Deadly shooting rampage on Virginia Tech campus leaves 33 dead.

(AP)  Police arrested a college student Tuesday suspected of opening fire at an apartment during a dispute over a video game console, killing one man and wounding two others.

Jonquel Brooks, 19, was taken into custody after a series of intense phone negotiations with police, his parents and an attorney, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

Police said the shooting across a street from Fresno State University's stadium broke out during a confrontation with four men over a PlayStation game console late Monday.

Brooks, who was majoring in criminology at Fresno State, was arrested after police and federal agents launched a manhunt for him. Investigators initially believed he was still inside the apartment complex where the shooting occurred, but then expanded the search to other parts of Fresno.

"The suspect had altered his appearance significantly," Dyer said. "He shaved his head and also changed his clothing apparently in an attempt to avoid being recognized."

The Fresno County Coroner's Office identified the deceased victim as a Brant Daniels, 19, who had moved from the Los Angeles area to attend Fresno State but was not a current student.

Police identified the two wounded men as Fresno State student Roderick Buycks, 19, and Drew Pfeiff, 22, who is not enrolled at the university.

"The guy who shot us — he had stolen from our apartment. We went to confront him with the evidence and it just turned ugly from there. He pulled a gun out on us," said Pfeiff. Brooks fired five or six times, grazing Pfeiff, he said.

"People don't deserve to die for stupid stuff like this," Pfeiff said.

Fresno State freshman Meosha Chase, 19, said she was Brooks' ex-girlfriend and described him as a "fine, normal, goofy, silly" teen who wanted to be a parole officer.

Residents of the apartment complex were evacuated to the campus cafeteria. The campus, which has about 20,000 students, remained open, said Tom Uribe, a university spokesman.

"We were assured by the police that the campus was safe, and we're waiting to hear more," he said.

Fresno State students were never in danger because police were in contact with the gunman and knew he was not on campus, Dyer said.

Police were searching for evidence, including the gun, at six apartments at University Village Apartments.

"This is not another Virginia Tech," police spokesman Jeff Cardinale said, in reference to last month's university shooting in which 33 people died, including the gunman. "This is simply a dispute between one person and a group of individuals."

It saddens me to see so many people making judgement and offering their uneducated opinions on the situation that occured Late Monday night. There are 2 sides to every story and everyone is persumed innocent until proven guilty.

If people would just stop and apply common sense then they would know that this one-sided story they are hearing is filled with reasonable doubt.

First of all one of the young men that went over to Brooks apartment stated that 4 of them went over there to talk to Brooks peacefully. Who goes over and makes an announced visit to someones home late night with 4 other young men to have a peaceful conversation with one young men that they have been having an issue with. He didn't mention the fact that it was after 11 pm and Brooks was not expecting them or the fact that they came up in "Brooks home" and assaulted him. Brooks didn't go looking for trouble, "trouble" came looking for him in his own home and as any other reasonable person would do he defended himself.

It is unfortunate that someone had to die and my heart goes out to his family but in my opinion the inormation that has been given out so far (which you can only believe a percentage of) mixed in with the common sense of a average men leads me to think that this is a case og self defense.

The Duke Lacrosse case should have taught us not to presume guilt before the facts are in. We do not know what happened. The alleged perp was confronted by 5 or 6 guys. What does "confronted" mean. Did they go to talk with baseball bats.

Stay cool people and remember that this guy is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Oh well, this is what we will get on occasion when fine, normal people have guns. Better get used to it, seems to be a growing trend, this shooting of people one has a problem with. I'd say something about how ridiculously easy it is to buy a gun, but I'm sure that'd spark "Remember the Second Amendment!" outrage on the comments board here. So I guess all I can say is, too bad for those killed, see you on the comments boards when the next shooting happens.

THIS IS FUN!

MORE GUNS FOR THE GUN NUTS! LOL

We want to see how long it will take Americans to get the message to MINIMIZE THE NUMBER OF GUNS IN A POPULATION THAT HAS SO MANY NUT CASES! LOL

They should have taken Mr. Jonquel Brooks "out" instead of aresting him. That would have been doing SOCIETY a big favor. At 19, if he doesn't think it's wrong to shoot someone (for ANY reason) then he is NOT re-habilitate-able.

Those who resort to using profanities, display to all, their complete lack of intellect, and the weakness of any argument they put.

"But the death rate per capita has no basis in this argument. The rate at which home invasions climbed after their strick gun control laws were passed does. If a criminal knows you are defenceless then you will become a victom, if the criminal has to wonder whether I have a Gun in my belt he may think twice, and if he does not? to bad for them."

You are correct in part only there, but that is all.

Since the introduction of our stricter gun control laws, not gun ban laws, as some people in your country mistakenly believe, our gun related death rate has fallen dramatically, that is an indisputable fact.

Yesterday at our Latrobe university in Melobourne, we had in a crowded canteen, one student stab another with a knife, the stabbed student though in a serious condition is still alive, though a hypothetical question, if the perpertrator had been armed with a gun, is it not possible, that one at least, and maybe more would have died.

I also respect the fact that you do not lower yourself to profanities etc.

I have to go out for a while this morning, if you reply to this I shall attempt to catch up later, however that will be rather late in your neck of the woods.

Copy cat. It is the break down of the young. It is dumb to kill over what is not theirs. It is pupils of age who oaght know better. I don't think having stonger gun laws would stop a person bent on hurting/killing others. I have never played the visual games that are so unfit to play.
Those are the ones that warp the mind. If a person suffers from mental illness, those games glorise killing and the like are unfit for them to play .They play for hours. It must do some thing to the mind.

rheola,

I have to say at least you have the intelligence not to have to use profanity every other word.

"The gun related death rate in Australia is way below that of the U.S. on a per capita basis."

And plus you never had a valid argument for Florida and the other 30+ states!!!!!

Why are people always comparing GUN crime rates in the U.S. versus other countries? Wouldn't it be more accurate to compare TOTAL crime rates? I mean, in some countries MACHETES are being used very effectively as a weapon.
