(CBS)  In New York, cops armed with Geiger counters pull over trucks for random inspections.

Robotic underwater cameras crawl along the hulls of cruise ships looking for explosives and traces of radioactivity.

And from the air, sensors snoop for radiation hot spots. It is the last line of defense against an unthinkable threat.

"Terrorists — al Qaeda, bin Laden — have sought nuclear materials for a number of years now," FBI Director Robert Mueller told CBS News correspondent Bob Orr in an exclusive interview.

Mueller says terrorists would like nothing better than to hit the U.S. with a nuclear weapon.

"When we saw 9/11, everyone I think pretty much looking at those pictures thought this is about as bad as it could get," Mueller said. "Its not as bad as it could get. A nuclear device — if a nuclear device went off, you're talking about devastation that is far, far beyond what we saw on September 11th."

That kind of devastation was portrayed in the film "The Sum of All Fears," when a nuclear bomb leveled much of Baltimore.

That was just a movie, but officials warn the threat is real, and the bomb wouldn't have to be that big. A small nuclear device packed inside a case and left in the heart of Washington could take out the White House and everything else within a square mile.

"It could kill tens of thousands of people, and that's why it is a tremendously serious matter for us to address," Mueller said.

In Miami Wednesday, the FBI and security officials from 28 countries took part in a drill aimed at working together to detect and disrupt terror cells seeking nuclear materials.

Officials say it would not be easy for terrorists to get a nuke or enough material and know-how to make one of their own. But thousands of Cold War weapons remain in Russian stockpiles, and emerging nuclear powers such as Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea could make nuclear fuel more readily available for terrorists.

Since the early '90s, the United Nations' atomic watchdog has confirmed at least 18 cases of illegal trafficking of weapons-grade uranium on the black market. Most recently a Russian man was arrested for trying to sell the bomb material to a radical Islamic terrorist.

Intercepting the material, and keeping it from the terrorists, is the first goal. Nobody at home wants to deal with an explosion after the fact.

"This is a big deal," said New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "God forbid something like this happens; we have to be as prepared as we possibly can be and do everything we can to deter and detect."

To date, al Qaeda has not been able obtain nukes, but Mueller says they're still desperate to get one.

"It's not hype. It's something we deal with day in and day out," Mueller said. "When you are talking about an improvised nuclear device, it is something that would be horrifying if it fell into the hands of terrorists or terrorists were able to manufacture such a device — and we can not let that happen. We just can not let that happen."

An unthinkable threat — not an impossible one.

How is the FBI going to stop this? With Russia having such lax security on their materials and Iran proceeding with enrichment, I do not know how they intend to stop it. North Korea may not have a large capability, but they need money and would not stop at selling someone what they want for the right price.

"emerging nuclear powers such as Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea could make nuclear fuel more readily available for terrorists. "

All this article is rubbish. I mean the author never knows that Pakistan tested its nuclear capability in 1998. Being an Indian, I know how we live under threat. On every 2nd or 3rd day, Pakistanis test their nuclear warhead capable missiles. Pakistan has more than 50 nukes.
According to him, Pakistan is equivalent to Iran and North Korea in nuclear arsenel! wow.

The first nuclear weapons were so big it took a crane to lift them.

The mini-nukes were developed thanks to the good ol' US of A. If one of them goes off here, be sure to thank all those loyal scientists at Livermore National Laboratories. They've done so much for the development of the backpack nuke.

With the NEOCON job of 911 using a missile rigged plane to hit the Pentagon, who is to stop an airliner in flight with a nuke? Who is to stop Bush with a NUKE? You nimwits are your own enemy. Comes right down to who do you really trust? Bush? Yeah right! You are all liars! Do you trust liars? Liars trust liars? You have more trouble with Cheney than binLadin. You can't find binLadin, and you are trying to find nukes? The only nukes are in your own pants USA. So you let one go...and blame the foreigners. Yeah; yeah that's it blame the foreigners.

Why illustrate this article with a photo of a swat-team in action?
Is stopping bin Laden from accessing nukes a Rambo mission?
Or give the job to Bruce Willis?
Get real! A dirty bomb is 100 times more likely to detonate in London than in the US.
Especially after Bush generated thousands of al Queada followers in Iraq. Pre the war there were at most one or two in that sorry excuse for at nation.
Iraq was never a threat to the western world. Iran - and bin Laden ARE.
Both go scott-free while US AND coalition troops waste lives, limbs and time in that hornets nest!
Somewhere in a mountain retreat, bin Laden is having a real laugh, while the US beats about the BUSH. A (G)reat(W)hopping Bush!

Re: "CBS News exclusive: FBI Director Robert Mueller says terrorists would like nothing better than to hit the U.S. with a nuclear weapon."

