(CBS)  Along the desert stretch where Arizona and Mexico meet, there's more flying in the air than just dust. There are rocks flying back and forth toward the border agents, CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella reports.

It's part of a nightly bombardment of Border Patrol vehicles and agents all along the southwestern border.

Chris Van Wagenen, a senior patrol agent, says "it's mostly going to be smugglers, guides, gangbangers basically. People who make money off of this.

"This" means smuggling people and drugs into the U.S. It's gotten a lot harder to cross the border, and smugglers are reacting to more fences and more agents with more violence.

"They believe, almost like a terrorist, 'we're going to intimidate you and hurt you until you back off,'" Van Wagenen says.

Only On The Web: More with senior Border Patrol agent Chris Van Wagenen.
Assaults against agents in the Yuma sector have shot up to 126 in the first six months of this fiscal year. That's approaching the number of assaults all last year.

Agent Ben Vick was lucky he was wearing a helmet when this brick hit his head.

"I looked down and though, 'Oh, that's what hit me.' Because before that, I had no idea. It was just such a huge blow," Vick says.

With cameras mounted on Agent Vick's vehicle, CBS News set out to see what happens just after dark. A rock quickly hit the car.

"It gives you an idea of what we have to deal with down here. Things being thrown over the fence — heavy things," Vick says.

The Mexican side of the border looks more like a back alley than an international boundary. There's plenty of ammunition for anyone who wants to attack an agent on the other side, and the people who live there say police rarely patrol.

Without more help from Mexico, all agents can do is patrol the border in "war wagons," with windows shielded by steel. The way they see it, as long as there are people desperate to cross into the U.S., there will be smugglers willing to do anything to keep their business.

Next thing we'll hear is the Mexican government making another round of accusations and threats about our 'unfair and inhuman' treatment of their people that would be the same people who are so desparate to get out of Mexico. Perhaps if the Mexican government would spend more time and money improving conditions in their country they me have more people wanting to stay there.

shoot on site:
TWO WORDS, RAMOS & COMPEAN; The last time the border partol agents used force (shoot on site) to stop a suspected drug smuggler, they both were arrested, prosecuted, and are now serving 10-12 years, for just doing their jobs. I should add that another Deputy Sherriff, was also arrested and sent to prison, for shooting out a tire on a suspected illegal, who was fleeing from the officer after trying to run over him with their car. These cases were brought on by pressure, protest from the Mexican Government.

Illegal immigrants are costing this country an estimated $100 BILLION per year in social services, plus untold $$$ for language accomodation, driving wages down for working class Americans and adversly effecting our society in general.

The government should offer a bounty for each illegal that is turned in to officials... say $1000. Then let's say we spend $1000 shipping them home.

It would then cost $40 BILLION to rid our country
20 MILLION law-breakers.

Mexican Nationals Attack US Border Patrol Agents

No amnesty now or EVER.

Why do we want ANYONE new in the USA that breaks our laws from the get go? WE don%u2019t. Anyone caught violation our border should be PERMANENTLY barred from citizenship.

Bush is pandering the hispanic vote in the USA. What the USA should be doing is telling Mexico to patrol their side of the border. If they don%u2019t we should start shooting ANYONE attacking our Border Patrol Agents. We didn%u2019t hire the National Guard or Border Patrol Agents to be sitting ducks.

Bush%u2019s public relations push should stop showing pictures of illegals picking vegetable. That is nonsense. The vast majority of illegals take high paying jobs in US industry. When meat packers were caught with illegals, thousand of unemployed US citizens applied to work in the packing plants. Construction jobs in California provide skill training to thousands of illegal while our young people can%u2019t find jobs. Bush, business, and the GOP think we are crazy. Well, the next election will show our disgust with politicians, greedy businessmen and not US law.

Terrorist%u2019s road to American%u2019s heartland runs through Mexico. Everyone knows it. Time to protect US Borders. If we can send 150,000 troops to Iraq to protect Baghdadis we can staff our border protection PROPERLY.

