AP Poll: Bush Numbers Match All-Time Low

Only 32% Satisfied With President's Performance; Just 28% Happy With Bush's Handling Of War

The president's agenda, plus facts, figures, major events and key personalities.

(AP)  Public approval of the job President Bush is doing now matches its all-time low, an AP-Ipsos poll says.

The survey, released Thursday, reflects widespread discontent over how Mr. Bush is handling the war in Iraq, efforts against terrorism and domestic issues. It also underscores challenges Republican presidential and congressional candidates will confront next year when they face voters who seem to be clamoring for change.

Only 32 percent said they were satisfied with how Mr. Bush is handling his job overall, the same low point AP-Ipsos polling measured last January and a drop of 3 percentage points since May.

Mr. Bush still wins approval from seven in 10 Republicans, though that is near his historic low for GOP support. Only a quarter of those initially identifying themselves as independents expressed satisfaction with the president, along with 8 percent of Democrats.

On issue after issue, approval of Mr. Bush's efforts matched previous all-time lows in the survey.

Twenty-eight percent were satisfied with his handling of the war in Iraq, down 5 percentage points in a month. Two in three Republicans said they approved.

Only a third overall approved of how Mr. Bush is handling domestic issues like health care, with the same proportion expressing satisfaction with his job on foreign policy and the war on terror. And 37 percent said they approved of his handling of the economy. Support in all categories dropped slightly since May.

In another indication of the public's bleak mood, only 21 percent said they believe things in the U.S. are heading in the right direction, the worst mark since the AP-Ipsos poll began in December 2003.

Women, older people, and those with low incomes were especially discontent. Only three in 10 conservatives and similar numbers of white evangelicals — usually strong GOP supporters — expressed satisfaction with the country's direction.

The poll involved telephone interviews with 1,000 randomly chosen adults from June 4 to 6. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I'm surprised it isn't lower. I had no idea he was an "open borders" advocate. If I had known that, I wouldn't have voted for him in 2000.

Probably an English only survey.

There are just so many levels GWB's support is low. On all issues: Iraq, Global Warming, How Best To Fight Terrorism, Fiscal Responsibility, and Borders. GWB is just such a bain on the existence of America and the World.

And for those neocons so interested, even Fox reports Congressional support higher. Although both are quite low.

When I was growing up in the early 70's, we were taken on a field trip to a mental institution. Our host said that by the time we were adults that "1 in 3 people will be mentally challenged". Therefore, it makes perfect sense that 32% of the population support Bush and his frightening, dangerous idealisim. They are of course, the 1 in 3 our host was talking about.

Where are you getting that from, P2? Is that pre- or post- November election?

And really, what difference does it make? its blazingly apparent that everyone in Washington is a crook, an incompetent, or both. Despite your constant "lib" bashing, the real issue is not about left or right; it's that our government as a whole is the largest organized crime cartel in history (and not all that well-organized, either) and is driving the country to he!! at top speed. The government is working against the people, and Bush is only the most obvious and most disgusting symbol of that.

Its really hard to do a good job when you think the job itself is undoable, but that's the position Bush has taken toward governance his whole life. He literally feels better the more incompetent his administration behaves since it validates his long held view that government is the problem, not the solution. When you've got the great America that Reagan inherited, you can get away with that. Bush is at the end of that kind of self-delusion, and people are finally realizing that non-governance is a handy way for corporations to rip off the American public.

No, most people are against Bush because he is an incompetent, a crook and a liar, like everyone currently in government, regardless of party. As long as you and people like you keep making the issue into a Dem vs. Rep squabble, nothing will get done, and the scumbags in both parties will continue to steal from, imprison and murder Americans.

Until we stop playing into their hands by picking sides among criminals and fighting amongst ourselves over whose scumbag is less scummy, things will just get worse. The people need to get off their super-sized a$$es, climb out of their SUVs, turn off the f*cking television and take back our country.

Our current government is the reason for the 2nd Amendment.

Get a clue mike71067. Most people are turning against him because of his botched Iraq invasion and the continuing death toll there.

There are a lot of other reasons as well, but that is the big one. His style of governing (cowboy is a term I have read) is uniquely his own. LBJ was from Texas and he didn't have that style.

Bush has made mistake after mistake on so many issues, he has disappointed a lot of people for a lot of different reasons.

The Bush Presidency, not the Iraq war, is by far the worst blunder of our Countrys history; and you in the 32 percent that are still staying the course with this clown, please when the next election comes up and you are feeling inadequate again, do the rest of us and the world a favor and de register to vote. Blood money.

These polls just don't work any more. Who answers a landline and takes a poll? Not cell phone users, not people who know how to get on the "do not call" list, not people who go outside and do things. Who does that leave? The crowd who sits around home watching Fox News while waiting for the next WWF event. And only 32% of THEM like Bush? Wow.

