(AP)  Three retired generals challenged a dozen members of Congress in a new ad campaign Wednesday, saying the politicians can't expect to win re-election if they support President Bush's policies in Iraq.

“I am outraged, as are the majority of Americans. I'm a lifelong Republican, but it's past time for change,” retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste told reporters.

“Our strategy in Iraq today is more of the same, a slow grind to nowhere which totally ignores the reality of Iraq and the lessons of history,” Batiste said. “Our president ignores sound military advice and surrounds himself with like-minded and compliant subordinates.”

Batiste and Paul Eaton, also a retired major general, are featured in the ads by VoteVets.org. They challenge the president's argument that he listens to his commanders on the ground in Iraq and say the president's Iraq policies endanger U.S. security.

“The fact is, the president has never listened to the soldiers on the ground effectively,” said retired NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark, who ran for president in 2004. “This administration is not listening to the troops and is not supporting them.”

Other veterans promoted the campaign at a news conference in Manchester, the start of a six-state publicity tour targeting Republican Sens. John Sununu of New Hampshire, Susan Collins of Maine, Norm Coleman of Minnesota and John Warner of Virginia, plus nine House members.

Many in the group, including Sununu, have criticized various aspects of administration policy, but all have opposed legislation to establish a timetable for withdrawing American troops.

“Telling members of al Qaeda, militias or insurgent groups the date we will begin and end troop withdrawals is irresponsible,” Sununu said.

Separately in Manchester, about a dozen peace activists staged a sit-in at Sununu's office to oppose the war. They read the names of 22 New Hampshire troops who died in Iraq. They also stood around a pile of shoes. Attached to each pair was the name of an Iraqi killed in the conflict. Outside, about 30 protesters waved signs.

When VoteVets.org ran ads in February, Sununu said critics of the war have every right to speak out, “but no group or individual should claim to speak for all the patriotic Americans serving in Iraq and around the world in our armed forces.”

The House members targeted by the new ads are Mary Bono of California, Phil English of Pennsylvania, Randy Kuhl and James Walsh of New York, Jo Ann Emerson of Missouri, Timothy Johnson of Illinois, Mike Rogers and Fred Upton of Michigan and Michael Castle of Delaware.

English's spokeswoman, Julia Wanzco, fired back.

“The congressman has long stated that he is for a political settlement not a surge, and at the end of the day, these ads are more about cheap Democratic political stunts than about solving the actual problem,” she said.

Not one penny more until Bush comes to the bargaining table.

People are upset about the Iraqi Parliament taking two months off? What about Condoleeza Rice and our diplomatic corps? Two days in Sharm El Sheik with naught but a 'hello' here and there, then two months back in Washington doing nothing. If Bush was really supporting the troops, there would be a surge in diplomacy as well.

We may not like to admit such things but he has the EXACT same mentality of Hitler. He will simply purge those who won't tell him what he wants to hear and just goes on extending our Military. What's it going to take?
The only reason the US invaded Iraq was to get some good old boys richer. Even generals are in our faces about Cheney and Bu$h. But America sleeps...

BAE Systems Inc., an American subsidiary of the British defense conglomerate BAE Systems PLC, will pay $88 per share for Armor Holdings, based in Jacksonville, Fla. That represents a 7 percent premium over the closing price of company shares Friday. Including $388 million in debt, the deal is worth $4.5 billion.
Shares of Armor Holdings rose $4.45, more than 5 percent, to $86.60 in Monday trading after the takeover was announced.
The deal expands BAE's presence in the potentially lucrative market for armored Humvees, personnel carriers and other military equipment that can withstand repeated roadside bombings and insurgent attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan."

This could easily go on for years.

It's fantastic news that these Generals are coming forward to give the lie to Bush's claim that he always listens to the suggestions of the Generals on the ground. Now we have it from the Generals themselves that Bush is a liar. How much more proof do we need before we throw this murdering bas***** out of office and into prison! Impeachment should only be the first step. We shouldn't stop until Bush AND Cheney are playing drop the soap in a prison shower with other mass murderers like them.

The time has come for Real Republican's to stand up here. There must be something done here because we already know in our hearts that what these Generals are telling us is true. Our Troops are extended to the breaking point with 3 or 4 tours in Combat and we already know the price of this insanity is going to harm our kids for generations to come. This is a very uncertain world we live in but one thing is certain, we must live in it. We can not take the southern attitude of living in this world and we can not act like Bush has done. And you can actually say that with a straight face! Lars says it's the media that is against this war, not the American people. The media lead the "sheeple" to conclude that the war is not in our best interest. But bright, intelligent folks like him recognize that Iraq, with no WMD's and no ties to 9-11, is a threat to our national security. Another bit of neocon "spin". The war in Iraq has nothing to do with the war on terrorism of for American freedoms. That war is being fought in Afghanistan where their Taliban govt protected the Al Qaeda forces which did attack our country on 9/11 when George W Bush was asleep at the wheel.

Like me, I urge you to contact your Senators and Representatives to let them know just how bad you feel this Iraq war of illegal aggression is. We can see that even the Republicans are now getting the message.

These Generals are good men who have been betrayed by an evil man in the White House. Do not let them stand alone. Stick up for America and let Congress know just how bad this war stinks.

Bush refuses any measure which states the obvious - that we will not prevail in Iraq. His mindset appears to be "if we just refuse to admit we're losing, then we're not losing".

He is hoping against hope, and history, that some miraculous event will keep him from being tagged a moron by history for this boondoggle.

As in Afghanistan, where legislators have passed a measure calling for negotiations with the Taleban after 5 1/2 years of being unable to stop their recruitment and assaults, so will go Iraq.

And Bush will be tagged with trying to conquer both countries with defective strategies and wasting a ridiculous amount of American warriors and treasure in the process.

Merriam-Webster defines "boondoggle" as: a wasteful or impractical project or activity often involving graft.

There is no better term to describe Bush's invasion/occupation of Iraq, and history will view it so regardless of Bush's stubborn resistance to that fact.
