Pet Food Toxin Said To Be Common In China

(CBS/AP)  The mildly toxic chemical melamine is commonly added to animal feed in China, a manager of a feed company and one of the chemical's producers said Monday, a process that boosts the feed's sales value but risks introducing the chemical into meat eaten by humans.

Customers either don't know or aren't concerned about the practice, said Wang Jianhui, manager of the Kaiyuan Protein Feed company in the northern city of Shijiazhuang.

"We've been running the melamine feed business for about 15 years and receiving positive responses from our customers," Wang told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

"Using the proper quantity of melamine will not harm the animals. Our products are very safe, for sure," Wang said.

Although apparently widely practiced in China, concern over the use of melamine arose only in March, after the U.S. recall of nearly 100 brands of pet food made with wheat gluten contaminated by the chemical. Adding melamine to food is illegal under American law, and China's government last week said it was banning its use in food products.

Adding melamine raises the nitrogen level of feed, making it appear that the feed is higher in protein without increasing its nutritional value. That makes it attractive to makers of feed for stock animals such as pigs, chickens, and fish, as well as companies that make prepared foods for household pets such as cats and dogs.

Despite Wang's claim of safety, pet food tainted with melamine apparently has resulted in kidney failure in an unknown number of cats and other animals across the United States.

Some pet food was also shipped to hog farms in several states for use as feed and was later discovered to have another ingredient, rice protein concentrate, imported from China that was also tainted with melamine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has blocked wheat and rice gluten from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. and Binzhou Futian Bio-technology Co. after melamine was found in samples taken from batches used to make pet food.

Although the FDA said there is no reason to believe the hogs pose any danger to humans, the quarantined swine will be euthanized and not sent markets, CBS' The Early Show's resident veterinarian, Dr. Debbye Turner reported.

China's government has said it will allow officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate melamine contamination.

Melamine is not considered a human health concern, but there is no scientific data on the health effects of melamine combined with the other compounds. Made from coal, the chemical is usually used in the making of plastics or fertilizer.

Actually, I think the US supplier got it from the Netherlands. We're going to have to start freezing Dutch ships, too.

From the FDA site:

As of April 26, 2007, FDA had collected approximately 750 samples of wheat gluten and products made with wheat gluten and, of those tested thus far, 330 were positive for melamine and/or melamine related compounds. FDA had also collected approximately 85 samples of rice protein concentrate and products made with rice protein concentrate and, of those tested thus far, 27 were positive for melamine and/or melamine related compounds. FDA's investigation has traced all of the positive samples as having been imported from China.

Say if there has been an increase in particular cancers or kidney disease or whatever, how do we know it isn't from the food we eat that comes from China? Or for that matter any country, considering that very little of it is inspected?

Also Canada may have stopped all wheatgluten etc. from coming here from China but what about the other food? And stopping it from China may not actually solve the problem because the pet food company here didn't get the wheat gluten from China, it got it from the U.S. So unless the U.S. has stopped it or we stop it from coming from the U.S., we still have a problem.

More ripples from a Canadian site:
after readiing a report on what has killed our pets, i have to ask ` what other products where made from that same shipment from China, and how many other possible human casualties can be connected. After killing all the dogs and cats in the country ( a misguided action intended to rid the country of rabies, vaccines work better) the rat population has grown to epidemic proportions,so Chinese farmers sprinkle rat poison throughout their fields, a poison banned in NAmerica for its toxicity, When the wheat is harvested by machine, months later,it`s laid out in long winrows on the ground to be picked up by machine or human labourers. there is where the contamination occurs.with this in mind i have to question the safety of any baked goods or gluten products using Chinese wheat.

Sad to say: now my very own cat is sick. He's been throwing up every day for the last week and losing weight. I don't have the money to take him to the vet. If this cat dies, a lot of US Federal Officials are going to suffer far more than he has. The United States needs to FREEZE all Chinese shipments in port NOW until we can figure out what's going on here.

I'm sorry for all my customers who will suffer because of this crisis. I will have to close my store tomorrow, and this is going to set a lot of people back (I own a repair shop).

The ripples keep expanding. The US Economy suffers in all directions...

Canada is ALREADY blocking all Chinese grain shipments at the border, according to this article:

http://stevejanke.com/archives/224465.php

So, erasmus6, at least you don't have much to worry about, for the time being. Any good apartments for rent up there? Cats allowed?
