Indiana Police Accuse 30-Year-Old Father Of Knifing 11-Month-Old Son, Tossing Infant Out Of Car

(AP)  A man accused of stabbing his 11-month-old son in the back with a kitchen knife, then throwing the boy out a car window, was caught Friday and will face attempted murder charges.

Kevin Chandler, 30, was captured about 10:45 a.m. in a Lawrence home, an Indianapolis suburb, by police acting on an anonymous tip from a woman.

Officers met no resistance when they arrived to arrest him, said Sgt. Dale Horstman of the Speedway Police Department.

Speedway Police have charged Chandler with attempted murder and aggravated battery in the attack on his son, Devon Chandler.

Chandler was taken to the Lawrence police station and likely would be transferred to downtown Indianapolis to be booked, Speedway police said.

Police say Chandler stabbed Devon and then dumped the boy out the window of the parked car and onto the pavement Wednesday night. Devon was conscious and the knife was still in his back when he was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The baby underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children and was recovering in good condition Friday, police said.

Police believe the incident occurred as Chandler and the boy's mother, Angela Limbrock, were preparing to leave Limbrock's apartment in Speedway, on the west side of Indianapolis, to visit a friend.

The couple were arguing before Limbrock realized the child's car seat was still inside. She handed the baby to Chandler, who was in the back seat, and went to retrieve the seat.

As she got out of the car, she heard Chandler swear at the child and turned around to see him throw Devon out, according to a police report.

Chandler fled the scene, sparking a search that included the FBI and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Limbrock and Chandler, who are not married and do not live together, have two children. Their other child, a 5-year-old boy, was in the car with Chandler at the time of the attack but escaped before his father drove off.

Chandler has been arrested several times for crimes including domestic battery, auto theft and driving while intoxicated, records show. He served time in an Indiana prison for cocaine possession and carrying an unlicensed firearm near school property, records show.

In 2005, police arrested Chandler after he allegedly kicked Limbrock in the head and body.

the reason there is so much crime and abuse is because there is no punishent. we give criminals attorneys at taxpayer expense to defend them - free. prosecuters (paid by taxpayers) want to "make a deal". and if the judge (paid by tax payers) is a wimp he'll give them probation. if a sentence is given then we'll end up housing them, feeding them, clothing them, giving them medical & dental care - free (paid for by taxpayers). then the parole board (paid by taxpayers) will let them out early because they've "been good" and we don't have enough room to keep them because we have too many criminals. the only people taking a beating with our "system" is the taxpayer & the victim. all the criminal got was a free ride. is it any wonder this is all we continually get? it's time for americans to demand a change in the "system and the way justice is meted out.

"a little reawlity check for you people who condemn that girl for hooking up with and staying with an abusive man" A little reality check for you toldyouso21, I've also worked with abused women, adults of alcoholic parents, and adults who were victimized as children, so I know the dynamics. However, unlike you, I have a greater insight because I don't assume each case is identical.
The problem with some caseworkers they want to always keep women in a role of victimization, which allows them to repeat the pattern of picking an abuser over and over, in repetition.

Women have to take responsible for their fate and reconize this behavior so that they will stop selecting men who are abusive. Because this problem is much bigger than the abuser, it is some women who knowingly choose a man who has the propensity to abuse. Stop looking at this in "black and white"!!!

There are a lot of women who are attracted to "bad boys", thugs, etc., and have full knowledge of his past offenses, but choose to engage in the relationship anyway.

All women in abusive relationships are not ignorant of the fact, as a matter of record some choose "dangerous men" out of some perverse excitement. Being with a thug or criminal will make them feel safe and secure, some women have stated. Likewise, some women know these men they are selecting have been to prison for drug possession, murder, rape, and even child molestation, and they still choose to move forward in the relationship.

I was just blessed with my first boy. It's inconceivable to me how someone could do this, and that%u2019s because I am not an unstable member of society. I often thought about my rights in this country (a country I'm proud of,) and all the aspects of life and law that this government of ours regulates. And yet I keep reading about the children who have slipped through the cracks and end up getting thrown from a car with a knife in his back. What happens now? CPS pays closer attention to minor situations to make it seem as though they are doing what needs to be done. These are just my opinions.

Police often know a man is violating a restraining order but say they can do nothing unless they catch him in the act or he hurts the girl or children. Men often threaten the lives of the kids or the woman if she tries to leave and back it up with torture and fists.

My mother was physically abused for years by her boyfriend (an ex-husband who'd forced himself back into her life) and it always seemed as if our hands were tied. We knew he was beating her, but, as adult children the police never listened to our complaints and threats of violence (and in one case violence itself) back fired. He was an ex-convict and knew how to play the system. Besides he'd beaten her self esteem down to the point where she couldn't pull away from him. Finally she found help from a counselor at the YMCA who helped her through the whole legal process. He got her into a safe house (she was out of touch with all of us for 6 long months) and found a way for the police to move him out. She went back to school while in the safe house and got a great job working for the Social Security Department. It's been nearly 30 years since then, she married a wonderful guy (who passed away last year) and the last she saw of her tormentor was in a soup line while she was driving to work one morning. It's hard, but it can be done.

