also died Saturday of non-combat causes, the military said.

The U.S. military also cracked down elsewhere in Iraq, saying in a statement that seven other al Qaeda fighters were killed and 10 suspects detained in Tikrit, east of Fallujah, south of Baghdad and in Mosul.

It said the raid in Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown 80 miles north of Baghdad, was targeting a senior leader of al Qaeda in Iraq. Two men were shot to death as they sped toward U.S. forces in a vehicle that was found to have a roadside bomb on the back seat, and two others suspects believed to have tied to the militant leader were detained, the military said.

An Iraqi commander in Diyala province, Maj. Gen. Abdul Karim al-Rubaie, said earlier Saturday that two senior al Qaeda militants had been detained there, but the U.S. military said he apparently was referring to the raid in Tikrit, which is in neighboring Salahuddin province.

The U.S. military, meanwhile, said at least 55 al Qaeda operatives have been killed and 23 detained since the start of Operation Arrowhead Ripper in Diyala. It also said 16 weapons caches have been discovered, and 28 roadside bombs and 12 booby-trapped structures have been destroyed.

Earlier this week, creeping house-to-house through western Baqouba, U.S. soldiers made a startling discovery: a suspected al Qaeda field hospital stocked with oxygen tanks, heart defibrillators and other medical equipment.

The find displayed al Qaeda's sophisticated support network in Baqouba, a mostly Sunni city of about 300,000 people.

But, as CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan reports, the U.S. military has said that the top al Qaeda leaders fled the area before the American operation, leaving only lower level fighters.

Baqouba has received little aid or other services from the central government, which feared supplies would end up with al Qaeda. As the field hospital proved, much assistance did end up bypassing residents and found its way to the terrorist organization.

"There are a multitude of systematic functions that aren't working," said Maj. Robbie Parke, 36, spokesman for the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. "The Iraqi government has to say, `Look, Baqouba is in trouble, and we need to help."'

So far that has not happened, U.S. officials say. But there are signs of hope.

"The (Iraqi) government is very immature, but they're getting better and saying the right things. We've got to hold them to that," said Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno, the ground forces commander.

He spoke to AP during a trip to Baqouba on Thursday as American forces began in earnest to squeeze al Qaeda, Sunni insurgents and Shiite militiamen after the arrival of the final brigade of an additional 30,000 troops dispatched by President Bush.

NASTY and FILTHY OCCUPIED PALESTINE (you call it Israel) is your PSYCHOTIC, RACIST, UNJUST and ANTI-AMERICAN GOD's CHOSEN LAND but not America?

Why should we tolerate an ENEMY of UNITED STATES like you and your ANTI-AMERICAN GOD who had chosen some NON-AMERICAN LAND and NON-AMERICAN PEOPLE?

Singinrick, I truely believe in fighting a war for USm, her people and her cause but not for NON-AMERICAN PEOPLE, NON-AMERICAN LAND and NON-AMERICAN ISSUE.

Enemies of United States like you, who enjoy every thing in US but consider NON-AMERICANS GOD-CHOSEN and a NON-AMERICAN land as a HOLY CHOSEN LAND, will reach their fate.

In near future, you will see a great revolution against your ANTI-AMERICANISM from Universities of Burkley, Illinois, Harvard, Wisconsin which will force Anti-American PSYCHOTIC CHRISTIAN to either LOVE or LEAVE United States.

The time is near when EDUCATED PEOPLE of United States will raise their voices agaisnt your PSYCHOSIS "CHRISTIANITY".

Anyway, thank you so much Singinrick.

I couldn't spread HATRED against your PSYCHOSIS "CHRISTIANITY" like you yourself did.
Your rhetoric exposed the EVIL NATURE and ANTI-AMERICANISM of CHRISTIANITY on this board which I couldn't do in hundreds of years.

Singinrick, I am really grateful for your kindness.

How do the soldiers know AQ when they see them....is it because they dress a certain way? Or, are they told by someone that these people are their enemy and to kill them? Or, do they simply shoot back at those who are shooting at them?

As someone else said....first. we were fighting Iraqis in Iraq, then, insurgents in Iraq, and now, it is AQ in Iraq.....so all you Al Qaeda, please come to Iraq so our soldiers can kill all of you and they get to come home......WHAT IS GOING TO BE THE NEXT SEMANTIC BS WE GET BOMBARDED WITH? This war has certainly INCREASED the number of "terrorists", or "people who might want to kill Americans".

