Iranian Diplomat: CIA Tortured Me

U.S. Official Describes Diplomat's Claims Of Torture During Two-Month Detention In Iraq As "Theatrics"

(AP)  An Iranian diplomat freed two months after being abducted in Iraq accused the CIA of torturing him during his detention, state television reported Saturday. The United States immediately denied any involvement in the Iranian's disappearance or release.

Jalal Sharafi, who was freed on Tuesday, said the CIA questioned him about Iran's relations with Iraq and assistance to various Iraqi groups, according to state television.

"Once they heard my response that Iran merely has official relations with the Iraqi government and officials, they intensified tortures and tortured me through different methods days and nights," he said.

Sharafi's comments came a day after 15 British sailors released by Iran said they had been subject to psychological pressure and coercion in captivity. The sailors were captured in the Persian Gulf on March 23 for allegedly entering Iranian waters and released Wednesday.

At the time of his disappearance, Iran alleged Sharafi had been abducted by an Iraqi military unit commanded by American forces — a charge repeated by several Iraqi Shiite lawmakers. U.S. authorities denied any role in his disappearance.

"The United States had nothing to do with Mr. Sharafi's detention and we welcome his return to Iran," said Gordon Johndroe, a White House spokesman who was with President Bush in Texas on Saturday.

"The Iranian propaganda machine has been in overdrive since they paraded the British sailors around on TV. This is just the latest theatrics of a government trying to deflect attention away from its own unacceptable actions," Johndroe added.

A U.S. intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said the CIA vehemently denies any role in the capture or release of Sharafi. The official dismissed any claims of torture, saying "the CIA does not conduct or condone torture."

In the report Saturday read by a newscaster, Sharafi, second secretary at the Iranian embassy in Baghdad, said he was kidnapped by agents of an Iraqi organization operating under CIA supervision and was badly tortured.

State television said signs of torture were still visible on Sharafi, who is being treated at an Iranian hospital. Images of Sharafi were not shown.

The television quoted Sharafi as saying he was approached by agents while shopping in Baghdad. The agents allegedly showed him Iraqi Defense Ministry identification papers and were driving U.S. coalition vehicles.

He said they took him to a base near Baghdad airport and interrogated him in both Arabic and English, questioning him mainly about Iran's influence in Iraq and assistance to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government and Iraqi groups. Sharafi did not provide additional details about his captors or their nationalities.

U.S. officials allege that Iran provides money and weapons to Iraqi Shiite militias.

After the initial interrogation, Sharafi said that his captors "softened their behavior and showed leniency to encourage" him to cooperate.

"I explained I was unable to do anything outside my legal responsibilities," Sharafi was quoted as saying. "Later, they released me under pressure from Iraqi government officials. They dropped me near the back of the airport."

Several of the British crew members said Friday that they had been blindfolded, bound, kept in solitary confinement and subjected to psychological pressure during their captivity. They said they were coerced into saying they had been in Iranian waters when they were detained, and one said he believed one of his colleagues had been executed on the second day of the ordeal.

Iran dismissed the crew members' news conference as propaganda — just as Britain had condemned the crew members' frequent appearances on Iranian TV during their captivity.

After reading many comments on this and other sites dealing with politics and the war, I can only conclude that we are a nation of mean spirited, vengeful, non-democratic hot heads, as well as a nation of wise, theological adept, humane individuals.

What is bothersome is that the first group in gaining in numbers and ignorance of American values.

Lets get all politicians, both American, Iranians etc...and relegious leaders as well, then put them in a room with two baseball bats and tell them only one meal will be served...then let us start all over again. The way I look at Bush lied, Iran has been lying, Iraq lied, Britian lied, Fidel Castro lies, Chavez lies, Mao lied, Ho Chi Minh lied, the Pope lied, the Muslim leaders lie, Bin Laden was born a liar, Regean lied, Clinton, oh my god he lied...you see the trend. All these people with power have gotten away with lying and nobody every catches them...newspaper reporters who are supposed to be bias take sides, Fox with the Republicans and CNN with the Democrats...This world is where it is because we as humans don't stop those who lie, we just re-elect them and blame the other side. God help us all.