Now we know what the Bush regime's plan is for clinging to power. Many of us had already suspected that the Bush regime would need to orchestrate another 'terrorist attack' on U.S. soil, in order to maintain their illegitimate rule, and to be effective, it should be more spectacular than the 9/11/01 events.

We saw the Bush regime quietly introduce 'Executive Orders' giving the regime near dictatorial powers in the event of a 'major crisis', just last month, on May 9.

If we see a nuke detonation, anywhere, in the near future, we can be fairly certain who the terrorists are that are responsible.

The Bush regime could obviously care less how many ordinary people die in their pursuit of the demented, dead-brained, and sub-human PNAC/Corporate agenda.

It is idiotic comments like this that make everything else you say unimportant. To state that the president of our country (my country - I don't know about you) could "care less" about how many ordinary people die over ANYTHING is just inane. He's certainly no saint in my book, and I know he's made many, many hard, but ultimately poor choices, but if you can honestly believe that the leader of the country doesn't care if people die in droves, then perhaps you should skip your sorry *** on over to a friendlier place. Somewhere nice and cozy like, say.. Zimbabwe? Colombia? China? Syria?

Abigail70,

Correction: I meant to say that the unelected Resident and his cabal of global pirates could NOT care less how many ordinary people die in their pursuit of the demented, dead-brained, and sub-human PNAC/Corporate agenda.

We have seen them pointlessly waste 3,513 U.S. soldiers and 1 million Iraqis, so far, in their fraud-based illegal war of aggression against Iraq, alone. There is no way to reliably estimate how many people have been tortured in the Bush regime's secret prisons.

The Bush regime clearly places no value on human life, on the rule of law, or on common decency, and they have demonstrated that they will murder, torture, and imprison as many ordinary people as it takes to maintain power.

For those who doubt the official '9/11 Commission' conspiracy theory (which is the overwhelming majority of Americans, according to surveys), here is a URL for a short online film which summarizes several of the key remaining questions, and clearly point to the need for a credible and independent investigation of the events of that day:

What I don't understand is why the Bush administration didn't think that people would ask questions, and that conspiracies would worry people. Such a huge event, even by an enemy, deserved a big response in the area of: "Don't worry, America. There's nothing evil or strange going on here on our part, and here's why." Those big mouthed talk show hosts are so apt to tell ya that if you got nothing to hide then why worry? Well what about them. What about the government? *** for tat, right? Or square peg.

I mean, thats their job! Right? They're the politicians! They should know how to satisfy people. How to ease the worry of some big giant conspiracy. But no. They don't care? And they don't even think they have to care. In that Nixon movie there was a scene were Nixon just broke down in teers asking: "Why? Why do these people hate me?" And isn't that the truth? They're just incompatible for some reason. They just can't figure out why people don't trust them.

Its sad, really. They should know how to make people trust them. Honestly.

we've been sold the conspiracy - we're uncovering the TRUTH ... and it's beginning to snowball, ever so slowly. it is important to act - call/email your representatives in Washington to DEMAND a new 9/11 investigation. It is imperative. You do not want to be in the next Twin Tower the neocons decide to bring down for their evil global agenda.

What most of you "Useful Idiots" fail to grasp is that despite the fact that we are perhaps a bit paranoid, they are out to get us! Maybe you weren't around for the '72 olympics or you forgot why TWA (the airline) was knicknamed "Travel With Arabs" for their multiple highjackings. Or maybe you could google "Lockerbie Scotland" so you could learn of how an entire 747 full of Americans was knocked out of the sky a couple of decades before your whipping boy George Bush took office, whom you seem to understand as the reason why Muslims hate us. Attention Deficit Disorder generation: Get with the program and come to grips with the fact that yes, we broke Iraq, but if we get out, we lose and sh*t will start blowing up around you. Are you sure you want your little sister's bus blowing up?

About the 3,500 soldiers we have lost thus far, well, look up "D-Day Invasion" or "Battle of the Bulge"... You see, there was a time when this country had some backbone. You are a nation of wimps... You are bringing the American Empire to its end. Well, one day you will explain to your kids how you didn't know what you were doing and that there was a time when we had religious freedom in this country...

here's why:

