Dispute Over Playing Of Women Priests Sidelines Interfaith Game At Religious Cooperation Conference

(AP)  A soccer game bringing Muslim imams and Christian priests "shoulder to shoulder" on a field in Norway was canceled Saturday because the teams could not agree on whether women priests should take part.

The game was to mark the end of a daylong "Shoulder to Shoulder" conference in Oslo that encouraged religious dialogue between the two faiths.

Church of Norway spokesman Olav Fykse Tveit said differences began when the imams refused to play against a mixed-gender team of priests because it would have gone against their religious beliefs in avoiding close physical contact with women.

"We found that out two days before, but because we thought it would be a nice conclusion of the conference we didn't want to call it off, so we decided to stage an all-mens team game instead," he said.

But when the church decided to drop its female players, the priest team captain walked out in protest.

Just hours before Saturday's scheduled game, the church released a statement saying it had called it off because it was sending the wrong signal.

"We realize now that it will be wrong to have a priest team without women... The reactions we have had today shows us that this is being interpreted as a gender-political issue. This is why we cannot go through with the soccer match."

Fykse Tveit said that, despite the differences on the field, "one very good lesson we've learned from this is that when we cooperate, we also enter each others boundaries, and that's a positive thing."

ToolMangler, I have much on the Quran and some of their other holy books and when they try to tell us that it is a religion of peace, they must only be reading the first quarter of the Quran which is indeed full of love, tolerance, etc but once Mohammad acquired enough numbers to become a force he became a force by their gods orders Mohammad said, which Mohammad obviously intended from the beginning..

I will be howled down for this but I believe that women men and women are equal but in their different ways. There is no doubt that women are more nurturing than men and men are more mechanical etc etc etc.., not with standing that they can both do any job that they want too but each do best at their gift..

Honestly, this is the first logical thing I've seen muslims request. I believe in this country there are
two kinds of feminists - those who insist that women are just as intelligent as men and deserve the same pay and the same rights. Then there are the women who think they're better than men, insist on unrealistic terms and make the whole thing harder for everyone. I think this incident with the soccer game is a prime example of unrealistic. It's been proven over and over that in general men are stronger physically than women, and those who chose to not accept it, male or female is being unrealistic.

Second, playing against women is against their religion. It would be like asking a Jew to eat pork or the priests to denounce Christ to play against women. We commonly give in to these people when it comes to important stuff, but we walk away when it comes to something legitimate. Can these priests really be that incredibly stupid, or are we not getting the story correctly?
