(AP) Lindsay Lohan was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Saturday after her convertible struck a curb, and investigators found what they believe is cocaine at the scene, police said.
Lohan, 20, and two other people were in her 2005 Mercedes SL-65 when it crashed on Sunset Boulevard around 5:30 a.m., Sgt. Mike Foxen said. It appeared the actress was speeding, Lt. Mitch McCann said at an afternoon news conference.
Officers at the scene found a "usable amount" of a drug tentatively identified as cocaine, McCann said. He declined to say where the drug was found other than to say Lohan was not carrying it.
Lohan, who spent time at a rehabilitation center earlier this year, was driven in another car to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, McCann said. The two other people in her car were not hurt.Photos: Celebrity Mug Shots
Officers received a 911 call about the accident and arrested Lohan at the hospital for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, McCann said.
She was released from custody because she was admitted to the hospital, police said.Photos: The Scene Of Lindsay's Crash
McCann declined to comment on Lohan's blood-alcohol level. He said the case will be presented to the District Attorney's Office where the actress could face more charges, including felonies. Her tentative arraignment date is Aug. 24.Photos: A Year of Lohan
The crash was Lohan's third accident in about two years. In October 2005, Lohan and a passenger received minor injuries when her convertible hit a van in West Hollywood. Authorities said the van driver, who also received minor injuries, was at fault.
Months earlier, Lohan collided with a minivan when she made a U-turn as the van, carrying paparazzi, followed her from a Los Angeles restaurant. A photographer was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon but prosecutors declined to charge him.
That crash was credited with prompting Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign a law that set steep financial penalties for paparazzi who commit assaults while trying to obtain celebrity photos.Photos: Livin' La Vida Lohan
Lohan publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik did not immediately return an e-mail requesting comment.
The actresses father, Michael Lohan, gave an exclusive statement to
http://www.X17online.com regarding the charge against his daughter.
The statement reads, in part:
"Lindsay needs to find God, get better, clean house and start all over again with the people who were there with her at the beginning: her family. Too many people are around Lindsay for the wrong reasons. They want to see what they can get from her instead of caring about Lindsay herself. I'm her father. I don't want anything from her but her love and to be her father first. I'm here for Lindsay as a father and a father only."Lohan said in January that she had checked into a rehabilitation center for substance abuse treatment. Her publicist confirmed in December that the actress was attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
Lohan told Allure magazine during an interview for its May issue that she decided to enter the secluded Wonderland Center at the suggestion of her therapist.
"It's so weird that I went to rehab. I always said I would die before I went to rehab," Lohan told the publication.
Lohan's latest movie, "Georgia Rule," is in theaters now. The actress' other screen credits include "Mean Girls," "Bobby," "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Freaky Friday."

Now you're in the public comment zone. What follows is not CBS News stuff; it comes from other people and we don't vouch for it. A reminder: By using this Web site you agree to accept our Terms of Service. Click here to read the Rules of Engagement.
I agree with erasmus6. Just exactly what news do you believe? Most of the commentors here are believing the facts that CBS has posted on this story. Thats all. We are not jealous, mean, misunderstaning her or anthing like that. Just using the facts in this and numerous others stories to base our comments on.
And to comment on your statement "that this woman, who was an accomplished actress at a very young age, has been hounded by extremely aggressive paparazzi and the unconscionable tabloids for her entire life -- their sole mission to expose her slightest misstep to the world." If she would like to shed this bad girl persona that the tabloid paparazzi (according to you) seemed to create for her she could start by:
1. Not going to clubs and being photographed since she is under age anyway. Its against the law to drink underage. The paparazzi didn't take her there.
2. Don't hang out with people who take drugs if you do not. The paparazzi didn't give her friends the drugs.
3. Don't drink and drive. You are underage its against the law. The paparazzi didn't give her the alcohol.
4. If you are doing something that you don't want others to see, quit doing it in front of photographers.
What do you consider the truth?
We have read that she was doing drugs and drinking.
We have read that she was in rehab.
We have read that she was back partying.
We have read that she was now in an accident and cocaine was in the car.
I did not read all this from a sleazy tabloid magazine. It was from a legitimate news site.
What does it take for you to consider it to be truth? I think that somebody could hit you in the head with the truth and you still wouldn't see it.
Also, she wasn't in desparate need of medical attention, yet she chose to leave the scene of the accident. WHY? It is against the law. Also it is a well known fact that if you go to the hospital the police can't test you for anything. Don't you find that a little convenient?
She also has a problem with work ethics and I didn't just hear that from the media, it came from Jane Fonda's mouth as well.
If the girl can't take the stress of her job and the media hounding her then she needs to get out of the business, because we all know it isn't going to end. I can feel sorry for someone like her but only to a certain point. When you can't get your **** together then you need to call it quits.
We know precious little about her that isn't embellished in doctored photos, shrouded in prurient innuendo and whispered in purposeful slander. This latest article is sadly lacking in any real news -- the only established facts being that the car she was driving hit a curb, and a "usable amount" of cocaine (no idea what that means, since any amount is "usable") was found by police in the vicinity of the car.
Comments posted on this board reveal that many people harbor an animosity toward this young woman completely beyond the facts of this story and devoid of any real knowledge of her life. She has become a lightning rod for vitriol harbored against the rich and famous, a poster child for the frustrated and envious masses -- and I find this both disturbing and sad.
I certainly don't condone idolizing movie stars or permitting them to shirk the law -- Ms. Logan should face the consequences for her actions, whatever they prove to be. But fairness also demands that we base our judgment on truth, not myth, and treat her as a human being, not some target for our own personal dissatisfaction.

Beware the preacher who calls himself a saint.

When I saw the above comment, I had to laugh - this story is on CBS, an actual NEWS site after all - not in a tabloid or on Perez Hilton's gossip site.
These poor little rich girls with no class, no taste and very little talent for anything other than getting themselves in the news do stuff like this and automatically get a "Get out of jail free" card - didn't the story say her arraignment date is around August 24th (3 months after the fact)? Does anyone out there really think that she will be treated any more harshly than, say, *** little Paris Hilton? The judge will probably say, "Oh honey, we'll overlook it this time, but if you do it again, we'll have to give you some jail time" (which will be waived for "good behavior" before she even gets to the jail house doors) There is a different justice system in Hollywood than in the rest of the country. If it was me here in Ohio, I would still be in jail today, with no hope of release/bail until tomorrow at the least.
Oh, and by the way - partybuddy Mom and Dad (dear, dear Dad) helped create this monster. They need slapped upside the head too.
