"Sunday Morning" Wins James Beard Award

CBS News Sunday Morning won a James Beard Broadcast Media Award for television for three stories, all reported by Sunday Morning correspondent Martha Teichner.

The award is given by the James Beard Foundation, a non-profit organization located in New York and dedicated to America's culinary culture. It holds workshops to show off the art of great chefs and winemakers and also offers scholarships for aspiring culinary professionals. It also holds conferences and classes.

Teichner won for her reports on the annual competition for the picture-perfect turkey photograph to grace the cover of Gourmet Magazine's Thanksgiving issue, the history and importance of honeybees, and a London chef famous for "nose to tail" eating, in which he cooks the "offal" bits of an animal. Teichner's pieces were submitted in the food segment, national or local category.

"I believe food stories are about so much more than the obsessions of self-indulgent foodies," Teichner said. "They can be rich and important and can touch on the essence of Life itself. They are always fascinating and fun to do, and winning a Beard Award means celebrating with a great dinner."

The Gourmet segment was produced by Judith Hole and edited by Jason Schmidt. The honeybees story was produced by Catherine Kim and edited by Robin Skeete. Kim also produced the London chef story, which was edited by Remington Korper.

The judges for the print and media journalism awards include journalism professors, veteran journalists and editors. More than 550 submissions were received for consideration.
