  • Who's Who Firings Firestorm

Justice Department at center of controversy over firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

(AP)  A small group of student protesters, including one wearing a black hood and an orange jumpsuit, heckled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as he posed with old classmates during their 25-year Harvard Law School reunion.

"When the photographer was getting everybody set up and having people say 'cheese,' the protesters yelled: 'say torture, instead,' 'resign' and 'I don't recall,"' said Nate Ela, a protester and third-year student.

Law school spokesman Mike Armini said the impromptu protest Saturday was so small that some of those attending the photo shoot did not notice it.

Ela said the protesters followed Gonzales into the law school's library, chanting "shame" and "resign," before the attorney general's security detail took him to his motorcade.

Gonzales was at the university to deliver a lunchtime speech, a visit that was unannounced to students. But word spread quickly after his motorcade and security detail were spotted.

"The departure was clearly undignified," said Thomas Becker, a second-year law student who wore the black hood and orange jumpsuit during the protest. "He looked really annoyed."

A Department of Justice spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Gonzales is resisting pressure to resign as lawmakers question whether he could effectively run the Justice Department amid the controversy over the firings of eight prosecutors.

AH, students taking an interest in Politics. Maybe there's hope for our country yet.
I'm gaining hope our young people may not be as gullible as those that grew up in more peaceful times and never learned the price we pay for putting our country on autopilot.
OVERSIGHT and active involvement may yet save our Constitution.

Considering the small amount of protestors, why was this a news story?? Its like when the FBI director was suppose to be heckled by demonstrators, an it turned out to be just a few.

Why don't I see the storys of demonstrators that dog the Democrats. Interesting. Again, the Liberal bias is showing.

Harvard is a bastion for liberal hate and intolerance. At least that's the face that America sees. Here's a School that was founded by what liberals would call today, right-wing purtians. This is the same school that fought to have the ex-president of Iran speak at their school .............yet in 1986 hundreds of students and professors protested when Ronald Reagan announced a visit to the school. As it turned out Reagan, with great class, withdrew his scheduled visit by proclaiming there had been a scheduling conflict.
So here's Reagan, who MOST people, credit with hundreds of millions of people being free today in the old Soviet Union and Eastern Europe being protested by rich white liberals snobs at Harvard.............this and they are a disgrace to this great nation.................. really sad indeed

Oh yeah right LOL, it was SOOOO small a protest that not even those in the photo shoot noticed, but it makes front page stories on CBS news right?

No one noticed the news photographer covering that aspect too I guess, Mike is another Bush lover who spins the minimization tale for damage control.

But WE all know better don't we children? A protest makes CBS news, and a google search in the "news" tab for "gonzales" brings up over 233 news articles related to the headline on line one of the results there of;

Ronald Ragoon didn't free anyone in Russia - he only freed the corporate giants and the ugly faces of the 'christian' right to do as they damned well please. He died a drooling fool - exactly what he was in life. He rots in Hell.

Give credit to the man who actually freed Russia from communism - Pope John Paul II...and stop trying to edit history like the Republishit Party taught you to do.

Impeachment of all involved with the Bush crime family definitely should be pursued, given all the secrecy and the usurpation and abuse of unprecedented power which these thugs have used against the American people. The sooner we get rid of them the better it is for all of us.

Harvard should sue him for damaging their reputation. He's not their greatest alumnus. His graduation raises questions about their requirements. If he were from a wealthy family, it would be understandable considering legacies and the Ivy League tradition of selling the best degrees (for example Gonzales' boss.) One option is they needed Latino graduates to meet their goals. Another option of is that he earned his degree and had a sharp legal mind and is suffering from the severe, early onset of Alzheimer's.

Given the state of his memory function today, if he wasn't lying to Congress, he wouldn't be able to get W out of jury duty to keep his criminal record under wraps, today.

From the story:

"Gonzales was at the university to deliver a lunchtime speech, a visit that was unannounced to students."

The Attorney General of the US visiting his old alma mater for a class reunion is kept secret?

This is the most corrupt administration in American history. As evidenced by the fact the entire administration must hide from the public it claims to be serving.

Every American should see the Moyers report
from last week, documenting how our "liberal"

You can watch it on your computer;

You won't be getting up once you start into it,
it's riveting. Pass the link on please -

If the President and Gonzales do not have enough shame to resign or honor to realize when they have compromised their jobs--maybe it is time for the American people to shame them. Kudos to the crowd at Harvard. Everywhere they go--Americans should have the bravery to hound them and let them know they are not wanted, that failing to produce documents and papers after a subpoena are NOT condoned-- We should ridicule them until they understand that THEY and only THEY have undermined their positions and that the only way to remedy it is to resign. Realistically though, look for Gonzo to resort to planned photo ops and fixed, adoring crowds like Bush has to.