This stinks of sweatback payola. Someone high up must be putting an insane amount of money$ out for our government to grab, to allow this. Now who would have that much stroke? May be a powerful rich Texan, say ... in the witehouse? He's got like ... a halliburton tan and don't mind getting a few good men killed or put away to line the pockets of his good old buddies. This a a war between the American citizen and the two parties of our government. Both parties arrogantly refuse to do the will of the citizenry. The American people do not want illegals in this country and they certainly don't want any amnesty. I'm nauseated by their great concern about disrupting lives and families of these invaders. What about the lives and families of the American people? We are disrupted every time we press one for English! Every time we have to wait at an intersection for hordes of Mexicans pushing shopping carts through the red light! Every time we go to an emergency room! Every time we call a government office and can't get anyone who can speak English! Enough is enough. DEPORT ALL OF THEM NOW. NO MORE ANCHOR BABIES. OUT WITH THE BATH WATER!

This country was built by immigrants - mostly european and some asian - NOT mexican. Now they come by the millions to get what they can take - they don't want to pay taxes or for medical or education, they don't want to go thru the same immigration process of medical exams and background checks that our families did. They wave their mexican flag and demand rights? Are patriotic law abiding americans racist for wanting to put an end to this thievery?

I think people are getting ready for the oncoming 2nd Mexican war.

Skulking around on some boards, you hear rumors that with the huge influx of Iraqi vets returning, training sessions on how to build IED's are soon in the offing. This knowledge spreading will make it interesting for the political class and likely the coyotes driving these truck loads of illegals...or anyone else deemed appropriate anywhere.

With the coming huge influx of Mexican trucks on the interstate system, a few IED's on the US Interstate system would bring the entire country to a stand still if the trucking industry came under the same barrage here.

ARM THE BORDER PATROL WITH MACHINE GUNS AND ALLOW THEM TO FIGHT WITH THEM!!! If the border patrol is armed and allowed to fight whoever is on the other side of the border with weapons of various means, then I bet you will not see the border so open as it is now. Even with fences, the border is still open to illegals coming from Mexico. Maybe what needs to be done is to put anti-personnel mines along the border with Mexico. That will stop them fast.

Then you have all the ones from Haiti coming into Florida in rickety unsea worthy boats. If the Coast Guard was allowed to fire on these boats and sink a few of them, you will not have as many trying the journey. Oh, and let us not forget the Cubans who try to cross. Sink them also.

What we need in the White House is someone who is willing to stand strong on not letting illegals into this country. You have that in other countries, so why can't we have it here in the United States????

There are rocks flying back and forth? Who from the American side is throwing rocks? Shouldn't US AMERICANS be throwing hand grenades instead?
CBS news is starting to see itself lose it's credibility, because their agenda is to pretend that there is no such thing as an illegal alien invasion, so they present this VERY LIGHWEIGHT story as they try to catch up to reality. What about the thousands of Americans murdered by illegal aliens, or the rapes going on? Why no story on that? Because the TRUTH is contrary to the CBS agenda. www.reportanddeport.org

The patriotic comments are quite touchy...but fanatical in my opinion. Are you, dear patriot friend willing to do the manual job that mexicans do? No, I doubt it. Watch the movie A Day without mexicans..it will open your eyes somehow. If mexicans would be blue eyes, blonde and fair skin nobody would complain and they will be welcome to America. Buy they are not...so get over, my patriotic friends. Mexicans are here to stay. They were here first...did you forget?? of course, you did. That fanaticism does...blinds you. Wake up, and smell the roses..from Mexico!

jobs we won't do? PURE PROPAGANDA.

The fact is that our countrymen have already paid their dues to create a country that demanded fair labor standards - with their blood, time and effort. FTAA is a scam that promotes illegals ONLY to lower those standards and create a PROFITIZED north american UNION.