Trent Lott makes the comment a couple of years ago that the U.S. would have been better off if Strom Thurmond would have won the presidency back in the 40's and the CIA torturing people surprises Americans? Strom's main campaign theme was seperation of the races.

Most Christian and other religions would say that torture is wrong, but the "Christians" currently running our country are a "Praise the Lord" and burn crosses type Christians. CIA torture is standard operating procedure for this mafia administration running America.

I do not automatically discount this person's claims because he is from Iran. The current U.S. administration has zero credibility, so who knows what to believe as fact?

Those occasions when our government is caught being dishonest or breaking the law, they can take cover behind the "national interest" and "threat of terrorism" lines of defense.

Whether this man is telling the truth or not should not be you main concern as an American.

The idea that this administration has reduced our nation (The United States of America) to the level that stories like this seem credible.

That is where the tragedy lies.

Six years ago, no one on the planet, in any country, would have given this a second look.

Re: "the CIA does not conduct or condone torture."

We know that this claim is false. We know that the CIA abducts people, takes them to secret prisons to be tortured- sometimes to death.

Our CIA is not only one of the largest terrorist networks of all time, torturing, murdering, and terrorizing people at their collective whim, but the above statement by this "unnamed intelligence official", is yet another example which seems to indicate that they are also bald-faced liars, with no sense of integrity.

Cowards+murderers torturers liars=CIA

Mirror

My friends, sometimes the most difficult thing about fighting evil is realizing that it actually exists, and then unambiguously and forcefully calling it what it is.

History shows time and time again that one of evils greatest strengths is its ability to disguise itself as good, or at least a temporary necessity, until that last fatal moment when its revelation becomes clear, indisputable, and inescapable.

So today let us take a clear and unadulterated look into the mirror at ourselves.

Just six years ago we were one of the most respected and admired defenders of democracy and human rights in history. Respected not only by our friends, but even begrudgingly by most of our enemies. In fact, even the fantastic power of our military paled in comparison to the overwhelming might of our moral authority.

Today we are a nation that operates secret prisons occupied by anonymous inmates, illegally abducted and held indefinitely without charge or representation. We are guilty of torture. We are guilty of murder. We are guilty of preemptive war of conquest. We are guilty of the wholesale surveillance of our population, suppressing all hope of privacy and free dissent. And we are guilty of disgracing our nation through the abandonment of even our most basic precepts of morality.

If this is not evil, then nothing we have ever fought against is evil, and nothing we have ever fought for is good.

I hope this is not true. You cant torture people and think its not going to catch up with you. Its the American people who will have to pay the price for such crimes. Not the government officials who actually committed the crimes. They will be hiding somewhere. I dont know if the Republican party will survive the Bush administration. Its hard to be patriotic with this tool in charge. If somebody assinated him i would be happy. Sad but true.

Being a prisoner 'IS" torture so therefore he is probably right about being tortured especially if he were held by known CIA agents. If someone were to fasten you down under a sharp blade that was 4 ft long 1 ft wide and 1/2 inch thick which was suspended by a rotten looking rope over your midsection and every little bit you would hear tiny snaps and noises from the rope, THAT would be torture!!!! Even though you didn't know that there was a very strong wire running through the middle of the rope where you couldn't see it and were in no danger of being 'vivisected' it would still be torture to you.. Torture comes in many forms, it is torture for me to watch people being blown up by stupid misguided acts of violence. Nobody cares if 'I' am tortured. So if you want me to feel that you have been wronged, then show me that you have not hurt someone else by direct action yourself or supplying aid and money to those that you knew would use it to hurt someone. Otherwise shut (expletive deleted) up about someone trying to stop other torture in the world. Those of you whom have been blown through windows with your entrails hanging out know what I am talking about. nuff said!!

