Border Patrol Agents Under Attack

By
Melissa McNamara
(CBS)  Along the desert stretch where Arizona and Mexico meet, there's more flying in the air than just dust. There are rocks flying back and forth toward the border agents, CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella reports.

It's part of a nightly bombardment of Border Patrol vehicles and agents all along the southwestern border.

Chris Van Wagenen, a senior patrol agent, says "it's mostly going to be smugglers, guides, gangbangers basically. People who make money off of this.

"This" means smuggling people and drugs into the U.S. It's gotten a lot harder to cross the border, and smugglers are reacting to more fences and more agents with more violence.

"They believe, almost like a terrorist, 'we're going to intimidate you and hurt you until you back off,'" Van Wagenen says.

Assaults against agents in the Yuma sector have shot up to 126 in the first six months of this fiscal year. That's approaching the number of assaults all last year.

Agent Ben Vick was lucky he was wearing a helmet when this brick hit his head.

"I looked down and though, 'Oh, that's what hit me.' Because before that, I had no idea. It was just such a huge blow," Vick says.

With cameras mounted on Agent Vick's vehicle, CBS News set out to see what happens just after dark. A rock quickly hit the car.

"It gives you an idea of what we have to deal with down here. Things being thrown over the fence — heavy things," Vick says.

The Mexican side of the border looks more like a back alley than an international boundary. There's plenty of ammunition for anyone who wants to attack an agent on the other side, and the people who live there say police rarely patrol.

Without more help from Mexico, all agents can do is patrol the border in "war wagons," with windows shielded by steel. The way they see it, as long as there are people desperate to cross into the U.S., there will be smugglers willing to do anything to keep their business.

Coffeehead,
I think you are drining too much coffee, my friend. Canada is far more advanced than this country in many ways. Universal healthcare is not perfect but the way to go, so you won't loose your shirt, house and else paying bills if you ever get sick in this USA! about the CFR and its works to slave this country into a One World Government and an 'intergrated North America', is pathetic and treason to say the least. The guys who run this country are part of this treason and should be hanged in the nearest plaza!
I am glad americans are waking up to the danger but is rather late..the take over of this nation by the power elite has been in the works since Abraham Lincoln murder. This nations was chosen by the Gods to be the lighbearer for this crasy world..but its leaders chosen by the people thought otherwise and we are in the way to the abyss..

Al_Idaho and everyone -- all you Americans are so right. Our federal level leaders have lost sight of what is the US. We as Americans must defend our nation and its interests, not on the other side of the world, but in our own backyard. We must work harder to ensure that more Americans graduate from high school and college, that more Americans have greater opportunities, and that more Americans maintain the jobs that otherwise are going to more and more hispanic illegals.
America no longer fights for its own livelihood. It seems to me that now Mexico and its government is calling the shots, and what has Mexico done for us? Remember, each year over 18 billion dollars migrate to Mexico that illegals send back home to take care of the ten brothers and sisters and father and mother. We are enriching Mexico and Mexicans; how about us Americans?
Each year, states spend great sums of money for the care and welfare of illegal aliens and their anchor babies (supposedly known as US Citizens), and what are we getting in return. Mexico -- give us Baja California, the entire peninsula, so that Americans can homestead the state, and perhaps then, we can begin to think about an amnesty program for those 15,000,000 illegal Mexicans living in the USA unlawfully.

Our greedy politicians have sold us down the river...that's the reality of it all. Make no mistake, if a muslim extremist detonates a suitcase nuke in one of our cities it will be the rallying cry for all the crazies to unleash their jihad on the rest of our cities.

I read a crazy prediction somewhere that said once the U.S. completely bankrupts itself from wars and has its military spread too thin...heavily outnumbering us, Russia and China will launch a suprise attack on our mainland using muslim fighters as a spearhead and then striking our cities with submarine based tactical weapons offshore. Once 1 or 2 of our cities are decimated with portable nukes (supplied by the Russians) the Chinese will enter through Mexico en masse and the two countries will try to put a strangehold on our nation. Consequently, China will give Mexico free reign to loot our cities in exchange for being able to use their country as a staging ground. After all this hell breaks loose, the only ones left to defend the U.S. will be average arms-bearing Americans as military personnel will be largely stationed in other places across the world. They won't have enough time to react.

Well...I know it sounds very far-fetched, but where this country is headed...in 10, 20 years, nothing is outside the realm of possibility.

Bush is a traitor, a horrible actor, a greedy backwards stuttering fool that is so codependent on "advisors" and co-opt liberal lawyers, he has lost all touch with reality. When the bottom-line is the bottom-line, what do you expect, war contracts, a failing education system (for the purpose of dumbing down the masses so they can be over-taxed with inane earmarks slipped surreptiously into house/senate bills, media that's out of control, billboards, expansionism, and all this ***! But what is the average hard-working American going to do! You create local militant associations and you grab your arms and March on Washington, that's what you do. Then you capture the politicians in their estates, try them for dereliction of duty and sedition, and put them and their lawyers under the chopping block.

My friends.. we're screwed. The Republicans have become a self-serving party, interested in only THEIR INTERESTS. And the Democrats have become a party of European socialists. With a combination of communist China and Russia waiting for their chance at world domination, once Bush finishes this country off by bankrupting it completely, allowing 40 million illegal aliens from Mexico to pour across our border, and spreading our military thinly across the globe, there will be little else for us to do except wait for the end.

God help us.

When our own government, at the behest of Il Presidente Jorge Bush, 1. punishes our own border patrol agents for doing their jobs and allows illegal aliens to sue them for damages, 2. punishes our own Marines for doing their jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan, 3. seeks to open the floodgates of illegal immigration so he and the Republican party can *** themselves out for the Hispanic vote (which will still go to the Democrats anyway), 4. completely mismanages this debacle in Iraq bankrupting our Treasury while allowing his buddies to run up huge contracts in Iraq, 5. wants to turn our ports over to Dubai, 6. has absolutely no intentions of leaving Iraq because he could give a rat's *** about the troops dying there just as long as he and his buddies are milking the situation for all its worth... it's a pathetic case with no cure in sight. Who is going to make things better? The Democrats? Does anyone in their right mind think Hillary won't be any less corrupt than Bush? We've already witnessed the extreme corruption under her husband's reign with his dealings with the communists in China. Will Democrats like Dianne Feinstein speak out for justice? The same person who, along with her husband Richard Blum, has raked in millions from war profiteering in Iraq?
