(AP)  Roadside bombs in southern Afghanistan on Sunday left seven NATO soldiers dead, the alliance said, as its forces continued an anti-Taliban offensive in the world's most fertile opium-producing region.

One roadside bombing killed six NATO soldiers dead and wounded another, the alliance said. A separate roadside bomb killed one NATO soldier and wounded two, while a clash in the east left two Afghan guards and two militants dead, officials said.

NATO's International Security Assistance force did not identify those killed and wounded or specify the locations of the explosions.

The Taliban, meanwhile, claimed to have beheaded the kidnapped translator for an Italian journalist.

Ajmal Naqshbandi, a freelance journalist and translator, was kidnapped March 5 in southern Afghanistan along with journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo and a driver.

The driver was beheaded. Mastrogiacomo, who worked for the daily La Repubblica, was released March 19 in a much-criticized swap for five Taliban militants.

The Taliban made a similar demand in return for Naqshbandi's release.

"We asked for two Taliban commanders to be released in exchange for Ajmal Naqshbandi, but the government did not care for our demands, and today, at 3:05 p.m., we beheaded Ajmal in Garmsir district of Helmand province," said Shahabuddin Atal, who claimed to be a spokesman for regional Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah. The report could not be independently confirmed.

"When we demanded the exchange for the Italian journalist, the government released the prisoners, but for the Afghan journalist, the government did not care," Atal said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said police have no evidence yet that Naqshbandi was killed. Another Taliban spokesman who frequently speaks with the media, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said he was not aware of the killing.

La Repubblica's editor, Ezio Mauro, said in a statement on the paper's Web site that the newspaper staff was "living through hours of anguish" after news of the interpreter's purported execution. The statement said the paper had asked the Afghan government "to do everything it maintains is right and possible to safe his life."

The prisoner swap that secured Mastrogiacomo's release has been heavily criticized by Afghan lawmakers and foreigners working in Afghanistan as an incentive for more militant kidnappings.

In the eastern Paktika province, two Afghan guards were killed and five wounded during a four-hour firefight with Taliban militants near the border with Pakistan, according to the U.S.-led coalition, which is operating separately from the NATO-led force.

Militants fired mortars and a rocket on a coalition checkpoint in the village of Kakakhel. Troops returned fire and called in an airstrike, leaving two militants dead and three others wounded, the statement said.

Also Sunday, in the eastern Khost province, a gunman riding on the back of a motorcycle opened fire on Afghans working for ISAF, killing two of the men and wounding another, ISAF said in a statement.

And in the eastern Nangarhar province, a suicide car bomber blew himself up next to a U.S.-led coalition convoy, said Ghafor Khan, spokesman for the provincial police chief. One soldier sustained minor injuries, a coalition statement said.

The latest violence came days after more than 1,000 NATO and Afghan troops retook Sangin district in the opium-producing Helmand province.

The next step will be for NATO to hand over control of the area to Afghan security forces, Carl said, adding that NATO already has transported about 500 Afghan forces to the south.

The operation to retake the town from militants started late Wednesday and is part of NATO's largest ever offensive in Afghanistan, Operation Achilles, launched last month to flush out Taliban militants from the northern tip of Helmand province.

About 4,500 NATO and 1,000 Afghan forces are in and around Helmand province as part of Operation Achilles. In the last several months, Taliban militants and foreign fighters have streamed into the province, according to U.S. and NATO officials.

The Soviet Union attempted to occupy Afghanistan for about 12 years before they finally gave up.

How many lives are the European Union (and US) going to waste before learning the lesson?

Osama Bin Laden was originally sent to Afghanistan by the US to organize resistance ("terrorists") to fight against the Soviet Union's occupation.

Perhaps the Soviet Union (now Russia) is returning the favor.

What country will the U.S. be thrown out of first? Iraq or Afghanistan?

The Soviet Union collaped inder the weight of just one failed occupation effort. We have at least 2. What are our prospects.

To our Canadian neighbors: I like Canada and Canadians, but you guys are not very bright for assuming responsibility for the mounting U.S. defeat in Afghanistan. Wise up.

I've done that before. While I'm composing what I hope is an intelligent remark, someone else posts essentially the same comment.

Great minds, they say. . .

But, both points are equally valid and are based on the same historical events. The Soviet Union went bankrupt because they attempted to military occupy other nations.

The US obviously did not learn the lesson.

That has been the fate of all empires that chose to expand by military force.

Once the Roman Empire gave up the idea of military domination, it became the "Holy Roman Empire" (Catholic church) and currently has over one billion tax paying citizens, controls governments in many nations, provides little or no services to their taxpayers, and has very limited military abilities (other than through sending others to fight for them, at no cost to themselves).

