Ohio Cop Charged With DUI Won MADD Award

(AP)  A city police officer who recently received an award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving has been charged with drunken driving, authorities said.

Specialist Charles Beebe's SUV was pulled over Wednesday in Aurora, Ind., after a motorist reported that he had forced two vehicles off the road, the arresting officer's report said. Beebe failed a field sobriety test and agreed to a chemical test.

His blood-alcohol content was 0.08 percent, the point at which a motorist is considered legally drunk in Indiana, according to the arrest report.

Beebe, 54, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and was released on $1,500 bond.

The 32-year member of the Cincinnati Police Department received a Top Cop award this year from MADD's Southwestern Ohio chapter.

A Cincinnati police spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment.

Aurora is about 20 miles southwest of Cincinnati.

phoenix1218: Great! Wise discussion plus willingness to learn equals greater understanding. To simply put what I have posted in its lowest common denominator is: Suspend the offenders alcohol buying privilege for a season, not for the rest of his life..... Maybe that length of time should be governed by the points of the blood alcohol level. Example: "starting point" of offence level= 1 year suspension, plus 1 piont higher= 2 year suspension, etc..... Got to go now! Bye.

Yes, I know who Ben Franklin is & I don't have a problem reading. The cop busted for DUI SHOULD be punished more harshly then a regular person should as he is supposed to uphold the law, not break it. I don't own a SUV, or condemn people for owning 1 because the majority of people who are like you, having a family they want to protect on the road. Being someone who has been hit twice this year (the last accident totaling my small station wagon) I now drive a 2005 dodge caravan, a bigger car than I had previously owned. My car no longer says hit me please. I appreciate that you applaud my right to own & carry a weapon legally, I got my LTC the right way. I agree with you that our politicians are more focused on taking away our rights and THAT is what I am opposed to. I'm not opposed to protecting people by creating more laws in regards to drunk driving just don't do it at the expense of my freedoms, or yours. I really do like these forums to discuss things and have intelligent (well, mostly intelligent, have you SEEN some of the comments on these posts?) conversation with other adults. I don't know if this cop should be fired outright & i'll tell you why. When I took my gun safety class (to get my LTC) I learned that there was a cop who as a teen stole a hubcap & wasn't able to carry a weapon outside work. Maybe he should not be able to drive outside of work for a period of time & have all punishments a regular person would have.

phoenix1218......You have a serious reading comprehension problem. Do you even know who BENJAMIN FRANKLIN was and what he meant by saying that? We have the Highway Patrol for "what reason"? This cop with the DUI should get his public trusted canassticator kicked so hard he'll get a nose bleed from it.(Shock-wave from rearend to nose as cause) The right to purchase alcohol infringed upon is far less an un-constitutional infringment of the citizens right "to keep and bear arms", which I applaud you and all women for doing that. These politicians never seem to want to fix the things that need fixing, but rather focus on taking away our constitutional rights as a solution to the problem. I drive a 4x4 SUV for several reasons. One of them is if some drunk hits my truck with my family inside, their survival statistics increase greatly. Heck, I would drive a dang Sherman Tank down the road if I could afford to.

What did you expect a person to think when you said people needed more masters, your words. Take away rights of offenders of DUIs or take away your rights (you seem so free with your rights anyhow) but don't take away my rights.

Still feel good about your SUV?????
Posted by kindrox

I don't drive a SUV as I have already said.

And let me clarify a piece in something I posted earlier. I said "And yes, I drink & drive but not at the same time." Before someone jumps on me for that comment let me say what I meant is that I drink and I drive but what i do NOT do is drive after I have been drinking. I drink at home anyways, no worries there.

Who wants to have freedoms when it allows people to make mistakes? Posted by kindrox

Kindrox,
I cannot speak for everyone but I want my freedom even if it allows people to make mistakes. Mistakes are a part of life. Everyone makes them. My biggest was marrying a deadbeat guy who turned into a deadbeat dad. What is your mistake? Not only that, America was created based on a lack of religous freedom. Are you seriously saying that you don't want freedom of choice, religion...The freedom to do things that we have done everyday for our entire lives, you don't want to do these things anymore??? I feel sad for you. Do you seriously want to do exactly as you are told to do? That seems to me to be a lot like a communist country and I hope that is not where our beloved country is going.

Most people drive 60mph. on the average road & thats 120mph. in oncoming traffic...Don't want to lose your rights(driving privilege)? Do not be uncourteous to the rights of your fellow citizens on the road......THEN THEY ARE IN NEED OF MORE MASTERS...Look at it this way, if you sqrew up in a firearm infraction(BAD ATTITUDE), you can lose your right to vote. Posted by cfin5

cfin,
I don't care what someone has done (w/the exception of people on death row) they should not have their right to vote be taken away. And the comment you made about more masters is just plain scary. For someone to say that makes me think that they are into a little something (S&M or somehting similar perhaps) & I don't want people like that telling me what I can & can't do. What do you mean by BAD ATTITUDE? I don't have one, on most things anyways. EVERYONE has one at some point. I have my LTC & I take that obligation very seriously. Did you know there are some cops, state/town/city, that cannot carry a weapon outside of work because they did something stupid as a teen/adult. And yes, I drink & drive but not at the same time. I know someone who killed his best friend (the sober driver) by driving drunk & all he got was 1 yr in jail, he should've gotten more. Do things regarding DUIs need to change, some of them do yes. But don't take away their rights if it infringes upon mine, or yours or anyone elses. Don't punish all for crimes of a few. There are far more responsible people then drunk drivers.

phoenix1218...... It is a frustrating thing to lose rights, but not as bad as the DUI offenders driving their "LOADED CARS" past my families right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness out on the road. Most people drive 60mph. on the average road and thats 120mph. in oncoming traffic....... Don't want to lose your rights(driving privilege)? Do not be uncourteous to the rights of your fellow citizens on the road......Ben Franklin said something like this: To retain the freedom that we have in our republic, depends on the citizens governing themselves. If they fail in this and become corrupt(BAD ATTITUDE), THEN THEY ARE IN NEED OF MORE MASTERS......Look at it this way, if you sqrew up in a firearm infraction(BAD ATTITUDE), you can lose your right to vote. If you sqrew up in an alcohol infraction(BAD ATTITUDE), you lose your right to by the stuff for a couple of years for example. Which of the two is worse in the long run? Self governing on the "road of law" preserves freedom for everybody folks!
