The Web site reports that Alicia Estrada, the assistant professor of Central American Studies at the university, allegedly accused the "Apocalypto" director of racially stereotyping the Mayans in his movie.
She asked him if he had read a book about the culture before making the film. Estrada apparently persisted on the issue to which Gibson responded, "Lady, f--- off."
"(Estrada) was questioning the sources of the movie and he was really upset and using profanities," Douglass Carranza, a professor who attended the event, told The ShowBuzz on Friday.
Gibson was arrested last summer for driving while intoxicated. Controversy erupted when he spewed anti-Semitic slurs at the arresting officer.Photos: Mel Gibson
The Web site said that the actor-director was fuming when members of the Mayan community protested about how they were portrayed in the epic.
Carranza said Estrada and other members of the Mayan community were escorted out of the class when the incident occurred.
"There are times that he will be exposed to academic critique and he didn't like that, apparently, and he was upset," said Carranza. "He needs to apologize not only to the professors, to the Central American Studies program, but also to the Mayan community for saying things that are inappropriate."
Carranza, the coordinator of the Central American Studies program at the university, said he did not know specifically what expletives Gibson used. But he said Estrada wants an apology.
Estrada could not be reached for comment.
Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, told TMZ: "This person was a heckler who was rude and disrupted the event, so much so that the event organizers had to escort her out."

- "whitewoman" brings into the arguement the supposition that anyone (like myself) that dislikes this racist, false Aussie 'actor' is somehow against his churchly, God-fearing family and race.
Gibsdon was born and raised in Schenectady, New York. He left there as a lad when his father decided he didn't want to pay income taxes anymore...and that's how he ended up in Australia. He is NOT an Aussie, yet he allows this misconception to flourish.
His first religious turdfest of a movie, Passion, was little more than his Father's masturbatory excercise in dwelling on the beatings and sufferings of Jesus on the day he died. It was excruciating to watch and unintelligible...the fake-Aramaic 'dialog' was a laugh.
His racist rant last Summer proved the protestations he made about NOT being anti-Israeli were as false as his claims of origin.
And now we forget him...now we stay home when another ******** 'entertainment' comes out that he directed or appears in.
His father and he are building a proto-'catholic' cathedralk for their own strange brand of religion in Southern California...maybe "whitewoman" and her deluded. toothless tribe of Cracker inlaws can help them reach their goal monetarily.
I will have no part on making Gibson or ANY racist piece of ********* any richer. - Reply to this comment
- This situation is being spun and "handled." Estrada is an expert on the Maya, not a "heckler" as Gibson's publicist is claiming. The microphone was being passed around for audience questions and comments and, at worst, she held onto the microphone too long. We've all seen that before, and it is admittedly a breach of microphone ettiquette but her questions were valid ones, not "heckling."
The truth remains that Apocalypto confuses the Mayans with the Aztecs, portrays the Mayans as raiding villages rather than getting their sacrifices off of highly-ritualized battlefields, and hilariously paints the Spanish as liberators rather than conquistadores. Apocalypto is an apology for the Spanish Conquest, with its enslavement and forced conversion of Native Americans - not to mention its introduction of African slavery to America. - Reply to this comment
- No apologies- she the EXPERT, she didn't need to ask, she CHOSE to heckle in a public fourm... if it were academics she wanted, she should have addresses the academics; but, no, so now she wants to complain because she didn't get the answers she wanted to hear- sounds like her intent all along was to casue a stir... ok, her 15 minuts of fame are over, Mels fame will continue on, his STAR is untarnished in my opinion... if they have issues, then they should hold their own fourm, and discuss it ad-nauseum....

- After reading all the negative remarks about Mel Gibson, I sense either jealousy or hatred of the man, who is a good, talented, spiritual White man. If these venomous remarks were made by white people, I think the First And Second World Wars of Whites killing and hurting each other should have taught us Whites instead to unite, love, and praise one another, not destroy physically, mentally or verbally, such a good man as the wonderful, voted most *** Man, Godly, Mel Gibson. If these negative remarks are by non-whites, than you abuse a white man, Mel Gibson, you slander Whites that for 500 years have built the country you live in and yet you take for granted, and having the audacity and effrontery of biting the White Hand that feeds you, like mad dogs you foam at the mouth with destructive words against a kind and good White man. If we don't save our White male, our country will turn into a third world country in a matter of years.

- Mel Gibson is a fake Aussie ******** that needs to be ignored for his own good. If he and his whacked-out Old Man want to build their 'cathedral' in Southern California, let them do it with their own money.
This pathetic loser actually thinks he's Martin Riggs. - Reply to this comment
- Two wrongs don't make a right!! Mel Gibson could use communication skills and anger management classes. These situatins are going to arise and he needs to address them appropriately.
Estrada could also use communication skills classes. To move forward in a positive society, both parties need to take responsiblity, not blame. - Reply to this comment
- he needs to appologize to the offending party.People has the right to express on how they are portray in the movie.

- Gibson drops the F-Bomb, and apparently an international community is in an uproar?
Who cares? This Estrada is lucky he didn't go further. - Reply to this comment
- What did he say that was inappropriate to the whole Mayan culture? He told one woman to F**k off. And as for the movie that I didn't see. I don't believe everything I see in movies. They are only entertainment and should never be taken seriously. No one has the
"right" not to be offended. - Reply to this comment

Quit expecting apologies. They mean nothing if they aren't given freely. He lost his temper. Is she going to apologize for continually interupting him? - Reply to this comment
- He was a guest at a film class. The "expert" kept interupting him.
I consider that to be disrespectful not only to Mr. Gibson but to the others in the class. Were her "questions" during a question and answer period? She exercised her free speech and she got a taste of it back. - Reply to this comment
- When I spoke of Mel Gibson being drunk and saying racial slurs, I meant when he was pulled over by the cops, not this incident.

- Good for him. People go to do no more that trt and cause trouble. He should have said a lot more. Like Go F yourself and your hole famely to and any one else that know s you dumd ***.

- Why would he need to apologize to the entire "Mayan community" because he told one lady to 'f*** off'? That's ridiculous.

- Given the venue, they were both out of line. Which came first - the chicken or the egg? From this reporting, we really cannot know. So many, so quick to judge with only biased facts reported. Hmm - rather puts me in mind of a similar situation having to do with a current war.

- How about everyone just pick out their stone and decide who will be the first to throw it. Personally, I am not perfect enough to do that.
I did not care for Mel Gibson one way or the other until I saw "Passion of the Christ". He now holds my respect for the way he portrayed how Jesus really did suffer. And die. - Reply to this comment
- Funny. And interesting. The article never said that Gibson was drunk during the confrontation yet 4 out of 10 posters referred to him as being drunk. Just goes to show you what his image has become.
I don't particularly like Gibson, but I don't care for hecklers either.
OBTW: markjessup is a troll, a flamer. He makes the same comment on every comment board he gets on. He will same the same thing about me. Oh well... I suspect he's the victim of a molestation, or perhaps, a molester. - Reply to this comment

You are right people do say foolish things when they are drunk. They also speak what they feel and it is what he spoke that is the problem. Do you think he would have spoken racist slurs if he wasn't a racist person? - Reply to this comment
- Since none of us was there, heard what was said by either person or what let up to his (supposedly) telling the woman to f--- off, what business does anyone have passing judgment? For all we know, she spent 10 minutes solid yelling "a$$hole" at him.
We don't know the story, and the story above doesn't tell it. And besides, at the end of the day, who cares? So someone heckled a speaker and he swore at her. So what? - Reply to this comment