Maybe the US should convert into the Holy American Empire and send priests instead of soldiers. (sarcasm intended, if not obvious)

it is time for the non muslim world to defeat evil islam once and for all

Is Islam Evil?

Given the recent worldwide attacks by Islamic terrorists, why isn't the question "Is Islam evil?" With few exceptions (Turkey, for example), Islamic countries are fascist, autocratic or theocratic, where women are subjugated and minorities persecuted. Islamic countries are rife with poverty and have been for centuries. Polls show that in many Islamic countries a majority of Muslims lionize the man responsible for the atrocities of September 11th and the terrorist gangs who routinely slaughter civilians in Israeli buses and restaurants. In Arab schools and on Arab television, children are taught the glory of becoming suicide bombers. Almost everywhere that Islam borders other cultures, there is violence.

The idea, then, that Islam is evil has far more plausibility than the idea that United States is evil. But merely, raising the question, "Is Islam evil?" provokes an instant, inevitable outcry: "Bigot!" "Racist!" "Zionist!" Indeed, the attempt to suppress debate on this question is so intense that few people in the mainstream will ask it.

I was actually composing an indirect response to it when I changed my mind. I am not going to feed a well known troll.

They (he? it?) are either being paid or are insane (obsessive-comulsive disorders). I sometimes wonder why anyone would waste his time repeating the same irrelevant garbage unless he is being paid to do so.

Which leads to the question as to why anyone would pay someone to do so?

Of course I have respect and sadness for the few Dutch that have lost their lives. However the Dutch master plan of action 'to make the taliban irrelevant!' wouldn't go down to well if they swaped location with US and British forces on the frontline.

Ali Sina, an ex-Muslim from Iran. He is the creator of Faithfreedom.org.

Yet I know that by eradicating Islam we can save the world from the dangers of a catastrophe that otherwise is looming over our heads and could cause more disaster than the 1st and 2nd World Wars combined. Eradication of Islam means restoring peace among humanity and civility, democracy and prosperity in the Muslim world.

yes NATO does have forces....

Does NATO have its own armed forces?

A: All member countries that participate in the military aspect of the Alliance contribute forces and equipment, which together constitute the integrated military structure of the
Alliance. These forces and assets remain under national command and control until a time when they are required by NATO a specific purpose (i.e. conflict or crisis, peacekeeping). NATO, however, does possess some common capabilities owned and operated by the Alliance, such as the AWACS early warning radar aircraft.

European Union members have 1.9 million soldiers

New force behind EU foreign policy
Fifty years since the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which launched the European community, world affairs correspondent Paul Reynolds looks at one of the EU's growth areas - foreign and security policy.
The European Union has quietly acquired what might be described as a standing army.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6441417.stm

EU Dreams Of Common Army
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the European Union should aim to create a common army within the next 50 years, an ambitious and at the same time controversial plan.
"We need to get closer to a common army for Europe," Merkel last week told German daily Bild.

Proponents of an EU army cite the greater efficiency for such a multinational force: The EU's member states have some 1.9 million soldiers -- 50 percent more than the United States -- and spend roughly $250 billion a year on military means, yet the effectiveness of these armies is one-tenth of the U.S. military.

We should all be VERY thankful for NATO right now. IF they were not fighting the REAL enemy in Afganistan, without a doubt the Taliban would have regained power there while we are off in Iraq don't what, no one knows. What frightens me though is that the VAST and I do mean the VAST Majority of the citizens of NATO Countries are really afraid of our Fascist Government and the Mental condition of Bush. Recent polls there CONSISTENTLY show that our leader is feared by them as much if not more than Bin Laden. The British citizens found Bush to be worse than the leader of North Korea. FASCIST NAZI ISLAM / PERFECT EXAMPLE OF FASCISM!!!

Fascist nazi islam is intent on killing or enslaving all non muslims......

The most notable characteristic of a fascist country is the separation and persecution or denial of equality to a specific segment of the population based upon superficial qualities or belief systems.

Simply stated, a fascist government always has one class of citizens that is considered superior (good) to another (bad) based upon race, creed or origin. It is possible to be both a republic and a fascist state. The preferred class lives in a republic while the oppressed class lives in a fascist state.

The primary point I was attempting to make was that the Soviet Union, which was also a union of separate states, provided a military occupation force that failed to "conquer" Afghanistan.

The European Union, NATO, "coalition of the willing" or whatever label is applied will most likely be equally unsuccessful.

And, there is little difference between the former (Soviet Union occupation) and the latter (US led occupation, currently referred to as "NATO occupation").

I have lived in Europe and do realize that most Europeans are very nationalistic and bristle at being referred to as if they were all the same, or, "European Union citizens."

That was not my intent.

In regards to the troll's irrelevant drivel, the only soldiers NATO has are those provided by member states. NATO has no independent military. There is no "NATO Army."