Why wouldn't the AQ have a field hospital to give aid to their fighters? They get hurt, maimed or killed just like other humans? Why wouldn't some Iraqis aid the AQ as they may not agree with our presence in their country?

No, I don't see the quality of investigative reporting that was present during vietnam. The media is controlled via limited access as they have to remain in the Green Zone, and probably, their reports are screened by military prior to printing.

I can't keep track of all of the lies. Wasn't one of the lies that we were told about invading Iraq, was to prevent Iraq from becoming a safe haven for terrorists? If that's the case, why is it that were now fighting Al Qaeda at every turn, when they weren't there before the invasion?

Bush isn't from the South...he was born in either Connecticutt or Maine. He's a product of a banking family in cahoots with the Harrimans and other families that are more closely tied to the old New England Federalists. He attended Yale and was a Skull & Bonesman. If you listen, sometimes he will loose his Texas accent and drop into his Down East accent.

Prescott Bush was a Senator from Connecticutt... a big wheel in CBS and, from the safety of New England, his family business interests helped finance Hitler.

As in Rome, politicians liked to be seen at the temples. In the new, shoddy imitation of Rome, things are no different. Bush is seen at Church.
Its like saying the janitor must be very good at Latin because he cleaned the Latin classrooms every day for thirty years.

This is a man who said that God told him to strike Afghanistan and then Iraq. I am more inclined to believe Son of Sam when he claimed the dog told him to kill...

As the song asks..."Well tell us Christian president, just who would Jesus bomb?"

"No war for oil", "Bushitler", "9/11 conspiracy", "the war is lost", "sheesh", these are all approved phrases; use them freely and liberally, 10 points if you can work one of them into everyday conversation.

Yet again you, being a Fascist, attack the messenger. Maybe you honestly DO think we are winning... I just wonder what in the blue blazes would make you think that. I have studied History for over 30 years and I can't find a better example of a good old fashioned Butt Whoopin than this one. The Enemy here has been on top of Bush from day one and have completely whipped the Little Nazi. It's not Un American to tell the truth Sparky. The Enemy in this case studied and understood the wacked out mentality of Southern Fascist and played it to their advantage. Where else in this world would they have a better chance to kill our kids than in the streets of Bagdad in the middle of a civil war. To win you MUST learn to be honest about the performance of your leaders.... Bush is such a failure that there is NO success against those who ATTACKED this nation. In fact those who attacked this nation aren't even IN Iraq. We went from support given by the vast majority of the world to having a leader who is compared on a regular basis to Hitler and you have DEFEAT period!! Sieg Heil Bush!!

Folks WHEN the Pathetic Excuse of a President Attacked Iraq he did so because Bin Laden was defeated, according to him, and wasn't important anymore. This is just one of a list of mistakes and incompetence that has put this nation in a position of complete failure in the middle east. Here at home he and his Religious Ally's have used division and hatred to win elections, completely IGNORANT of what makes this nation strong. Now we are ALL looked upon the way people used to look at our south only. No one talks about Victory in the War on Terror anymore because we are so obviously LOSING that we are grasping at ways to save face. This is what happens when you elect Southern Fascist to lead the nation. They have NO idea what the Constitution stands for and thus find themselves fighting REAL American's because they are trampling it. Time to change things... time to stop pretending to understand what Old DEAD Liberals meant when they lead us to victory. Sieg Heil Bush!!

first, to evangelist singinrick

The only, certainly the main reason, that the right wing christian movement, such as that horror Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson, and the outed "family value" guy (fill in the blank) support Israel is to bring on Armageddon, as "prophetized" in Revelations, and bring on the "Rapture" so that all the Jews and every one else except themselves can burn and go to hell while they shed their clothes and fly up to heaven. For the moslems, they get virgins when they get there. This is christianist idiocy jihad just like Islamist jihad, justifying mass murder on a book written by men to promulgate a cult.

God forbid we should elect a president who believes this ***, and would not stop WWIII, saying is is preordained by the bible. Maybe we already have. ?"

Also, not supporting the war is not the same as not supporting the troops. I have worked with the USO four times in Iraq and Afghanistan. I support the soldiers but not the war in Iraq. Our troops, whom I agree should be in Afghanistan, but not Iraq, are also victims of this administration's horrid and bungled foreign policy.

To J - I think you would make better arguments if you calmed down your tone.

Smirk5 and J- everyone can have his or her personal reasons not to serve in the military, just ask practically everyone on right wing radio or in this administration.
