The conflict wears on as the nation struggles to rebuild.

(CBS/AP)  Four British soldiers were killed Thursday in an ambush in southern Iraq, and Prime Minister Tony Blair said Tehran's support for Iraqi militants could lead Britain "to reflect on our relationship with Iran."

The four British deaths — the biggest loss of life for British forces in more than four months — came as 15 British sailors and marines arrived home 13 days after they were seized by Iran off the Iraqi coast and held captive.

"Just as we rejoice at the return of our 15 service personnel, so today we are also grieving and mourning for the loss of our soldiers in Basra," Blair said.

In other developments:

  • The U.S. military reported the deaths of eight soldiers around Baghdad.

  • A U.S. Army helicopter went down south of the capital, but all nine people aboard survived, officials said.

  • (AP Photo/Asaad Mouhsin)
A car bomb struck a Sunni Muslim television station in Baghdad's western neighborhood of Jami'a on Thursday, wounding at least six guards, a spokesman for the political party that owns the station said. Shortly after the explosion, the station went off the air, although a photo of a mosque with readings from the Quran, the Muslim holy book, appeared for a brief time.

  • Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Wednesday fired two senior members of his movement after they met with the top U.S. military officer in Iraq, a lawmaker close to the anti-American cleric said. The two were having dinner at the home of a former prime minister Monday when Gen. David Petraeus arrived; they failed to leave the room when the American walked in.

  • (AP)
A bomb struck an oil pipeline Thursday, cutting off supplies and causing a huge fire in southern Iraq near the border with Kuwait, an official said. The pipeline carries oil from surrounding fields to storage tanks in Basra for export to the Gulf region, according to the official with the South Oil Co. But he said the tanks were full and export supplies had not yet been affected.

"It is far too early to say that the particular terrorist act that killed our forces was an act committed by terrorists that were backed by any elements of the Iranian regime," he said. "But the general picture, as I said before, is that there are elements at least of the Iranian regime that are backing, financing, arming, supporting terrorism in Iraq."

The British patrol struck a roadside bomb and was hit by small-arms fire about 2 a.m. in the Hayaniyah district in western Basra, 340 miles southeast of Baghdad, British military spokeswoman Capt. Katie Brown said.

A Kuwaiti civilian interpreter was also killed and a British soldier was seriously wounded, Brown said.

The explosion left a crater three feet deep. Hours after the attack, the helmet of a British soldier lay in the street alongside dozens of spent shells.

Police said the British patrol was en route from detaining 1st Lt. Haidar al-Jazaeri of the Interior Ministry's Major Crimes unit. The police would not say why al-Jazaeri had been detained.

The deaths raised to 140 the number of British forces who have died in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion, with 109 killed in combat.

Four British forces were killed Nov. 12 in an attack on a Multinational Forces boat patrol on the Shatt Al-Arab waterway in Basra, Iraq's second-largest city. Ten Britons died in the Jan. 30, 2006, crash of a Hercules transport plane north of Baghdad.

"President Bush said Tuesday Democrats are failing their responsibility to the troops and the nation's security by leaving for their own recess after passing bills to fund the war that contain timelines for American withdrawal."

The stupid lazy sonofab1tch said that as he was on his way to another vacation: "His schedule calls mostly for quiet time in Crawford through the weekend."

Bush is keeping the war going to save face (for himself).

    No other reason.

He will lie like a rug and say that it's for the nation's security, or the cause of freedom, or "to support the troops."

But he is only keeping the war going to save his own face.

4 more soldiers dead, more injured and it doesn't even make the headline news anymore! Why are the American people not being told of the daily deaths of our soldiers?? I wonder how those families feel to know that the sacrifice of their son or daughter gets hidden behind other news!

Russia spends 1/10th of the US on military. Yet they could whip your a$$. Why would that be?

The only reason no one overthrows the US, is because no one wants you. The only nation to ever have 2 million in jail since Nazi Germany. Soon it will excede the unemployment rate. Each state has and average of 1,500 homocides per year. That's 75,000 per year, nation wide. You are nuts!

I find it absolutely amazing that the truth and policy of the Democratic party of yesterday is the lies and deceit of the Republican Party today.
"The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world. The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people."
    -President Clinton, December 16, 1998
"Iraq is a long way from Ohio, but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."
    -Madeleine Albright, February 18, 1998
"Imagine the consequences if Saddam fails to comply and we fail to act. Saddam will be emboldened, believing the international community has lost its will. He will rebuild his arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. And some day, some way, I am certain he will use that arsenal again, as he has ten times since 1983."