%u201COn June 5, 2006, the Muckraker Report contacted the FBI Headquarters, (202) 324-3000, to learn why Bin Laden%u2019s Most Wanted poster did not indicate that Usama was also wanted in connection with 9/11. The Muckraker Report spoke with Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI. When asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on Bin Laden%u2019s Most Wanted web page, Tomb said, %u201CThe reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama Bin Laden%u2019s Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11.%u201D
Surprised by the ease in which this FBI spokesman made such an astonishing statement, I asked, %u201CHow this was possible?%u201D Tomb continued, %u201CBin Laden has not been formally charged in connection to 9/11.%u201D I asked, %u201CHow does that work?%u201D Tomb continued, %u201CThe FBI gathers evidence. Once evidence is gathered, it is turned over to the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice than decides whether it has enough evidence to present to a federal grand jury. In the case of the 1998 United States Embassies being bombed, Bin Laden has been formally indicted and charged by a grand jury. He has not been formally indicted and charged in connection with 9/11 because the FBI has no hard evidence connected Bin Laden to 9/11.%u201D

I believe the threat is real.they only have to slip through the cracks once. In the interest of prevention I think they should remove the trash cans from the perimeter of the white house and all other places that may be targets. Or at least make them transparent. I was visiting my son in DC who was there for a special ceremony and walking around the white house i saw a truck stop throw a package in one of those cans and take off.
It gave me the creeps and made me want to duck.

I didn't mention the Pentagon - but now that you bring it up, it was probably wasn't a passenger jet.. look at the photos before the front facade collapsed and there was no damage shown from where the wings sould have hit (like we see on the twin towers) ... we see no airplane seats, no luggage, and most curiously, no skid marks.. it would be easy to put to rest any "truth" theories concerning the Pentagon - all the FBI has to do is release the security camera footage it confiscated from the Sheraton and gas station across the street on the morning of 9/11, which the refuse to do..

some good photos here though - http://911research.wtc7.net/pentagon/evidence/photos/index.html#analysis

actually, I'm not sick - just stating the facts that you won't get on your nightly dose of corporate propaganda ...

how could the twin towers fall at free fall speeds if we are to believe the "pancake" theory? The buildings fell in 9 seconds! If floors were collapsing into the ones below them there would be slight delay before the lower floor gives. If it were a half a second at each floor that would still be nearly 50 seconds - huge steel beams were being ejected hundreds of feet HORIZONTALLY, concrete was pulverized into fine dust, SQUIBS (well-placed charges) are exploding outward up to 30 floors below the collapse wave. All characteristics of a controlled demolition not collapse.

If the threat of a nuclear attack is possible on Washington, and in particular the White House, then a plan needs to be put in to place that permanently separates the President and the Vice President from hundreds, if not thousands of miles away. If the U.S. is incapacitated, nuclear powers such as Russia and China could be compelled to take out America completely. The U.S. has to maintain a working government. If the President, the Vice President and Congress get wiped out, then how does America defend itself? All of western civilization could fall with them. It's not that far-fetched.

Fear the nukes! Mueller and friends want to sell you on a nuclear threat...the clowns who hired him--Fearless Leader and Dead-Eye *** want you to leave the borders unprotected. About a year ago, the Minutemen took a container that they had marked with warnings of radioactivity across the border and put it in front of a federal court house to illustrate how easy it was to cross the border unmolested. They were outdone by a politician who crossed it with circus elephants and a mariachi band which also passed unmolested by the brave those eagle-eyed protectors of America--Homeland Security.

Mueller is as contemptible as his masters. If a nuclear attack is launched against the US, you can depend on it being the work of the same elements connected to the Washington Regime responsible for the 9-11 false-flag operation--Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Silverstein, Rockefellar, Tenet, Giuliani, Rice and other co-conspirators.

The WTC was struck by and airplane flowen by al-quida personnel. That is reality. There was no controlled detonation. saying that it was a controlled explosion reminds me of a quote from the Marx brothers. "Who are you going belive?Me or you own eyes?"

This been said it was a monumental error in judgement to invade Iraq. We needed to save the troops for afganastan and Iran(If needed). Our options concerning Iran developing a nuclear weapon are now very limited and exteremely limited

Hmmm.

As it stands now, insurgents, and terrorists seem to have trouble getting sophisticated conventional weapons let alone extremely sophisticated small nuclear weapons. So far as I understand small nuclear weapons are difficult to make - very sophisticated.

While anything is possible, I think most of us in the US are more likely to be killed by a biological psych ops carried out by our own government than we are to be killed by a suitcase nuclear weapon used by a torrorist.

Maybe the FBI should catch those responsible for the anthrax attacks and murders of a number of years ago rather than talking about this other stuff so much.

Wow, Bush has really let out the PR machine to build a case for invading Iran, don't you think?

If scientists know how to build nuclear weapons and missile defense systems, then isn't if conceivable that ought to be able to build a nuclear missile defense system? Maybe this needs to be another goal in the fight against terrorism, similar to the way the pursuit of fossil fuels like ethanol is intended to wean us off our depedence on Middle East oil . . .

