(CBS/AP)  A man accused of raping his own daughter and posting video of the attack on the Internet is being held in Hong Kong Wednesday in what authorities called the arrest of one of the world's most notorious child molesters.

Former Washington state lawman, 44-year-old Kenneth Freeman, the subject of a worldwide manhunt since 2005, was arrested in Hong Kong by law enforcement officials with the Chinese government, reports CBS News correspondent Stephan Kaufman.

It's not clear what Freeman was doing in Hong Kong, but "obviously, he was trying to escape," said U.S. Marshals Service spokeswoman Nikki Credic.

The scenes allegedly showing the girl being raped by her father became one of the most widely downloaded child pornography videos in recent years, adds Kaufman. Freeman's daughter is now a teenager who advocates against child sexual abuse; she has appeared on TV to tell her story.

The Web video was featured on the TV show "America's Most Wanted," which, in turn, triggered calls to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that helped identify the girl.

"Freeman will be returned for trial here, where penalties for child exploitation are among the toughest in the world," said Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Julie Myers, who oversees Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

U.S. Marshals director John F. Clark called it a "complex, international case."

Authorities said Freeman, facing local and federal charges, fled the United States last year. Investigators tracked him down in Suzhou, a city in China, where he is believed to have been working at the local office of a U.S.-based company. The United States does not have an extradition agreement with the Chinese government to return fugitives to their native nations.

However, such a treaty does exist between the United States and Hong Kong. In the last several weeks, investigators discovered Freeman was planning to travel to Hong Kong, where he was arrested on his arrival at the airport, officials said. Trying to flee, he injured four Chinese police officers while resisting arrest, officials said.

Credic said it was not clear when Freeman would be returned to the United States.

His arrest follows more than a year of investigation by the Marshals, ICE, the State Department and the Benton County Sheriff's office in Washington state.

What are you supposed to do with these animals. I read a psychological report on a study on Child abusers and molesters it stated that they never stop raping them and letting them go. They only start killing them so they cant identify them. And just continue until they die.Enough said. It may not be the socially acceptable thing to hang them. But they won't molest and murder anymore innocent children that way ; in hell is where they belong

Just to clarify (because of some typos) it was my fathers father (whom I refuse to call what I would normally call a person who is my parents father) is the one who did the molesting in my family. I firmly believe in Karma. My fathers father died a painful death and I have 2 memories of him...sitting in his favorite chair hooked up with tubes and laying in a hospital bed hooked up with tubes. And the other reason I believe in karma coming back to bite you in the a55 is because the cousin who molested me died at the age of 19 from a heart attack.

How will they ever feel safe in a country that allows *** offenders/child molesters to walk freely among us. Slap on the wrist my a$$ we need them to pay the price for hurting our children. I feel for this young lady to have endured what she has and survived it. Let us pray that this guy dies for his horific acts against his daughter and his other victims.

Peace,
First let me say I am sory for what you went through and what this creeps daughter went through. I too, as were many of my cousins (male & female) were either molested my my fathers father directly or indriectly (meaning that if he didn't do it to us directly then someone he did it to did it to us).
Now let me go on to say that I thin anyone who committed any crime deserves to spend time in jail. I think, as do most people, that child molle5ters are the worst, and though I do not think they should be put to death I do think child molle5ters should spend the rest of their lives in jail. I would not lump together all s3x offenders. Someone does not have to attack anyone in order to be listed as an offender. I know a guy who had his shirt off in the hot summer, walked by a woman and she 'thought' he was going to r@pe her. Even though he never touched her, he was convicted. Should he spend the rest of his life in jail just because of that, it wouldn't be fair. Do some r@pists deserve to be in jail forever, absolutely but each case needs to be looked at individually before a decision is made.

There are many of us who have survived the brutality of a drunken, enraged parent. I can attest to these things. The 12 guage rifle we watched my dad put to my mothers head so many times, the hand he put over her nose and mouth until she went unconscious, the senseless beatings that made her throw up puddles of blood and that was to her, us kids suffered molestation, 2x4's across the back of the head, unconsciousness, etc. Yes, we survived but not without scars. Back in the day when this was happening there were no laws to protect us. Now that there is, I hope this guy fries. He deserves no less. Children should never suffer through lives like some of us have done. We can only hope that the suffering will end soon with harsher sentences and appointing judges that don't let them walk.

The only way to get child molestation to stop is to start sentencing these animals to "Zero Tolerence" sentences. First time you are accused and found guilty it is death. These people are the lowest form of humans on the chain and they deserve no less then that. I would just take them all out back and put a .50 cent bullet in their head and save the tax payers and the victims of these crimes a whole lot of court mess and jail time.
We as a society have got to get our priorities straight. Childrens lives should be the top priority. How will they ever feel safe in a country that allows *** offenders/child molesters to walk freely among us. Slap on the wrist my a$$ we need them to pay the price for hurting our children.

Actually, that is wrong. The best way of dealing with these monsters (please don't refer to them as animals, as this is an insult to all animals) is to put them in jail into General Population. Do you know that a child molester is an automatic death sentence (or at least the hardest time possible) for anyone in G.P.? Why turn the state into murderers? And this Freeman clown was a cop... Just imagine what would happen to him if he wasn't locked away in protective custody. Molesters are generally (if it is known that their lives will be threatened) in a sort of jail within a jail. Their schedules are set so that most other inmates never see them. That seems a bigger waste. The only thing that I am against is the releasing of names of the accused before they are even found guilty. This is wrong as well. But I still stand by my statement, that to just stick a needle in their arm and end them is useless... Shouldn't they suffer as they made their children suffer? (Be they man or woman). Let's let the natural order of things within a penitentiary take their course. The other inmates will take care of these vermin for us, because many of them have children as well.....

How many molesting creeps have been slapped on the wrist for their crime let out only to kill a child next in California alone? If they got the death penalty then so be it kill them now! No appeal process. We pay out the butt to house them. Prisons way over crowded? YES All the murdering men and women are living on our tax dollars. I am an ex-con (drug conviction) from 15 years ago I am still on parole for that 1 conviction. Was suppose to get off last December did everything right like I was suppose to. But nope they still have me. For a half of gram of meth since 1994. But yet there are child molesters roaming the streets. They have not registered like they were suppose to and left state. Looking for a juicy victim.

The way I see the world today. TV molests our children everyday. It corrupts the whole world with bullcrap. Even back when it was black and white TV. Oh the power they can have with that TV. And now they are at their best. And this is only the beginning. We all need to get right or get left behind. It's all about choices!! God Bless this mans daughter. For her courage and strength.

what you say looks good on paper; however, obviously you've never been abused or have been a parent of one abused. try feeling the cold blue steel of a 357 magnum touching your forehead, being held by a drunk madman and then hearing the gun being cocked. i believe you'd be posting much harsher words. i know what i'm talking about. i lived it.
