Official: Iran Open To Nuclear Compromise

Envoy Says Tehran Is Ready To Give Answers On Past Activities With Conditions

(AP)  Iran is ready to provide answers on past suspicious nuclear activities to the International Atomic Energy Agency within the next few months, the agency's head said Friday after meeting with the country's top nuclear negotiator.

But the Iranian official suggested the offer was conditional to an end of U.N. Security Council involvement in Iran's nuclear program. The council has already imposed two sets of sanctions on the Islamic republic over the past half year for its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment and is poised to impose new penalties.

Such terms would likely be unacceptable to the five permanent council members plus Germany — the six powers that have spearheaded the effort to pressure Iran to give up its enrichment ambitions.

The Security Council has demanded that Iran provide answers to the IAEA, the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, on activities that could be linked to a weapons program. But it has also called on Iran to freeze enrichment and stop building a heavy water reactor that will produce plutonium — like enriched uranium a material that could provide the fissile core of nuclear warheads.

With the main emphasis on blunting the possible nuclear threat from Iran by depriving it of technologies that could be used for such weapons, any concession that falls short of suspending both enrichment and construction of the reactor was unlikely to be far reaching enough.

Still, the timing of the offer by Ali Larijani, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, appeared to be designed to exploit possible cracks among the six world powers. Russia and China are opposed to quick council moves to new sanctions, while diplomats say Germany in the past has appeared ready to accept a compromise that falls short of a full enrichment freeze.

The Iranian proposal, to IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei, came on the eve of a new round of talks between Larijani and Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy chief and built on a recent offer by Larijani to provide answers to questions sought by the IAEA in its four-year Iran probe.

"I hope that in the next few weeks we should be able to start planning a plan of action which I hope that we should be able to conclude within two months," ElBaradei told reporters at his Vienna headquarters. "This would be key to our ability to provide assurances about ... (the nature of) Iran's nuclear program."

But Larijani suggested the offer was conditional on reaching a "political understanding with Mr. Solana" — apparent shorthand for a deal in which the Security Council drops or at least suspends its involvement in Iran's nuclear file.

Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Its neighbors, Russia and China are not freaked out by the Anglo-American campaign of fear aimed at rousing the world against Iran.

The object lesson of the Stupid People's War is that even if you have no WMDs, you will be attacked if you have oil. The Iranians have every reason to have a nuclear weapons program, but that, according to all evidence, is not what they are aiming to do.

The Iranian economic plan is sound. With oil at high prices, it makes more sense to sell it on the international market than to burn it up making electricity which can be done cheaper with nuclear power--in the 1970s, the US was eager to sell them the reactors...and it was on the basis of this economic reasoning as well.

Iran is living within the bounds set by international treaty. The US, Iran and the world would be better served if talks for the restoration of diplomatic relations began and the threat of yet another war for Zionism with American blood and treasure was put to rest.

Not true--I'm not defending radical regimes, I'm attacking them. Also, I have yet to post an unkind word against any Scandanavian country--all of which are more charitable than the regime of which you post.

I notice that you, of course, don't worry with any facts regarding the Iranian nuclear program...that is what "speaks volumes."

There is another super carrier heading to the Middle East...I wonder what the unreasonable demand of the Neo-cons will destroy any chances of an agreement.

Unless Rockefeller and the elitny start to feel their domestic power in danger they will continue to press for war against Iran....two-faced as usual.

Our servicemen are the only ones who will be able to stop this insanity if they decide to strike Iran--and we need to support them!

In addition to "providing answers" to the IAEA about its nuclear program (with the exception of anything dealing even remotely with its nuclear enrichment, its weapons program or its development of nuclear warheads for its long-range missiles), Ali Larijani offered to sell a large bridge in Brooklyn to the Bush Administration.

Both Condi Rice and the IAEA expressed their satisfaction with the offer, callling it "intriguing" and that it demonstrated "real progress" in dealing with the crisis.

Re: "Official: Iran Open To Nuclear Compromise"

They always have been. They even offered to suspend uranium enrichment ahead of negotiations, if the U.S. did the same...a perfectly reasonable offer, of course, but we know how the Bush pirates love their nukes.

Nothin' doin', said the Bush puppet.

Iran is the sum total of its parts, Iran is not isolated pieces. Therefore if Iran is hostile towards Israel for example, like Iran very much is and its no example, its real hostility, no country as evidenced by the unanimous U.N. Vote for sanctions against Iran is going to trust Iran with nuclear technology! If Iran did not have hostile rhetoric towards Israel, Iran's claims of peaceful nuclear acquisition would hold more weight and it would be hard to object to and deny Iran. The problem is Iran does not want to face the fact that the problem is Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's hostile rhetoric and posture towards Israel. On the one hand Ahmadinejad is talking about using nuclear technology peacefully and on the other hand Ahmadinejad is talking about wiping Israel off the map! Ahmadinejad must think the world is a bunch of fools, nobody is going for that! Get real dude!

Israel is clearly the only run amok rogue terror-State in the region that poses any real threat to anyone, and they are thought to have over 100 illegal nukes.

If anyone were truly concerned about nuclear threats and unstable terrorist regimes, their attention would be on Israel, in my opinion.

The U.S. has already donated more than enough blood, teasure, and dignity on the behalf of Israel's extremist leadership.

Omert's popularity is something like 14%, and the recent President of Israel is defending himself against rape charges. There is no telling what the Israeli fanatics might try at this point.

FeelFree1,,,

Israel did not get that way by itself! Israeli%u2019s grew up only knowing hate and daily attacks against them for decades by Islam. Islam helped create and shape Israel. I find it hard to believe if Islam was peaceful towards Israel, Israel would still be the way it is. Islam%u2019s hate and desire to destroy Israel did a lot to create fortress Israel. If you were an Israeli or the leader of Israel you would be forced into this current posture, you would have no choice. Islam does not want peace with Israel, Islam wants to destroy Israel, take Israel%u2019s land and give it to the Palestinians. Israel has tried everything for peace, even returning land with no success. It%u2019s clear that if you put yourself in Israel%u2019s shoes, if you were the Israeli leader, you would appease your Islamic haters and turn over Israel to the Palestinians and beg for a place to live. The only way %u201CYOU%u201D and Islam can make Israel look like a real monster is to be peaceful towards Israel and show the world that Israel remains the same, in which case everyone including the U.S. would be against Israel, but that day will never happen especially with Iran not even recognizing Israel at all and wanting to wipe Israel off the map. Put yourself in Israel%u2019s shoes if you can.

Israel is one-thousandth the size of the Arab countries and surrounded by hostiles who have sworn its destruction and repeatedly waged war against it, yet if it had any nukes, as you declare, it has never tried to use them in its struggle for survival -- very odd behavior for such a "run amok rogue terror-State".

"...and they are thought to have over 100 illegal nukes."

First of all, you have absolutely no idea whether Israel has any nukes at all. Second, if Israel did have nukes, they wouldn't be "illegal" other than in your own warped hatred and desire for its annihilation, wherein any means to protect itself would be %u201Cillegal%u201D.

Calling Israel an "unstable terrorist regime" is like calling the Vatican a "rogue terrorist nation". You only spew such nonsense to muddy people's minds and mask your own pet Arab countries' real and proven sponsorship of terrorism.