Have you even bothered to consider just how many people would have to 1: be in on the plan, 2: set people up to carry out the plan and 3: carry out the plan (referring to your 9/11 theories)?

Do you HONESTLY believe that such a massive amount of conspirators could've done that, and STILL kept quiet about it? Almost 6 years later? Or do you believe that Bush is such a wizard that he has controlled all their minds (eventhough you sit and laugh and joke about how stupid he is).

Come on man.

For every single "video" and claim about the government doing the 9/11 attacks, there's a line of experts saying that the collapse of the towers was a very possible reaction to the impact of the planes on the structural integrity of the buildings. So "controlled demolition" is kinda far out there...unless of course you have some proof, in which case I'd love to see it. Proof...not conjecture and freaked out conspiracy theorists with their "opinion."

While I respect anybody who questions authority and doesn't sit down for every line that comes out of government, I just don't understand how some people can just ignore base facts and go with outside theories. Proof works.

P.S. Several of those videos have been checked out and found to be doctored.

Roughly as many as it would take to fool the American public into allowing an illegal and catastrophic, fraud-based war of aggression against a non-threatening country, in order to establish a massive military footprint, plunder their resources, and to please their Likudnick masters, by my estimation.

From an efficiency standpoint, it would be desirable to use many of the same people for both efforts.

What on God's green pastures does this guy want to prove? Who does he want to influence? What's the political angle?

Sounds again, like THE FEAR FACTOR at work.

Who would like to wager on a "major" threat, maybe even nuclear, being uncovered sometime around the end of the Bush term?

I'd say our appointed officials should shut their mouths - do their job - and avoid playing the political fear game.

They blew up 36 of the freakin things in the S. Pacific called Operation Dominic. Did they help the Kiribati people when they blew them up over their country Islands? The Kiribati people are so poor they can't even afford a representative for their country at the UN. The radiation from those blasts was much much worse than Chernobly, and 3 mile Island put together. Don't tell us about suitcase bombs, you peanut butter finger licker. Better yet you take responsibility for the attacks to our environment when Kennedy OKed Operation Dominic and give the Kiribati People life, and maybe we will begin to believe your idiotic rants. 36 of the mother phuckers you detonated..Do you know how to ph-ing count? 36 Atomic Bombs you detonated, not counting the 2- two you dropped on Japan, targeting innocent civilians, instead of their military. Millions of GOP lemmings will point the finger of blame at the Democrat president, (even if it was the day after inauguration). Thus forcing tens-of-millions of sheeple to vote Republican purely out of fear.

There's the plan.... just in case you were wondering how Karl Rove would accomplish such a "permanent GOP majority".

It is not anti Semitic to believe there are millions of other good people in the Middle East with valid concerns!

Even Eisenhower had problems with Israeli groups but he did not let them buy him!

Founded in 1953 by Isaiah L. "Si" Kenen, AIPAC's original name was the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs. According to UCLA political science professor and author, Steven Spiegel, "the tension between the Eisenhower administration and Israeli supporters was so acute that there were rumors that the administration would investigate the American Zionist Council. Therefore, an independent lobbying committee was formed, which years later was renamed [AIPAC]." Today, AIPAC has over 100,000 members.[1] Activities and stated goals
AIPAC's stated purpose is to lobby the Congress of the United States on issues and legislation "to ensure that the U.S.-Israel relationship is strong so that both countries can work together" to meet the challenges of "stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, [2] It regularly meets with members of Congress and holds events where it can share its views. AIPAC has been effective in gaining support for Israel among members of Congress and White House administrations.
The New York Times described AIPAC on July 6, 1987 as "a major force in shaping United States policy in the Middle East."

Well the FAILURES BECAUSE OF INCOMPETENCE )FBI) are at it again. Those paranoid fools will do anything to put fear into the people (especially the eldery) so as to remain in power. That agency should be eliminated along with the CIA and an organization like Germany had during the 2nd world war-The German Secret Police-and replace the FBI and CIA, then I believe you would have an efficient law enforcement agency. There would be swift justice and no 20 years of appeals at the taxpayers expence.

Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rice and Mueller are more dangerous to the security and well-being of America than any single nuclear device. Their demonstrated lack of respect for the Constitution and the judiciary are legion. Mueller is little more than an egocentric hack whose job it is to perpetuate the Bush administration's insanity. Unfortunately, their approaching departure won't end the deleterious effects.

Keep in mind that no terrorist can ever destroy America and our freedoms, but the government sure can.
There are some in our government who would like nothing more than to have another terrorist attack on America soil, simply so they can call it a "state of emergency" and impose martial law and the destruction of what's left of our constitutional rights.
It's pretty upsetting also to consider that the CIA helped to make Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda possible in the first place.