MOST people does not mean the Republican base--as far as I know--they are the only people to give Reagan that honor and accolade. MOST people (Meaning all the rest except for the GOP) credit good ol' capitalism working its magic and influencing the collapse of the Soviet Union as well as the about face we saw in Vietnam--as for Reagan--lucky him--he happened to be President when it all happened--but he did not cause it any more than Katrina was caused by George Bush or the cold war was caused by Roosevelt. Global Things happen--smart people realize that often, those in charge have very little to do with those things when it involves complex social dynamics. But just so you feel better, you can name specifically, what Reagan did or said that caused the Soviet Union to collapse.

Good luck with that.

Time for a war tax to pay as you go for this war. it will be extremely popular with Republicans as it will be a chance for each to put their money where their mouths are. Time for all Americans to begin to suffer and pay the price for this war of choice besides with bumper stickers, letters and cookies from elementary classes.

Republicans particularly will not protest this special tax which will continue as long as the war is being fought in Iraq and will NOT increase our deficit since it will be coming out of each of our pockets each year until the war ends. Let's see...how much would that be--to really show we are willing to sacrifice for the troops? 2500.00/year per family? or should it be more if we make more...How about a 10% increase above the 2.5K for everyone making over 35K/year? A hardship? Sure--but as every American knows--war is hell and we all must do our part--plus we don't want a debt from a war of choice on our children now do we? Please feel free to forward this to your Congressmen and ask that it be introduced as a bill. Then we will see, if having a war and sacrificing for it is really what Americans want to do--or if it is only something they want others to do for them.

They want the audience filled with then same kind of people that the CHIMP surrounds himself with, YES MEN!

I only hope that Shrub the Dumbnificent and Darth Cheney receive the same kind of treatment from the American people when they leave office; after they leave office they want be able to use the police or secret service to keep the protesters out of sight. I personally plan to show up at any public function they plan to attend in my home town and meet them with boos and jeers.

Reagan is credited with bringing down the Soviet Union but all he did was pull American tax dollars out of social programs and plow it all into a huge military arms buildup, enriching the defense contractors while impoverishing America, and coincidentally the Soviets were forced to attempt the same, but they were an impoverished empire to start with so the arms race could not be sustained on their side, and yes, they imploded. I never saw street people in Washington DC until the Reagan Administration. By the way, Reagan dealt arms all over the world and certainly propped up horrible right wing regimes in Central and South America, not to mention sell arms to Iran, involving Israel in the deal. The worst thing Saint Ronnie did was get hundreds of Marines killed in Lebanon because he couldn't control Israel. That should have earned him impeachment but NO - the right wing deifies him. Go figure.

Folks, Pres. Reagan dismantled communism. Your rhetoric that the communists did themselves in was partially correct. They attempted to keep up with the USA and communism failed. Capitalism prevailed. Reagan promoted capitalism around the world and that's a good thing.

Quick work to get a protest organized for an unannounced arrival. Good for them. Whether you agree with their views or not, it's free speech in action - unlike, as other posters have pointed out, the usual whitewashed photo-ops that Bush admin appearances are.

Reagan deserves some credit for the fall of Communism, to be fair. I didn't agree with a lot of his policies per se, but I do think that he actually had the interests of the nation at heart, and he was a good motivator and speaker. Although it's true that he did little good to social programs, his plan to outspend the Soviets until their system collapsed did in fact work, and it's hard to argue with success.

In contrast, Bush has the interests of himself and his friends at heart, and is a barely articulate national embarrassment every time he opens his mouth. He has failed at every endeavor in his life, reserving the worst disaster for the most important job - his sham of a presidency.

I say "sham" because the only way in which anything his administration has done makes sense is if you look at his entire term as an ongoing robbery of the nation on a grand scale. He has damaged the economy, the environment, our international relations, our educational system ... you name it, he's hurt it. The only people who have profited are those fat cats he refers to as "his people".

And yet somehow, some non-billionaires continue to support him. Such blind stupidity beggars explanation, frankly; only near-retardation or totally delusional thinking can make Bush look like a good president.

Whatever you may think of Reagan, his administration was a model of efficiency, transparency, and ethical governance compared to the bozos in charge today.

Everytime Bush compares himself to Lincoln, Churchill or Reagan all three of them collectively groan and turn over in their graves.
