A closer look at Vice President Dick Cheney's career and his much-publicized health problems.

(CBS/AP)  Vice President Dick Cheney pressed Iraq's leaders to do more to reduce violence and achieve political reconciliation Wednesday in a visit punctuated by an explosion that shook windows at the U.S. Embassy where Cheney was visiting.

Cheney acknowledged the country still has serious security problems. Iraqi leaders "believe we are making progress, but we've got a long way to go," he said.

The vice president urged that Iraq's parliament abandon plans for a two-month summer vacation while U.S. forces are fighting. With important issues pending, including how to share Iraq's oil wealth, "any undue delay would be difficult to explain," Cheney said.

As Democrats clamor for an end to the four-year-old war and President Bush sags in the polls, the White House is under intense political pressure to show that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government is making progress.

White House counselor Dan Bartlett said in Washington that Cheney's trip "gives an opportunity at a very high level for this message to be delivered."

Eight days after Bush vetoed a bill setting deadlines for U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq, the White House also served notice that Bush would veto a follow-up bill drafted by House Democratic leaders that would pay for the Iraq war only into summer. At the same time, Defense Secretary Robert Gates held out hope that troops can begin withdrawing if the Iraqi government makes progress by fall.

Supporters of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr rallied in Baghdad and Shiite areas to the south to protest the Cheney visit and demand the withdrawal of American forces. Protesters in Baghdad and the holy city of Najaf chanted "No to the occupation" and "No to America."

In other developments:

  • A suicide truck bomb ripped through the Interior Ministry in the relatively peaceful Kurdish city of Irbil on Wednesday, killing 14 people and wounding dozens, officials said. Kurdish officials blamed al Qaeda-linked insurgents for the first major attack in the regional capital in more than three years.

  • Four Iraqi journalists were killed Wednesday in a drive-by shooting near the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, police said. The four worked for the independent Raad media company, which publishes several weekly newspapers and monthly magazines that are generally pro-government and deal with politics, education and arts.

  • Police found four decapitated heads in the Sabtiyah area north of Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, health officials said Wednesday. The body of a security officer was also found shot in the head and chest in Diwaniyah, 80 miles south of Baghdad, police said.

  • The White House said President Bush would veto any bill drafted by House Democratic leaders that would fund the Iraq war only into the summer months.

  • Some former top Iraq war commanders are taking the highly unusual step of appearing in TV ads that take on the president's policy, CBS News' Peter Maer reports. Retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste, a self-described lifelong Republican, said the U.S. is on a "slow grind to nowhere in an Iraq mired in civil war."

  • A new report by the group Save the Children says Iraq's child mortality rate is up 150 percent since 1990. Mark Strassmann reports that thousands of Baghdad's children live on the streets, with little to protect them from the daily violence.

The big question is: Will Cheney go shopping, a la McCain, in order to demonstrate to us how safe Iraq really is?

It's a real shame his arrival wasn't announced in advance. Like a day or two early. On Al-Jazeera. Including his arrival time and a detailed map of his route into the city from the airport. With map quest printouts available to anyone who wanted one...city, nation and region wide.

If I were an Iraqi Parliamentarian I would take a six year vacation.

Cheney is going there for show. He hopes his presence will salvage something for the republican party? Maybe the foil wrappers.

He wouldn't go there unless something big was coming. Expect a large troop buildup say forty thousand more troops by year end to 200,000 ready to invade Russia.

Othman said authorities learned that insurgents were planning a large attack a week ago when police arrested a militant cell in the town of Sulamaniya.

"During questioning they confessed that were getting training lessons in a neighboring country and that was Iran," he said.

A week ago Iraqi authorities knew of plans for a major attack? Did they alert US authortities? Did they heighten security?Who has corroborated the statement that they received their training in Iran? Who questioned them besides Iraqi police? Who is providing the training in Iran? Is it sponsored by the government?

"Vice President Dawg Cheney landed in Baghdad Wednesday morning for an unannounced visit to push Iraq's warring political and religious factions to seek common ground..."

Why unannounced ? It's really quite safe there, Dawg. John McCain recently strolled through the bazaar and bought a rug from a rug merchant, without mussing a hair on his bald head.

"For the Iraqi parliament to take a two-month vacation in the middle of summer is impossible to understand," said Crocker, who traveled with Cheney from Washington.

May ain't the middle of summer. And I undertand it perfectly well, Crocker. Why shouldn't they take their time ? They have no timetable to adhere to, no deadline to meet. Unpleasant work expands to fill the time available for its completion, especially in hot weather, and your bosses have given them all the time in the world.

    What's not to understand ?

According to Greek fable, an ape once reached into a pitcher through the narrow neck, and grabbed a bunch of nuts. He then could not withdraw his hand from the pitcher, as he refused to relax the fist that had grabbed the nuts, for fear of losing them.

That's Bush & Co. in Iraq.

Military victory there is a mirage. It's not going to happen. It was never going to happen.

So the war goes stupidly on.

Posted by mocaleo at 08:09 AM : May 09, 2007

First of all, Bush would end up in a non-moving pile on the floor. (That's what happens when the puppet master's strings are cut.)

Secondly, the war won't end until January 2009. Bush is using his faith to run the office of the President - not common sense. All he's trying to do now is string this mess out and leave it for the next guy. Then if it ends in defeat, he can say, "It was all going along great until I left office." If we win he'll say, "It's all because of my superior leadership that I was able to set us up for a victory." If it ends before he leaves office it's all on him.

These people LIVE there Ricky, it's their HOME and the War has been so badly managed it's just not possible to ever see an ALLY in Iraq, at least not in the near future. Real cute.

Guess that's what our society has turned into.

Radical Islam has the American public completely fooled, just as they wanted to accomplish.

    Thanks for the insults.

Look Ricky the proof is right there in front of you. When Bush 1 had success in the Middle East how did he do it? Your fuhrer and that's how the REAL world out there view you people, like it or not, can't unite this nation and has allowed our ability to move the Free World and a united front against these people. He humiliated our Allies, LIED to us, LIED to the UN about the Inspectors and now has us neck deep in a War without end. These people LIVE there Ricky, it's their HOME and the War has been so badly managed it's just not possible to ever see an ALLY in Iraq, at least not in the near future. It was a stupid policy but worse it was plain southern FASCISM, chest pounding SOUTHERN FASCISM that has us up to our necks in this mess. God help us if NATO walks out on us in Afganistan! Sieg Heil Y'all.
