"Real" Kryptonite Discovered
Mineral Found In Serbia Has Same Composition As Fictional Superman Substance
-
The material is white, powdery and not radioactive — unlike the glowing green crystals usually depicted in the Superman comics. (Warner Bros. Pictures)
While the material is not a perfect match, its chemical breakdown is strikingly similar.
A drill core of the unusual mineral was unearthed in Serbia by the mining group Rio Tinto PLC, which turned it over to mineral expert Chris Stanley at the Natural History Museum for analysis.
"Towards the end of my research I searched the Web using the mineral's chemical formula, sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide, and was amazed to discover that same scientific name written on a case of rock containing kryptonite stolen by Lex Luthor from a museum in the film 'Superman Returns,'" Stanley said.
The material is white, powdery and not radioactive — unlike the glowing green crystals usually depicted in the Superman comics. It will be formally named Jadarite when it is described in the European Journal of Mineralogy later this year.
Approximately 30 to 40 new minerals are discovered each year, the museum said, although usually only in the form of a few grains only visible under the microscope.

- Isn't it funny it was found in a foreign country? And isn't it strange that the US didn't find it. Or is this a news story just to take our minds off that Bush fella. Oh ya the President.

- I think we need to get away from burning oil/petro mainly to be rid of our oil connections with people who OBVIOUSLY fund terrorists. The connections are sickening. Do a little research and you will be enlightened.

I am with you ,research is in order. Terrorist's huh? Considering Canada has been our largest supplier of oil since the 70's and will be for the next 20 years. Yep!! better build a wall - Reply to this comment
- Reason they call it Jadarite is same reason Europe uses metric system and we do not. Lets confuse everyone! So, rather than give people credit for something, we use a diferent name or system, and whoever squeaks most gets greased, and gets to keep name.
I worked in a company where they jumped back and forth from our system and metric system several times, and each time we had to have all brand new instrumentation for our control room panels, and pumps. Lets see, lets change from MGD to liters/second and see if anyone notices.
But, since we are talking about kryptonite, have you noticed more UFO's and reports these last couple decades? I wonder what they were lacking at their own solar system? Or, are UFO's here to watch us goofy people squak about everything in life, It's like watching the I Love Lucy Show. We must be putting the best act in the universe. - Reply to this comment
- If we could just find SUPERMAN....

- What a joke! What's next? Scientists have discovered a substance called "soylent green"?

- Oh, and they cannot call it Kryptonite because it is not related to the element krypton.

- Does this story mention Bush at all? No! Does it mention the US government at all? No! Does it even mention the US at all? No! So why call for Bush's impeachment on a completely irrelevant article's discussion board? All this does is make you look unintelligent and like an idiot. Note: I am not saying that calling for Bush's impeachment makes you look like an idiot, but rather that calling for it on an irrelevant board makes you look foolish. And for the record, I'm not a Bush fan.
As for the article.... it is being called Jadarite because it was discovered in a mine in Jadar, Serbia. I think this is a crazy coincidence, and I got a good chuckle when I first heard the story on BBC News. - Reply to this comment
- Why call it Jadarite when it has already been identified as Kryptonite?
Mankind is totally irrational. - Reply to this comment
- Did it contain traces of tobacco, just like the stuff Richard Pryor concocted in his mock-up of kryptonite in "Superman III"? :D

- Global Warming may very well be a farce. Pollution is A REAL PROBLEM though. If we need to be tricked into polluting less...so be it.
I think we need to get away from burning oil/petro mainly to be rid of our oil connections with people who OBVIOUSLY fund terrorists. The connections are sickening. Do a little research and you will be enlightened.
Anyone know about Henry Fords HEMP car built over 50 years ago. Built from hemp based plastics. Fueled by hemp seed oil. Hemp is one of the easiest and lowest maintenance crops to produce. Why do you think they call it weed. There are some midwestern states that cannot get rid of wild hemp. They try to eradicate it every year...it just keeps growing back. Too bad DuPont is in bed with the oil companies. Google "DuPont Hemp"...you will see the connection (nylon). Some say marijuana is man's kryptonite. - Reply to this comment

- Are you absolutely 100% sure it is the exact same scientists touting global warming?
They sure are loud. We can hear them all the way from Siberia. We all know the mining companies and corporate fat rats are behind the global warming farce. - Reply to this comment
- These are the same scientists that are touting "global warming", another fictional creation.