    And Still More:
"In the next century, the community of nations may see more and more the very kind of threat Iraq poses now -- a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction ready to use them or provide them to terrorists, drug traffickers or organized criminals who travel the world among us unnoticed. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow by the knowledge that they can act with impunity, even in the face of a clear message from the United Nations Security Council and clear evidence of a weapons of mass destruction program."
    -President Clinton, February 17, 1998
"As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
-Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, December 16, 1998
The Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 (sponsored by Bob Kerrey, John McCain, and Joseph Lieberman, and signed into law by President Clinton) states:
"It should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime."
-Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, September 29, 1998

    And the kicker:

INDEPENDANT CONFIRMATION ON THE WHITE HOUSE INTELLIGENCE REPORTS:
"The intelligence which the president shared with us was in line with what we saw in the White House."
    -----Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, 2003

    ONE SHORT YEAR LATER:
"The president led us into the Iraq war on the basis of unproven assertions without evidence; he embraced a radical doctrine of pre-emptive war unprecedented in our history; and he failed to build a true international coalition."

The same rhetoric that Bush used to get us into war with Iraq is the same rhetoric that the DEMS spouted in the 90's. I just find it strange that it was honest in 1998 and lies in 2004. Can you explain how truth turned to lies?

Thankfully, Senator Dullard has already announced his intention to retire. At this point, this seat is a virtual dem lock the way CO's been swinging lately. Until then, though, no amount of writing (unless it's on a check, maybe) seems able to change this man's mind on anything.

I never stated that I supported the war in Iraq nor the invasion in the first place, did I? I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the hawks of '98 being the doves of '07 and liberals refuse to call them on it.

What I take from your rediculous statement is that they said it but they didn't really mean it and that's OK. I raised to believe that you say what you mean and you mean what you say. Not propogandic flip flop to appease voters.

Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

"I don't give a *******," Bush retorted. "I'm the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way."

"Mr. President," one aide in the meeting said. "There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution."

"Stop throwing the Constitution in my face," Bush screamed back. "It's just a ******* piece of paper!"

    BUSH, THE BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN!!

Sorry for the soldiers, MAIMED CAN BE WORSE THAN DEAD as McCLELLAND WOULD AGREE - BUT NINE BLACK HAWK HELICOPTERS LOST IN 2007 equals 9.5 MILLION DOLLARS times 9 = 100 MILLION DOLLARS - This war that was supposed to end in HOURS has MAIMED, KILLED HUNDREDS OF THOUSAND U.S. SOLDIERS and IRAQI CITIZENS - to the tune of $5 billion dollars add to that the price of AFGHANISTAN - When Kerry STATED IN 2002 THAT THIS WAR WOULD COST 200MILLION DOLLARS IN THE FIRST YEAR - Georgie RIDICULED ALL WHO THOUGHT THIS AMOUNT POSSIBLE - WISH THE U.S. COULD GET BACK FOR ALL GWs MISINFORMATION that got the U.S. here today!
    Disbelief...Sadness...Please Help the U.S. Amen

To dallison7...I am not saying you are wrong but could you quote the authority you cite for Bush's paper on the Constitution. I have a conservative radio friend that I want to confront it with. Please cite first hand authority if you can. Thanks.

As to the Brits....They did handle the 15 sailor/marine crisis well. But they have announced plans to withdraw 1/2 of their troops from Iraq Basra area and withdraw the rest in 2008 because Basra was relatively "quiet". I wonder what today's Brit death toll will do to their plans.

Actually this report is true and has been reported by many sources. I first heard it on MSNBC (Pat Buchanan was bitc*hing about it and he 's about as conservative as you can get), but it's not hard to find it on the internet.

Drunk or stoned somewhere. Whoever Rove assigned to keeping them and their trust fund brat behavior hidden from the public eye is doing a pretty good job of it. Except of course for several months ago when they were thrown out (excuse me...asked to leave...) Argentina for partying too much and embarrassing themselves. You know back in the day I used to party a lot and was even thrown out of a bar or two, but I never heard of anyone who partied so hard they got thrown out of a whole country!

Why don't they ever report the good things going on in Iraq?

Al-Basrah just installed new extention cords and now they have 3 amps power per block.

Arb%u012Bl has worked with US military construction engineers, and have invented a rolling gas can for much easier trips back to the car if you run out of gas.

Dh%u012B Qar has just recieved a new version of the Trophy Systems from Israel that works on fruit and vegetable stands.

Babil and genetic engineers from South Africa are close to testing new flame proof dates.

That's OK, Big Brother Bush has lot's of buddies in the war contracting business who'll be happy to sell the US as many helicopters as the Iraqi insurgents can shoot down...at a nice profit margin of course. I mean we mustn't forget that profit is the reason Bush started this whole war after all. As for the crews that die in these "crashes"? Well Bush can always get back on TV, wave the flag and try again (as he's been doing the last few days) to connect this war for profit in Iraq with 9-11 and then he'll always convince a few more teary-eyed supporters to send their kids of to die in his criminal enterprise.
