Couple Fights To Name Baby "Metallica"

Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.

Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their 6-month-old child after the legendary rock band.

"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."

Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."

Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."

The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.

The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.

"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.

hey, I met a guy named Rod N. Reel the other day and a long time ago there was Rose Bushey and her brother Thorn. To each his own, when the baby grows up she can chose to be called Mettie or Talli or something shorter. It is the parents right to chose the name, and I agree, they should check on copyright law or something......

I don't think the government should be able to decide the kid's name either. That's a separate issue from whether the parents are cruel morons for naming their kid Metallica, though.

Is she going to have a brother Saxon and a sister Megadeth? Or maybe the twins, Twisted and Sister? Spare me.

I think the couple should be able to name THEIR child whatever they want not be limited to what officials think is suitable for a little girl. There will always be a conflict of interest when it comes to naming our children thats why we are all different in our own ways. If we weren't everyone would be named Jennifer or Michael. If anythiung it should be up to the band to make the decision IF it falls under the copywrite terms and conditions not the the County Administrative Court.

Those parents need a boot to the head. Why would they curse their kid with a name that guarantees her years of mockery?

Parents like this are idiots, thinking that they're doing something "cute" with no thought for the kid. I went to school with a "Justin Case" and a "Miles N. Miles". Both of them resented their parents for saddling them with jokes in poor taste for names.
