Drew Barrymore Explores Inner-Beauty

Actress Is Working With The U.N., Cover Girl And Starring In A New Movie

(CBS)  This year, Drew Barrymore is on the cover of People magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People issue. The actress, who made her film debut in 1980, says she loves aesthetics, but says she searches for ways to promote inner- as well as outer-beauty.

"I just think, you know. 'What is the shell?' " she told The Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith. "I think it's the heart that says more about someone's face than anything."

Barrymore is now embarking on a series of projects that she says hopes will help people to see their inner-beauty. She will be working with Cover Girl cosmetics, a company she said represents happiness, and she also posed without makeup for the pages of People's Most Beautiful People issue.

"A lot of photography is such an art and it is so much about hair and makeup, you know, styling and lighting," she said. "It's such an art unto itself. That said, you know, people don't realize — or they do — how much work goes into it, why there's such perfection there. So I like exploring the opposition of that, just natural, just who someone is. It's a whole different art in itself."

Not that Barrymore doesn't love fashion. She said she grew up with photos of models from the interview magazines of the 1970s and 1980s.

"I never thought, like, I would be getting into the fashion world," she said.

Barrymore, who is starring in a new movie that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this week called "Lucky You" with Eric Bana, was also recently in Africa working on a documentary for the United Nations' world food program.

"It's school feeding programs," Barrymore said. "I read an article a couple years ago. My heart just grasped the fact that children want so badly to educate themselves and that they need food in order to not only survive but have the concentration. And so I started traveling through Africa. I've gone a couple years in a row now. And we shoot footage every time we go. And it's the most educational, humbling and wonderful thing. And I find that I like to learn through the forum of film. So this way I can learn and share it with people. It's just been, you know, the most important educational experience for me."

In "Lucky You" Barrymore plays Billie, a kind-hearted girl who moves to Las Vegas and falls for the bad poker player, who of course causes her all sorts of problem and pain. This movie, Barrymore said, explores the way people see the truth within each other.

"But I think generally in life, you know, what relationships really boil down to is what are these two people dealing with and how do they mirror each other and how do they sort of, you know, reveal the truth to each other and bring out the best in each other?" she said. "And that's what this is an interesting exploration of. It's fun because it's a drama and it's a character piece. You know, the beginning of a new era for me and I'm just so privileged to be in this movie. It was so much fun to do."

She's cute, but I don't know if I'd classify her as the most beautiful. I hear she's a nice person, though, so who can say. She's absolutely right about photography being an art, though. Even without make up and hair being done, a decent photographer can make a subject look beautiful with the right lights, exposure, and pose. That's exactly what was done in the "no make up & still beautiful" pictures inside the most beautiful people edition. All I know is that a person needs to at least try and be all of that on the inside, because I don't care what you do, the outside beauty can only fade as we get older.
