Rare Rhino Dies At San Diego Zoo

A rare northern white rhinoceros died Wednesday at the San Diego Zoo, dwindling the critically endangered species' population to as few as 13 worldwide, zoo officials said.

Nadi was one of three northern white rhinos at the zoo's Wild Animal Park. No cause of death was given, but the female rhino had shown signs of old age, the zoo said in a statement.

Nadi, believed to be more than 40 years old, was brought from Africa in 1972 and was part of a group maintained at the Dv Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic.

She and another female rhino named Nola came to the Wild Animal Park in San Diego in 1989 as part of an effort to breed the species.

Although both females were late in life, zoo officials had hoped the presence of a male rhino and the large park habitat would help breeding. No calves were produced.

Northern white rhinos are considered critically endangered. Along with the two remaining at the Wild Animal Park, there are six at a zoo in the Czech Republic and as few as five believed to be roaming in the African wild, the zoo said.

It is written, "money is the root of all evil". If humans aren't poaching wild animals, they are poaching each other with jeolousy, envying, greed, and hate with Murder.

You are not far off. I too believe we need to stop the hatred on earth and start thinking about how easy things are compared to just 50 years ago when it comes to technology, race relations (still needs a lot of work) and other things. BUT NOOOOOOO..there are some that think its cool to send people to war over WHAT??? OIL RIGHTS????

I knew they were endangered,but not this bad. If they eventually go exstinct,it will be a sad day as these beast have lived for millions of years and due to humans poaching,we will be killing off another species,never to see another one like it in our life time.

We keep discovering new species on land and sea,but yet we keep on destroying mother nature.
I've often wondered what it would be like to come back to this place we call earth in say 1000 years from now.

Will it be like what we see on tv now,everyone for himself and ruled by guns for survival,with little water to spare for our survival. We got the space shuttle from Buck Rogers and so many other things have come from the past.

I can see it just now where we will be living and policed by a so called goverment,like in Judge Dred. It will literally not be safe for anyone to venture outside for fear of their lives. Work will even be harder to find. If someone wants what you got they will just take whether it's your woman or money or food.

Ok so I got a bit carried away,but face facts if we don't start saving us and the other species on this planet,it could very well happen the way I just described it.