If mexicans are so afraid to demand and fight for those very rights in their OWN country - then why expect our countrymen to FLUSH our own forefathers efforts down the toilet.

Mexico is one of the MOST WEALTHY nations in the world. Yet the people run and hide in America, they lower OUR standards because of FEAR of demanding their own in their HOMELAND.

They create peon wages for this country - they protest in our streets and utilize our tax dollars to have "protection" (yet we imprison our own workers when they do this). They stop the flow of daily life, hang our flag up-side down and their organizers are exhaulted as saviours while our labor orgainzers are arrested and fined millions of dollars.... makes absolutely no sense. Oh yeah - it does though; considering our government wants to undo america and it's history of democracy. ONE WORLD ORDER has no place for ONE CULTURE or anyplace for middle class workers.

America is STILL subliminally inert. FTAA -
privatized PROFIT at the cost of Americans' freedom,CULTURE,language and MONEY. Read it.

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has just let the cat out of the bag about what's really behind our trade agreements and security partnerships with the other North American countries. A 59-page CFR document spells out a five-year plan for the "establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community" with a common "outer security perimeter."
"Community" means integrating the United States with the corruption, socialism, poverty and population of Mexico and Canada. "Common perimeter" means wide-open U.S. borders between the U.S., Mexico and Canada. "Community" is sometimes called "space" but the CFR goal is clear: "a common economic space ... for all people in the region, a space in which trade, capital, and people flow freely." The CFR's "integrated" strategy calls for "a more open border for the movement of goods and people."

The CFR document lays "the groundwork for the freer flow of people within North America." The "common security perimeter" will require us to "harmonize visa and asylum regulations" with Mexico and Canada, "harmonize entry screening," and "fully share data about the exit and entry of foreign nationals."

This is a response to Art;

The manual labor jobs that Americans won't do? I come from a family of construction workers, coal miners and police officers. I am a concrete finisher and I've been involved in the construction trades for the past 39 years of my life. I'm very proud of what I do and who I am.

You are right about certain jobs that true Americans refuse to do. Trespassing, rape, murder, theft, drunk driving, spreading the socialist-communist doctrine tops the list of jobs that Americans refuse to do.

I believe that we are in the process of watching the average American starting to stand up and flex our muscles. So, Art I would either purchase a plane ticket to your favorite communist nation or find a skirt to hide under if I were you. You and your kind are about ready to have your butts handed to you.

You could not get me to be a border agent for $200K. The Agency does not support them, the government does not support them and the courts do not support them. They are under daily physical attack and the first time the defend themselves, the crackpots go after them. They are in a war and too few in authority care about them. Border patrol agents are heroes. Somebody stand up for them.

Think about this.....The leftists have pushed their gun control agenda for so many years with one true goal in mind. That goal has been and always will be absolute power. The more that they sense anger and frustration in the American public the greater their effort to enact laws that would strip us of any rights and methods to protect and defend ourselves. Lock and Load!!!

Time to give the guard the order to lock and load. First rock then the first shot will be heard. Either protect our borders or give in to drugs and illegal aliens. When the good guys go to jail for trying to protect the border it is time to tell the government act or move on and let those of us who can act stop this foolishness of being the good guys all the time. A few dead coyotes and aliens hung on a fence will surely slow the migration. Shellpicker

Try crossing the border in Iran, China, Russia, or any number of countries ILLEGALLY and see what happens to you. If the U.S. and/or Mexican gov't won't do anything, it's up to the citizens. Get a high powered rifle and send a few rounds down range from long distance. I'm sure the attempts to cross the border will diminish drastically.

Art, Art, Art. If the Mexicans still had control of this country, it would be a third world sewer like Mexico is now. The reason it is not is because the white boys kicked there butts. Americans are just about to the tipping point because of sissy Bush giving this great country away. In the next war, we will kick your butts again. Remember the Alamo!

