Huckabee Takes A Shot At Romney's Hunting

Former Arkansas Gov. Says American People Just Want To Hear The Truth

  • Video Political Roundtable

Politico's Mike Allen and Colbert King of the Washington Post join Bob Schieffer to talk about the suprising amount of money Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have raised for their campaigns.

(CBS/AP)  GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney was wrong to suggest he was a lifelong hunter even though he never took out a license, campaign rival Mike Huckabee said Sunday on Face The Nation.

"I think it was a major mistake," said Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor. "It would be like me saying I've been a lifelong golfer because I played putt-putt when I was 9 years old and I rode in a golf cart a couple of times."

"I think American people are looking for authenticity," Huckabee added. "Match their record with their rhetoric."

A message left Sunday with a spokesman for Romney was not immediately returned.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, was dogged last week about his hunting activities after he remarked at a campaign stop that he has been a hunter nearly all his life.

The next day, his campaign said Romney had gone hunting just twice — once as a teenager in Idaho and last year with GOP donors in Georgia. Officials in the four states where Romney has lived also told The Associated Press that he never took out a license.

Romney explained later that his staff was wrong and that he had hunted rabbits and other small animals for many years, mainly in Utah. Hunting certain small game there does not require a license.

On Sunday, Huckabee said Romney's comments undermined his credibility as a candidate.

Huckabee told Bob Schieffer, "The best thing to do is just say, 'Look, here's who I am. I support this issue, but I'm not particularly close to it."'

In contrast, Huckabee said, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, also in the 2008 race, showed his honesty by recently reaffirming he supported abortion rights.

"I think American people are looking for authenticity," Huckabee said. "They're looking for people whose statements today match what they said five, 10, 15, 20 years ago, and match with what they've done in office, match their record with their rhetoric."

Last week in South Carolina, Giuliani defended his record favoring the use of public money for abortions. South Carolina is early voting state dominated by conservatives who oppose abortion rights.

"Now, I disagree with him. I don't think we ought to use federal tax dollars for abortion, and I wouldn't if I were president," Huckabee said.

"But I thought it was at least a statement of extraordinary honesty and candor on the part of Giuliani that he would go into South Carolina, a very pro-life environment, and just say, look, this is who I am. I'm not going to change just to get your votes," he said.

Gore has been WAY ahead of the curve on MANY issues, and the best the right wing can do is attack him personally on made up hype.

Yup, he's so far ahead of the curve he's met himself coming back around again.

Just what is IN that Kool-Aid you're drinking?

Gore takes some credit for supporting the internet during it's infancy and right wingers make a federal case out of it. Bush claims credit for a non-existent economic boom and the right wingers are fixing the facts around the claim. Is the right wing populated by anyone other than gossip mongers? Gore has been WAY ahead of the curve on MANY issues, and the best the right wing can do is attack him personally on made up hype.

Global warming is a "hoax"? God is a HOAX. Get over it.

Another left wing website.

The internet was "created" by the US military and was called "ARPANET".

ARPANET first started on 29 October 1969.

Al Gore was in the US House of Representatives from 1977 to 1985.

Some "initiative"! End of Discussion!

Gore didn't create the internet and never claimed to. It's an old urban legend that he said it, when he did not.

My wife and I saw the newscast where he made that very statement. Go ahead and call us liars, PLEEEZE!

Ok, how about *I* call you a liar.

Check this link

Gore CLEARLY said the following "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

He didn't say he INVENTED the internet, just that he took initiative in creating it. He did introduce legislation in Congress that helped spur its creation. This is fact and cannot be disputed... you neoCONs keep spinning the TRUTH into something YOU want just to defame a Democrat.. give it a rest. We Dems have FACTS to back up what we say, you neoCONs only see and hear what you want to.

So, ago ahead, tell me that *I* am lying?

More importantly, will he fire missiles and deploy troops. We don't need any wimpy types running for the office. 43 got a good start on things, now let us have a 44 step up to the plate and settle scores.

"I haven't heard one say anything about Obama. They know they can not beat him in popularity nor wit. " [Posted by billysmith6]

Unfortunately the position of President of the United states is not a funny popularity contest - and Obama doesn't offer us much more than that.

Al Gore created the internet. 14% in the polls. Not sure if truth is out there for anyone, so far Obama seems to be truthful, I hope Fred Thompson gets in.

Romney makes me feel good about being from West Virginia. Now all the in-breeding jokes on the internet are directed at his family tree instead of us.

Huckleberry hound ought to go find some picnic baskets and bark about something else than hunting and abortion. HE does nothing to stop the war in Iraq? What kind of a guy is that, killing innocent women, and children on the streets of Baghdad. Ole Huck is a real F@!k if you ask me.

Ex-gov. Mike Huckabee is a joke and a great danager to the American people. This man help cause great harm to thousands of children in the State of Arkansas from 1994 to 2006. This man does not care about our safety and taking action to protect our environment. This man helped a local steel plant in Fort Smith, AR in many large scale violations of the Clean Water Act and large scale violations of the Clean Air Act. After I reported to EPA 6 in 2002 of how this steel plant had buried hazardous waste that could be radioactive waste, Gov. Mike Huckabee took action to help cover it up and then his office called me a home and told me to leave it alone because I will never get anywhere with it. I also pushed for action on the large scale waste water discharging by this steel plant and I got nothing from Mike Huckabee people. Now that he is gone and no longer the Gov. of Arkansas I getting or seeing some action on this steel plant. It looks like I will get the Clean Water Act violations stopped now that Mike Huckabee gone. This man is no good. I had death threats, lost my job because of Mike Huckabee and threats by Mike Huckabee's office over environmental issues in Arkansas.