According to a recent poll of people in several nations world-wide, commissioned by the BBC, the US was third from the bottom on a list of nations considered to be a positive influence.

The only two nations that were viewed less favorably were Israel and Iran.

The Bush administration has single handedly destroyed this nation's ability to positively influence world opinion. Or, promote "American values."

II tend to agree. I'm English and my perception of Mr Bush is rather ugly. I fully supported the war against the Taliban in retaliation for 9/11 and the continued operations in Afghanistan to prevent their return. However the Iraq war is utter nonsense! We over here were lied to about the WMD being a direct threat to our military base in Cyprus. The reality seems to be that Iraq under Saddam actually had a stabilising effect in the region. Bush and our fool Blair have now made us look unjust and trigger happy to the rest of the world!
Iran would never have captured British sailors in the same waters if the Iraq conflict didn%u2019t exist because the world would trust the British version of events and Iran would look like clear aggressors.

I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this Government: 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.' We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us: to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Winston Churchill Speech in the House of Commons, after taking office as Prime Minister (13 May 1940)

"Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar." Winston Churchill This call and spur to the faithful servants of Truth and Justice was quoted by Churchill in his first broadcast as Prime Minister to the British people on the BBC - May 19, 1940, London.

I know all about us parvenus from the States who come over here and race around your old Cathedral towns with our cameras and Coca-cola bottles... I've had Germans and Italians tell me how politically ingenuous we are, and perhaps so. But we haven't managed a Hitler or a Mussolini yet. I've had Frenchmen call me a savage because I only took half an hour for lunch. Hell, Ms. Barham, the only reason the French take two hours for lunch is because the service in their restaurants is lousy. The most tedious lot are you British. We crass Americans didn't introduce war into your little island. This war, Ms. Barham to which we Americans are so insensitive, is the result of 2,000 years of European greed, barbarism, superstition, and stupidity. Don't blame it on our Coca-cola bottles. Europe was a growing brothel long before we came to town.

It is convenient for fascist nazi Islamic muslims to forget that the "Grand Mufti of Jerusalem" went to Germany as a guest of Hitler during WWII...and begged Hitler to find the "final solution" to the jewish problem. This same Grand mufti used his influence to raise Two Muslim SS Divisions in Yugoslavia (Kosovo) and Albaina. These divisions were responsible for the murder of almost 1 Million jews, Serbs and Gypsies.

This same Grand Mufti was the maternal uncle of Yassir Arafat! The Mufti's war continues today worldwide.

Why didn't Bush defeat the Taliban before invading Iraq? Wasn't the Taliban protecting Al Qaeda?

What did Iraq have to do with Al Qaeda?

What did Iraq have to do with Al Qaeda?

Posted by micma at 07:15 PM : Apr 08, 2007

......Answer: according to our President, that's Bush, Al Qaeda had NOTHING to do with Iraq......the problem with a corrupt liberal MSM wolfpack is the FACT that they don't care too much about religous conservative Republican presidents.
Now for the millionth time........the President took us into Iraq as part of his "preemptive stragegy" of not letting "danager" materialize. Iraq HAD WMD's because the UN inspectors took "inventory" of it in 1991 as part of Iraq's surrender in the Gulf War.......plus Clinton appointee George Tenent of the CIA .....told our president that it was a "Slam dunk" that Iraq had WMD's...........so our spy agencies told our President "wrong" information....... of course Americans never hear the "Mr. President it's a slam dunk that Iraq has WMD's........but our corupt liberal MSM wolfpack STILL repeats other slogan's like "Mission Accomplished" and "Stay the Course"......... The problem in American today is the "messenger" is absolutely corrupt.......and that "messenger" is America's corrupt liberal press...........really sad.

j-whitman,

YOU are the one that hasn't a clue.

Read what Clinton's Secretary of State said in 1997.

You go perception5...great job.

Try again.
-------------------

Consider that, under Saddam Hussein, Iraq has started two major wars, used poison gas and committed gross violations of international humanitarian law.

Consider that Iraq admitted producing chemical and biological warfare agents before the Gulf War that were sufficiently lethal to kill every man, woman and child on earth.

Consider that Iraq has yet to provide convincing evidence that it has destroyed all of these weapons.

Consider that Iraq admitted loading many of those agents into missile warheads before the war.

Consider that Iraq retains more than 7500 nuclear scientists and technicians, as well as technical documents related to the production of nuclear weapons.

Consider that Iraq has been caught trying to smuggle in missile guidance instruments.

And consider that, according to Ambassador Ekeus, UNSCOM has not been able to account for all the missiles Iraq acquired over the years. In fact, Ekeus believes it is highly likely that Iraq retains an operational SCUD missile force, probably with chemical or biological weapons to go with it.