We have to be very smart about this whole matter. Mexico (its nation and people) is a different culture then the USA culture; we must defend and protect our culture and not jeopardize it or compromise it because of our economic need to find cheap labor. It used to be that only men, working men, would enter the USA for a period of time through the Bracero Program. Then one day, Mexicans and others south of our border got smart and decided to also bring their children; that is, free education, free food (food stamps and Wic), free prenatal care and maternity care, and other freebies meant, why not? Let's bring our families too. Moreover, if I have a child born in the USA, he or she will be my anchor baby. I can then legalize my status when he or she is 21 years.
We are very stupid; our benevolence always gets us into trouble. Mexican people do not want to Americanize; they want to continue with their backward culture, their way of doing things. Eventually, the USA will become a Mexico. Just mark my words.

What does Mexico have to pay for legalizing its 12 million people in the USA, who have gain benefit through free education, free medical services, free food, etcetera. Moreover, the average amount of taxes paid by illegals, because of their poor education, poor skills and low wages just does not add up. Moreover, this amnesty program is a Mexican Amnesty program -- it benefits mostly Mexicans compared to the other foreigners who have ingressed into the USA without inspection. Thus, I ask the American people, what does Mexico pay for this proposed Amnesty. How about North and South Baja California, including Cabo San Lucas, That is, let's add two more stars to the USA flag.

We are on the brink of another war with Mexico; just see it When the USA Men's national Soccer Team plays its own national soccer team, such as the game played in Tempe, Arizona just a few months ago, whe the USA once again defeated the Mexican team. Boy, were the Mexicans upset. You see America, they still have this animosity towards America because of what happened in 1848 (get those history books out America), and they can never forgive us for that theft of their land that included California. Most Hispanic leaders, such as Nativo Lopez and Jose Gutierrez also have the grudge. So, this Amnesty Program is another attempt by the subversives who want to gain ground in America with more Latino voters and more Latino inhabitants. Eventually, politically-speaking, these leaders believe they can gain control of the our southwestern states and for that matter much of the USA through simply the whims of our coward politicians in Washington who want to grant an amnesty without regarding the historical origins of our nation. We Americans must really think about this one.

El Presidente Jorge W. Bush invited people to join the Border Patrol. On his trip to Latin America countries, he pledged to make THEIR life better.

1) He signed the "North American Union" or the SPP agreement in 3/2005 to replace the USA-by 2010.
2) The DOT (Department of Transportation) announced to allow mexican trucks to haul in the US(takes effect in mid May 2007))

3)Illegals AND their extended family collect benefits after working 18 MONTHS. US citizens have to work 10 YEARS)

4) Our healthcare system is in shambles
5) Our school system is failing.
6) The employers want the illegals and not Americans-so they can pay less.

7) After Katrina, a staffing agency in Mobile hired 170 tent residents for $10.00 an hour. They were let go, because "the mexicans had arrived."
8) We have huge problems in this country and most of them are related to the illegal aliens.

9) There are 3 known al-queda camps at the Texas/Mexico border. They are training them in terrorism, spanish, give them mexican names and they are walking across our borders.

10)This president is not interested in enforcing ANY laws on illegal immigration. There are already existing laws but he keeps harping on him being sent "something" that he can sign.

11) that is why you have Border Patrol,
sheriff's and others being sacrificed-for the mexican government.

He took an oath to uphold OURe laws, OUR Constitution of OUR country. He should be treated as a traitor to the USA.

I think we get the picture after five posts of the same thing, lavampire...

I agree though. Sooner or later Mexico will be at war with the US again. It's not a matter of if, but when.

No way will we ever be at war with the Mexicans. There are entirely too many weenies of all ilk built up in our government - they had rather run than protect the nation.

Build the fence. Pardon the border patrol agents. Let them and our military personnel do their job. Enforce the laws. Give our border patrol ample firepower and let them use it without worrying about being sent to jail!!! Get tough on the illegals crossing the border - except when they are leaving America - but don't hold your breath for that.

Make the world right side up, like it used to be.
