Andy: Let's Have A Queen

The following is a weekly 60 Minutes commentary by CBS News correspondent Andy Rooney. It was originally broadcast on April 8, 2007.

It would be interesting to have another presidential election now. Four years is a long time between elections.

The Constitution says that a president's term in office shall be four years. Two or three might have been better but we don't use three much for anything.

No one can say how many votes President Bush would get if we did have another election tomorrow. For all we know he might win in a landslide. I don't think so but he might.

Democrats control Congress now even with a Republican President. We don't have any system like the British have for removing their prime minister if he and Parliament disagree.

The British have a king or a queen that we don't have either. We don't approve of royalty. The Queen does a lot of the dirty work for her Prime Minister. Goes to a lot of formal functions, reviews troops, wears all her queen clothes. Elizabeth has been Queen of England for 55 years now.

Imagine having George W. Bush as President for 55 years!

Maybe we should get ourselves a queen though. I'll bet President Bush would like to have one.

For one thing, he has to waste so much time every day posing for pictures. A queen in The White House could do all this ceremonial stuff for him, have pictures taken with dignitaries, pose with them on the front porch of The White House.

I'll bet the British pay a fortune for the Queen's clothes. Women's clothes cost more than men's and she always wears something different. I wonder what the queen does with the dress she wore yesterday.

President Bush always looks well-dressed. We called someone in The White House and they told us that the president pays for all his clothes himself.

Now, that doesn't seem fair really. He wouldn't have to have so many suits if he weren't president. I think we should buy the president's clothes for him. He'll probably call and thank me for that.

The president dresses a lot more casually at his ranch in Texas. Always looks like a cowboy. Of course a lot of people wish President Bush would go to Texas, put on his cowboy clothes, and stay there.

The Queen, she is so cool. America don''t approve of much now does she. Anyway all America knows is warfare. Fighting with others to rape their lands. A greedy nation bent on oil to drive. Let the ladies run things as we have to run our home.rear the child, in short wear many hats. Men move yer ways are not working.

We already have had two attempts to establish a monarchy in this country: the Kennedy family and our current Bush nightmare. We now have the Clinton''s working the same game plan.

I believe we should have an amendment in the Constitution that prohibits more than one family member from holding office higher than a state legislator during simultaneous or consecutive terms. Better yet, they need to be barred from holding office for a minimum of three terms from any family member. That would include family by blood or marriage.

We formed this country in protest against a monarchy and we have political interests trying to install one on the sly. We need to keep this country a democracy.

Of course a lot of people wish President Bush would go to Texas, put on his cowboy clothes, and stay there.

I don''t care how young you might or might not be - to refer someone who has seniority on you to a "home" is severely ignorant on your part and anyone else who wants to spew your negative rants on someone who has attained an age you may never be so fortunate to see...

I think with such a narrow mind about age - you will never be so lucky to live the life Andy has been so fortunate to enjoy...

I don''t know if you are aware of "homes" but there are many young people who end up there due to their inability to use their brain...

You see, I have been here for 45 years and my first impression regarding "the" president here was/is that he is already regarded as royalty.
Consequently some feel they are entittled to own the country: forgetting that it belongs to "WE THE POEOPLE"...

I happen to like Andy''s commentaries - and to those who want to bash him for his humor need to find another story to read - say - go to the Fox channel''s website (for those who are so... "Pro-Bush"...

For kimmyj63 - I can''t believe you would prefer to see us more vulnerable to terrorists than to worry about Clinton''s getting caught - doing what so many Presidents before him surely did (and who knows if Bush doesn''t have his woman on the side???)...

Men in power (and many women) - are known to have their "secret" alliances... Whether physical, emotional, or both...

If Bush got caught with Monica - you would have found some good excuse for him to have done it (just as so many of you did for his blatant use of Cocaine...)