I was never a Bush fan. So, his 32 per cent poll rating number makes sense to me. But with similar low approval rate of Congress, and Republicnas still approving Bush by 70 per cent makes me wonder about those numbers. Are they all hypes, or facts?

The US has representative government, which accounts for the diversity of views represented in Congress.

George Bush is a pathological liar, incompetent and corrupt. And, is the worst president in US history. His approval ratings demonstrate that approximately 1/3 of all Americans and 70% of the GOP are pathological liars, incompetent and corrupt. He represents his supporters very well.

It is a source of amazement Bush's approval rating is anything at all above zero. The proposals he endorses to surrender the USA to the Illegal Aliens and establish the biggest Corporate Welfare package ever considered is more than enough to drive his approval rating to zero.

Let us all send him white handkerchiefs to wave at the terrorists and other who will be the biggest gainers in his so-called "Immigration" (actually AMNESTY) bill.

Polls are not very accurate. If you look at all the polls the variations are way to wide to be believeable. Most of the MSM polls can really be suspect. My guess why his base is still with him, or most of them, plus a small percentage of Democrats, is because he is a man who stands by his convictions. He has always been for comprehensive imagration an the guest worker program as far back as his time in Texas. It takes a lot guts to stand against those of his own party, but he is not one to give up what he believes in just to make points. I find it interesting that today Mr Reid said it was the Presidents Bill, not a Demo Bill, now that it looks like it will fail. How quick these folks bail. If the Demos can't face FOX News in a debate, what good are they to this great country. Shame on them.

infidel_us, to each his own. Frankly I was concerned with Reagan because those he represented and they actions they took behind that hollywood poster boi were the beginning of the multinational corporate religiously hyped hypocritcal hostile takeover of U.S. society.

Carter inherited a big mess, he stood for something and is an intelligent man who is socially conscious and genuinely a man of faith. I fail to see any comparison to the greedy high functioning sociopaths that american society through willful ignorance followed with blind fervor. The american people have alot of responsibility for failing to spot the ultimate true values of sustainable society. Greed kills society.

I agree. That's why our democracy will not survive. There's all kinds of greed. If I'm a socialist democrat, like say Cynthia McKinney, and I tell my constituancy that, "if you vote for me, I will see to it that you get the $$$ that you deserve", how is that different than a guy who works for Home Depot, gets fired, and collects $210M dollars?

Once people get elected based on what they promise to give to the non working among us, our country will cease to exist.

I had put some stock in these "Polls" in the past .... but nevermore. How any poll can show an approval rating for this totally inept President(on almost every front),that is greater than an absolute zero, is a total mystery to me. Somewhere along the line I think he has ignored the fact that his personal agenda has far less importance than the will of the American people.

It is a shame the Dems bowed out of a FOX News Channel sponsored debate. It's better to win over people than to preach to a choir. But what do I know about diplomacy?

President Bush has convictions, and I don't entirely disagree with what's going on either. But one thing is true: The whittling away of American jobs is a significant factor for ANY politician's rate of favor. The reasons seem obvious; nobody wants to be homeless, but in a day and age when people seem to be solely overqualified or underqualified, and unless you're an H1B nobody's going to help you become qualified (they're too busy helping H1B's), what's left? With luck I'll find the solution. I checked up on the military and a pre-existing condition disqualifies me. But there are many ways to be patriotic. What can I do to learn and grow?

I'll learn and grow by recognizing that some people want to manipulate me into thinking whats wrong. Into believing whats wrong. That propoganda is indeed a weapon. A weapon against a once free country. A weapon against a once unafraid people. To scare them. To make them think things tactically advantageous. To believe in doubting your government, in such a way as to be cynical. And bitter. And ugly! And pornographic.

In my country we presume innocence. And Bush is innocent until proven guilty.

Is anyone as mad as me? What the hell is Bush doing still in office?

Iraq has been his biggest blunder. He has illegally, immorally and unilaterally invaded a country that originally had no ties to terrorism. Now, yes, there are many terrorism threats as Iraq is an international terrorist congregation point.

I served in Iraq and spoke with hundreds of US and "Coalition" military members. I guarantee you there was no one who agreed with our/their presence in Iraq.

When was the last time you heard the media refer to "the Coalition?"

Who are the terrorists in Iraq? What the hell has Bush gotten us into? Where's the plan to get out of this quagmire?

Is there a poll of parents of the dead, injured or missing as to their support for this war?

If the American media continues its campaign, Bush might even match Jimmy Carter's 25% in '79. Yes, stick a fork in this country, its done. Between PC and the armchair wimp Generals, we don't deserve to be the last remaining superpower. We are complacent and ignorant, a pretty dangerous mix. Six years after they took out the free world's center of commerce, the useful idiots, vocal majority as they have always been, rewrite history and suddenly we are to blame and if we just stop being mean, the muslims will once again love us. Get real. Read a history book. Pick up the Koran... Their manual is right there for everyone to see. They hate us because we are not Muslim and their job is to ensure we bow to Allah and Mohammed.
