Rome's Air Is Intoxicating

Researchers Find Traces Of Cocaine, Cannabis, Nicotine And Caffeine In The Air

(AP)  Researchers may have figured out what makes la vita so dolce in Rome.

A report from Italy's National Research Council released Thursday found that there are traces of cocaine and cannabis in the air of the Eternal City.

The institute made the discovery during a study of toxic substances in the air of Rome, Taranto, in the heel of boot-shaped Italy, as well as in Algiers. The results found that in Rome, there were traces of cocaine and cannabis — as well as nicotine, caffeine and benzopirene, which is commonly released in cigarette smoke and auto emissions.

"The highest concentrations of cocaine were found in the center of Rome, and especially in the area of the University of La Sapienza," said Dr. Angelo Cecinato, who led the investigation.

Researchers can't say for sure why the high concentrations were registered in those locations, but Cecinato stressed that the findings didn't necessarily mean that cocaine and cannabis are more heavily used there.

The report said the maximum concentration of cocaine in Rome — 0.1 nanograms per cubic meter — was five times less than the legal limit for toxic substances in the air. Nevertheless, researchers said even the small amount was reason for concern.

There were small traces of the drugs found in Taranto and none in Algiers, the researchers said.

Compassion needs good Gate Keepers, many abuse those of us who are compassionate. I have compassion for the compassionate, for example I have compassion for Americans who want to allow the 12 million illegal Mexicans to stay in the U.S., their heart is in the right place, but I feel their compassion is misplaced and being taken advantage of. Someone has to look out for the compassionate! I remember driving in town one day years ago, I saw a homeless man laying on a manhole with steam coming out keeping warm. I pulled my car over, gave him a few dollars and he went in his pocket and pulled out a roll of money, looked like he had more money than I did, and wrapped the dollars I gave him around his roll of money. I was so angry, people still tease me about that, but then I thought this is a rare case, most people are really doing bad, but you have to be careful not to be taken for a ride! Many of these teens reject order, authority, structure, rules and technology and rebel against it. Most of these teens respond to help if given and most just want to use the resources given to them to buy more drugs and live the life they have choosen for themselves. Compassion is a tricky business, you have to keep your wits about you!

I could be wrong ... but ... I think most runaway teens are typically running AWAY from abuse (i.e., physical, sexual, or mental) not TO abuse (i.e., drugs).

But, hey, feel free to continue to lump them in with the homeless and anyone else about whom you apparently have little compassion.

Homeless young people are commonly involved in one or more of the following activities that place them at risk for HIV infection--unprotected sexual intercourse, needle-sharing in the use of injectable drugs, *** with someone who injects drugs. The Teen Peer Outreach-Street Work Project trains teen peer educators to work in three existing San Diego youth service programs with street outreach staff members to provide HIV prevention education and referral services to San Diego's homeless youth. Selected teens from the target population also participate in street-based case management that provides skill development to bring about behavioral and attitudinal changes. An HIV outreach program cannot stand alone and is most successful if it is integrated with services that meet the basic needs of its clients...

I think this news just solved the U.S. problem with all the homeless and runaway teens living on the streets! I know where they will be heading now, they all crave a free high!