Therefore I offer my most sincere best-wishes to those who wage holy Jihad against the infrastructure of the decadent, weak and Judaic-influenced societal infrastructure of the West. I send a message of thanks and well-wishes to the methods and works of groups on the Islamic front against the jew such as Al-Qaeda and Sheik Usama Bin Ladin, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and to all Jihadis worldwide who fight for the glory of the Khilafah and the downfall of the anti-life and anti-freedom System prevalent on this earth today.

pwrslm,

Do a little research on a man named David A. Passaro, a CIA contract interrogator, who tortured a man named Abdul Wali, to death, in Afghanistan, in June 2003.

There are many other examples.

You should be able to satisfy your curiosity on this topic with bit of investigation. If this is the first that you have heard of this issue, you may want to broaden your range of media sources. There are many articles available on this topic, with many different examples.

Put your unnecessary labels away. There is no such thing as a "hate America first" crowd. The people who are justifiably unhappy with the direction the Republicans have taken this country in are not traitors, wimps, or anti-American.

There is nothing wrong with questioning your government, especially when its actions are so severely questionable. You would do well to remember that blind patriotism is the worst kind of patriotism. It's not only useless, it's also dangerous.

He is quite correct. The CIA has a 'New program' that utilizes a series of "Physical & Mental inducements". This is nothing barbaric like 'TORTURE'. Just like MS_Windows if you rename it, you change its function.

Some of you wingnuts are too stupid to breath the air in fact you are taking up valuable air that others could be breathing. Too bad you do not have to think when you breath because you would be dead.

One person was right 6 years ago no one would have paid any attention to this now is is in the relm that can be believed. What a shame this country has come to this.

We must all reliaze that terror will continue becasue it breeds in hate. When we stop fearing them then we can move forward. The group that believes in killing and keeping this war going will not be appeased until they are removed from power.

By way of commedy, thou shalt do war:

Does a Muslim ever think - If they were still virgins when they went to heaven, just imagine how ugly they must be.

The celebration in Gaza of the first flight of the Palestinian Airlines was short lived. Crash inspecters determined it was not a good idea for the 63 celebrating passengers to shoot AK47's at the roof of the craft.

Once again Irainian officials accused the Mossad of an illegal kidnapping with the short disappearance of President Ahmadinejad on a visit to Qatar. He was later found when he mistook a dollhouse for his hotel while touring a Toys R Us in Doha. By way of commedy, thou shalt do war:

Al-Manar reported on the latest public speech by Hizbollah leader Hasan Nazrallah. In it he outlined the how Zionist forces and the Great Satan America caused the unsuccessful government take over from the Shia groups protests. He then spoke on the evils of western life styles and how the empires of satan will fall like tree with no roots. And finally finished off with how a tea of rose water, pine nuts, and artichokes is a good cure for constipation.

If the Iranian claims of torture get any credibility, Bonzo Bushit and the rest of the Bushshytes have only themselves to blame--the U.S. has 0(zero) stature to criticize, thanks to AG Gonzo, Dickless Cheney, and the rest of the torture defenders. Your president has blown our moral authority. Charges that might have once seemed laughable are now believed, because, well, they might be true. So don't come blubbering online about how mean and nasty the Iranians are. Thanks to the neocons, they look like a good match for the US government. Thanks, a$$holes!

I don't have any difficulty in believing the story. I imagine he was. Bush has lowered US standards to the same as any terrorist nation on the planet! In fact, we don't have much room to complain about any other nations supporting terrorism! It's what all of you right wing fascist's wanted! So quit your whining because the news media is finally reporting the news as it is instead of being censured by der Fuhrer (Bush)!

Define 'torture'.

didntinhale - your comment makes no sense. If our troops come home, the muslims will "return to their natural state of beheading eachother"?! In your book, isn't that a win-win situation??

And where is the difference between a group of radicals who kill in the name of the religion, and their home country which by and large would denounce the activities of their radical lot?