Well said, though I must point out that it would be impossible to monitor or regulate parenting since people do not need permits to spread their legs, do not have to get prenatal care and unlike education, words, exercises and skits do not teach or counteract adverse behavior and poor relarionship skills. /this means that somethings cannot be taught, they have to be experienced--since many people have poor child rearing themselves, they are not apt to be receptive to, care about or practice anything learned in a class. Sort of like remedial drivers training--it seldom influences the reckless driver, it just creates more beauracracy and puts money in the government's pocket. Only if a pill is made (and we are forced to take it) that renders all humans sterile until approved as parents would permits etc make sense--and if we wait for that--then we will probably become extinct.

Exotic animals require special habitats and care. One is required to have all the proper permits and live in an authorized zone in order to keep and care for an exotic animal.

To sell hotdogs from a cart, one has to visit several City Departments and fill out all kind of paperwork. After all the applicable licences are granted and you begin selling hotdogs, you are subject regular as well as random inspections by both the local health department and your cities codes enforcements office.

According to UNICEF some 3500 Children annually die from neglegt and abuse in all developing countries. The victims are usually killed by a parent or relative with which they live. These are some of the facts--so don't sit and judge that girl, she may have been there out if true fear and she may not cooperate with police out of true fear. Why? because abusers almost always get less than 8 years and serve less than 5 even for rape or incest--and many come out looking for payback and the police do little or nothing, including failing to warn the women that the man is now loose. THAT is a very ugly FACT (Indiana changed their notification of prison release program after Lisa's murder--not that it helped Lisa)

To the man's mind, she either stays with him forever or he feels he has the right to kill her and the kids--in his mind, he owns her. and don't even think about involving the police especially in Indiana. They have a history of ignoring abuse, restraining order violations until there is a tragedy.

In the early 1990's Lisa Bianca pressed charges against her spouse for severe abuse and he was sent to prison. Unbeknownst to her, he got early parole and she was not notified. He went to the home where she lived, beat her and dragged her out in the yard, she got away and went to several homes banging on the doors, the neighbors looked through the curtains, but seeing her bloody and half naked they refused to help. Finally when the husband had her on the knees in the mud, her face totally bashed in, and began to bash in her head with the butt of his rifle, someone called the police.

By the time they arrived, she was dead and so much of her head was bashed in, that parts of her face were all over the yard and she was not recognizable. His words--"I'd told her if she ever tried to leave me, I'd kill her."

The real shame is this woman bares some responsibility because she picked him, he had a previous record for domestic violence,.... She is just as responsible for what happened to this child as if she stabbed him herself, because she chose to bear a child with this known criminal.

FYI many women do NOT want to hook up with people who harm them but feel they must to stay alive. It is a known fact (for those of us who have worked with battered women) that many men are predators and once they decide on a woman they do not willingly let go. If a woman does not have the resources to leave, change identities and SS# and move away (and most don't) she is still right there when the man gets out of jail. ' Then she is stalked, tormented and her children threatened if she does not take him back, often those who still try to leave are murdered along with their children (see part 2)

Come back to reality rhohink--I am speaking of the abortion-right to life issue and if some in the government have their way they WILL try to force women to have babies instead of allowing them the choice. As for implications...if you do not want the government demanding people know how to parent and think just wishing "everyone was decent and only had babies when they could afford to and are ready-"-you are the one that needs to come back to reality. My point is--you can make like Pollyanna and nicey nice--but the world is not nicey nice and if we want to get a handle on all the random child abuse, rapes and murders of children--we and the government will have to go a lot further than sighs, wishes and dasydreams about a lovely world. Or do we need to revisit your post about how government is bad---and how everyone should all just get along and sing kumbayah?

there is something a bit premeditated here....is no one going to ask how the kitchen knife ended up in the car to be used on the baby in the first place? Why was such a knife in the car, did Chandler plan to perhaps kill the girl and the kids and panicked when she came back to soon or the older kid took off? Was he tired perhaps, of paying child support? Kitchen knives are usually in the kitchen, not in a car.

The big picture, if this guy had served time in prison for drug possession along with the other offenses he had committed, why, after knowing all this would any woman want to bare his child? The real victims here are the two children, now both children have to grow up knowing their father is a homicidal maniac.

Because I%u2019m willing to bet if this young woman hasn%u2019t learned from this lesson she will undoubtedly hook up with another loser like him.

Women have to start taking charge of their lives and be more cautious with whom they copulate, and not pick any man, because he%u2019s available.
