Virginia Tech Tragedy
Deadly shooting rampage on Virginia Tech campus leaves 33 dead.
Jonquel Brooks, 19, was taken into custody after a series of intense phone negotiations with police, his parents and an attorney, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
Police said the shooting across a street from Fresno State University's stadium broke out during a confrontation with four men over a PlayStation game console late Monday.
Brooks, who was majoring in criminology at Fresno State, was arrested after police and federal agents launched a manhunt for him. Investigators initially believed he was still inside the apartment complex where the shooting occurred, but then expanded the search to other parts of Fresno.
"The suspect had altered his appearance significantly," Dyer said. "He shaved his head and also changed his clothing apparently in an attempt to avoid being recognized."
The Fresno County Coroner's Office identified the deceased victim as a Brant Daniels, 19, who had moved from the Los Angeles area to attend Fresno State but was not a current student.
Police identified the two wounded men as Fresno State student Roderick Buycks, 19, and Drew Pfeiff, 22, who is not enrolled at the university.
"The guy who shot us — he had stolen from our apartment. We went to confront him with the evidence and it just turned ugly from there. He pulled a gun out on us," said Pfeiff. Brooks fired five or six times, grazing Pfeiff, he said.
"People don't deserve to die for stupid stuff like this," Pfeiff said.
Fresno State freshman Meosha Chase, 19, said she was Brooks' ex-girlfriend and described him as a "fine, normal, goofy, silly" teen who wanted to be a parole officer.
Residents of the apartment complex were evacuated to the campus cafeteria. The campus, which has about 20,000 students, remained open, said Tom Uribe, a university spokesman.
"We were assured by the police that the campus was safe, and we're waiting to hear more," he said.
Fresno State students were never in danger because police were in contact with the gunman and knew he was not on campus, Dyer said.
Police were searching for evidence, including the gun, at six apartments at University Village Apartments.
"This is not another Virginia Tech," police spokesman Jeff Cardinale said, in reference to last month's university shooting in which 33 people died, including the gunman. "This is simply a dispute between one person and a group of individuals."

See all 87 CommentsThe more people that have guns the higher the chance of gun abuse which in turn begets these violent activities. Please use your energy to reduce the number of guns in the public sector.
Iraq has God in their homes and schools and that seems to be a major reason for violence.
Self defense is the most basic of human rights!

The police are not required to protect you or anyone else and if something major happens, law enforcement will be concerned with THEMSELVES.
That's why it is called SELF DEFENSE - only you can defend yourself.
In America it is your right(and duty) to be your own bodyguard.
What about the gun control law that says you have to be 21 to buy a gun? Obviously this guy did not get it legally so your gun control law solution has has already failed!
Its not the NRA's fault, or your fault, or mine...its the jackazz that did it. It happens...get over it. 'Tis a very imperfect world we live in...accept it.
Why not run national stories about these people (all from the last few days):

Is it any wonder ignorant people are against guns when all they see are stories about criminals using them????
I fully expect that in real life people like you act the same way, and regretfully it is necessary for the populace to have the means to defend against bullies. Don%u2019t come to Texas, about 300,000 people have the means to deal with you when you get violent.

Excellent, sevenveils. I usually agree with your posts, and this one in particular.
God is an imaginary friend for grownups.

Well said, K. I could not agree more.
I'm not normally a grammar nazi, but SHEESH dude you have serious gall calling somebody else "dumb."
Did you ever consider, though: Could it possibly be that the incidences of guns being used in crimes so drastically outweigh the instances in which they prevent a crime that those stories just get overwhelmed? Maybe guns really DO harm a lot more than they help. After all, they are made to kill, basically.
I'm sure they HIGHLY outweigh the "good" instances where guns are used to protect. Which further lends to the point, criminals will have guns, whether they get them legally or not. Its not the family guy with a gun cabinet full of hunting rifles you gotta worry about (a majority of the time anyway...I wouldn't recommend breaking into his house).
There are about 8,000 homicides from guns, excluding suicides. This includes all police shootings AND all self-defense homicides.
Most (about 65 percent) non-suicide homicides are criminals killing criminals, so there are really only about 2800 *honest* homicides, again including all police shootings AND all self-defense homicides.
An FBI study (Jounal of Criminal Law and Criminology) in 1995 found that private citizens used guns about 2,500,000 million time each year, or about 5000 times a day, to defend themselves. The vast majority of the 5000 don%u2019t result in a shot being fired, as criminals decide to be somewhere else.
You always end up leaving once forced to face facts, so you can leave now.

As far as the weapon, this student was majoring in criminology, perhaps going into law enforcement, his parents or maybe a relative might of purchase this weapon, seeing how he is under age.
Which one sounds more *representative* of the people? I will take *NRA* for $2000 Alex. Gun manufacturing is a best about a two billion dollar business, compared to say the 142 billion dollar fast food business.
How is it that a two billion dollar industry *owns* our goverment, yet is about .0003% of the economy? Maybe because the majority of the people are not as dumb as gun control nuts? Could it be????
Bogus argument! It has been proven time and again that if guns are outlawed only the criminals will have them. Get a grip. If you want to live that kind of a fantasy life go ahead. For me I will honor the Lord and keep my handgun loaded.
Thats what a radical group does with God. You cannot judge the rest of the God fearing people in the world by those lunatics standards.
Because the MSM does not want those stories to be told. It wouldn't do any good for their anti handgun agenda. And yes you are right they are basically made to kill, only as a last resort should that option be used. Responsible gun owners know, teach and use that option.
1. they acted like small children
2the parents failed in their duties in bringing them up properly
3 their parents allowed them to run wild at home so the parents will know ask WHY
4 as they were growing up were taught no social skills
5 the parents were rasised the same by their parents
6 you don't take a gun or thing to attack them.
No item is worth dying over. As an older person I don't understand the fight over a game console. We didn't fight over what is not ours. When we were children and we'd fight over a toy, our parents would put a stop to it and take the item away until we learnt not to fight over iy. It worked. I am 52.
As bad as what he did is, as a police officer he would be doing this and worse with a badge and police union standing squarly behind him.
In fact I am shocked that the *back the blue* nuts are not on here telling us how this is just an *error* that any Crim J major could make.
Whatever dude. Go around wishing death violence on the people you don't agree with and then claim you are the *nice person*. Nice to see inmates have internet access nowdays.
