Activists To Host Easter Bomb Hunt

While children will be participating in a Washington tradition next week rolling Easter eggs on the White House lawn, anti-war and human rights activists will be inviting others to join in an unusual new activity: an Easter cluster-bomb hunt.

Fake cluster bombs made by children will be scattered around Lafayette Park, north of the White House. The colorful objects represent the deadly ordnance that releases several hundred smaller bombs that might explode or linger on the ground as land mines. They are often found and picked up by children, who are attracted by their small size, shape and bright colors, activists say.

"Obviously, we're trying to spoof a little bit what will be happening on the South Lawn," Brian Hennessey of the Vineeta Foundation, the lead sponsor of the cluster-bomb hunt, told The Washington Post. "We're not trying to hit kids over the head with this; we want them to have fun. We also want to bring attention to the fact that our munitions cause a lot of death and destruction to civilians, especially children."

While thousands of civilians have been killed or maimed by such weapons, they pose a hazard to the military as well. Unexploded U.S. cluster bomblets in Iraq have killed or injured at least eight U.S. troops, as reported by USA Today, and unexploded bomblets in Afghanistan have hampered mine-sweeping operations and slowed military actions against the Taliban.

According to the Red Cross, dormant bombs left in southern Lebanon by Israeli forces last year have caused more than 200 deaths and injuries in the months since Israel withdrew.

In February 46 nations adopted a declaration calling for a treaty banning cluster bombs by 2008. The treaty would "prohibit the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of those cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians," the declaration said. The U.S., China and Russia have refused to sign a land mine treaty and oppose the initiative on cluster bombs.

Other event co-sponsors include the Coalition for Justice and Accountability, Voters for Peace, and Code Pink.

Simply horrible. Imagine the honesty of letting our children know that there are kids around the world getting blown up by these devices. We should demand that they remain as ignorant of the facts as we are. Heaven forbid that anyone should present the cold hard facts about the world. Let us continue to deny any fact period. Hey it works for the Bush team. As newscasters you should be investigating such news stories rather than continuing to act as if something is wrong with the people who would promote these protests. I see nothing wrong with using children to protest problems in the world. They are used every day to promote the "feel good stories" why should the truth be handled differently. Maybe you should be asking the current administration how come they are still deploying these devices around the world.

And as an after Easter cluster bomb hunt, give the kids their choice of drinks such as beer, whiskey, or wine coolers, along with pretzels, deep fried chicken, onion rings. mushrooms, with pure beef patties from Micky-D's, or perhaps Shake-n-Steak burgers complete with fat drippings. or white castle rat burgers, cooked in pure lard. ummmm ummm ummmm, toasty.

"Brian Hennessey, a spokesman for the Vineeta Foundation, a group sponsor, said the event aims to be humorous and fun for kids"
I would like to see Brian Hennessey explain to the children,in other parts of the world, who deal with REAL cluster bombs how children and cluster bombs are to be viewed as humorous and fun!!!

This is the *** dumbest thing I have ever heard. The activists just have to brainwash the little ones and deprive them of a wholesome childhood experience? Good heavens, some folks should NOT be allowed to be parents, they are just too stupid.

Want to bet how long this sentiment stays on CBS News?

Perhaps we should look at the countries (and religions) who have the tendancy to start wars, and look at ways to prevent a war from ever starting!

It would save a whole lot more people than just banning a specific type of weaponry!

Banning cluster bombs is like preventing an alcoholic from drinking Tequilla, but everything else is okay?!
