CBS Poll: 36% Say Gonzales Should Quit

Two-Thirds Of Those Following News Do Not Believe Attorney General In Firings Firestorm

  • Who's Who Firings Firestorm

(CBS)  According to a CBS News Poll conducted last week, nearly two-thirds of those who are following developments in the Justice Department firings of eight U.S. Attorneys do not think Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is telling the truth about the dismissals.

Of those who are paying attention, large majorities of Democrats and Independents (80 percent and 71 percent, respectively) do not think Gonzales is being honest, compared to 55 percent of Republicans who think he is.

Of all Americans, 36 percent think Gonzales should resign or be removed from his post as a result of the firings; 28 percent think he should not, while just over a third is unsure. But among all who are closely following the story, more than half — 52 percent — think Gonzales should resign.

However, fewer Americans are following the news about the firings than they were a few weeks ago — Democrats are a bit more likely to be following the story than are Republicans. This may change once Gonzales testifies before Congress. His appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, originally scheduled for earlier this week, was postponed until today in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings.

So whoever wrote this story got it wrong. It is not one third that thinks he should resign, it is 52%. didn't inhale did not catch or correct THAT (wonder why)? Guess going without oxygen will do that to you. Does anyone think it kind of telling that the fact that Republicans somehow think Gonzales should keep his job even though he is a liar? This, for the highest justice dept job in the land?

So...lying to start wars, torture, outing CIA agents, accepting bribes and possibly corrupt law enforcement cases is GOOD to the GOP but lying about oral *** with an intern is BAD. Yes. We think all of America is seeing the true colors of the neo cons now. Those colors don't run? AMERICANS CAN SAVE AMERICA

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND IF YOU LIKE DEAD AMERICAN SOLDIERS STAY THE COURSE IN IRAQ AND VOTE REPUBLICAN!

PLEASE READ ATTACHED ARTICLES WE CAN IMPEACH BUSH CHENEY!

According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted in June, 52 percent of Americans now believe the President deliberately distorted intelligence to make a case for war. In an Ipsos Public Affairs poll, commissioned by AfterDowningStreet.org and completed October 9, 50 percent said that if Bush lied about his reasons for going to war Congress should consider impeaching him. The President's deceit is not only an abuse of power; it is a federal crime. Specifically, it is a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 371, which prohibits conspiracies to defraud the United States.

Another example of how Republicans (voters) are out of touch with mainstream America. 71% of independents (not even Democrats) feel that Gonzales has not been truth. Compare that to 31% of Republicans who feel the same. This 40% discrepancy also roughly matches the discrepancy among independents and Republicans in Bush' approval rating.

And by the way, it's already been known that Gonzales has made false statements on this matter. (Not being involved in the decisions, not dismissing for political reasons... So like Bush, he has either has to be the dumbest person in the world and does not remember e-mails from Karl Rove or he's lying or both.

Actually, if you'd taken a moment to read the article you'd find that only 28% think he should not resign, while just over a third is unsure.

So, more Americans believe he should resign than those who think he shouldn't. If anything, the headline is misleading in favor of Gonzales.

The focus of the Attorney General must always be the law of the United States. Playing politics with the hiring and firing of the District Attorneys should never even be contemplated let alone pursued as a policy. Mr. Gonzales should therefore resign immediately.

CBS has failed 3rd grade arithmetic here. This is pathetic. First, the article subject says 36% say he should resign and none of the numbers in the the survey matchg that.
Next, the numners in the should he resign survey don't add up. How can Democrats, Republicans, and Independents all have above 30% unsure and the total has 10% unsure?
For shame CBS. Come back when you learn to add. Better yet, fire the person responsible for this pathetic work and get someone competent to add, subtract, and divide!

Another misleading CBS headline.

The story begins fair enough, referring to "people familiar with the case." But, then cites "all Americans" in its headline.

The majority of Americans do not know who the attorney general is, or what he does. So how can their opinions be considered worthy of the headline?

52% of those "familiar with the case" think Gonzo should resign, including me.

Posted by Infidel_US at 10:47 AM : Apr 19, 2007

He lied to congress and the American people. And, did so on tv, with his own mouth.

According to the standards set by the GOP controlled congress, that is grounds for impeachment.

If he lied to Congress he is ethically not fit for office. If he told the truth he is grossly incompetent. Either way, he should resign. If he fired 10% of his most important employees while knowing nothing about the situation he is grossly incompetent.
The only way he might stay is if he has information on the President and/or Vice President that is worthy of impeachment.

1) You do believe that AG Gonzales is lying about the firing of these poor, innocent attorneys recently, don't you?

Is there anyone now not believe that CBS news has a left wing bias? 36% percent say Gonzales should quit?! Why doesn't this story lead with 63% of Americans say he shouldn't quit. But I think we all know the answer.Heaven forbid that CBS put a positive side to a story. Just goes to show no matter how hard CBS tries to create a scandle when there isn't one, all they can come up with is 36%. Pitiful. No wonder they are losing veiwership. You know you can still report the news objectively and still have a positive perspective!

Ooooh!! Me! MeMeMe!!

Oh, wait. You weren't really looking for an answer on that, were you? My bad.

For the slower members of our studio audience--the NEWS is the change from what's current. How is it news to talk about how many people want him to stay when he's still in office? That's cheerleading, not news.

If CBS has a "liberal bias" they would have rigged the survey, and manipulated the results, so they can have a 70% think Gonzo should quit.

Go back to Fox Noise.

Vet,
The majority you speak of are not aware of the case. That majority would answer yes to just about any question that were asked of them just to get off the phone so they could eat dinner.

Like I have said before, Bush should have fired ALL of them from the start like most Presidents before him, including the beloved Clinton.

tcoleman12---do you read the other posts? Or just blindly publish the same message again and again?

Big guy--just for you:

Several media outlets have compared the Bush administration's controversial dismissals of eight U.S. attorneys to President Clinton's dismissal of almost all U.S. attorneys upon taking office in 1993. Clinton's firing of the prosecutors was highlighted March 13 at Drudgereport.com, the website of Internet gossip Matt Drudge. Over the next 24 hours, several media outlets -- including Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Times, and MSNBC -- echoed the unfounded comparison between the Clinton and Bush dismissals.

In fact, while both Clinton and Bush dismissed nearly all U.S. attorneys upon taking office following an administration of the opposite party, The Washington Post reported in a March 14 article that "legal experts and former prosecutors say the firing of a large number of prosecutors in the middle of a term appears to be unprecedented and threatens the independence of prosecutors."

Gonzales can resign when Janet Reno, Clinton's hatchet lady Att. General is arrested and tried for the heinous murder of everyone at that church in Waco ,Texas including 17 children. When she is arrested and tried for the murders in Ruby Ridge , Idaho. When she is tried for the Illegal snatching and deportation to Cuba of the little Gonzales boy in Florida. Well the list goes on and on.

Is anyone surprised that Gonzalez lied? Has any official in this unfortunate administration ever told the truth? Every policy initiated by these morons has been aimed at making it impossible for the Democrats to ever win another election. There are some remarkable similiarties between the way Bush and Rove have governed and the manner in which Adolf Hitler turned Germany into a one party dictatorship. Remember, Hitler did not come to power by using force, he was appointed Chancellor, and promptly proceeded to change the laws so that the Nazi party would be the only political force in Germany. Bush, Rove, and Tom Delay have tried the same thing here. Fortunately, America finally woke up at the last election, and just in time too.
