Timeline In Terror's Wake A look at the major developments following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"There are a new brand of leaders who have emerged over the past year, and I think those are the ones who are more difficult to identify," says John Brennan, former Director of National Counterterrorism Center and a CBS News consultant.
But CBS News has learned the identity of the man who replaced Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as the operations leader of al Qaeda — an Egyptian named Khalid Habib, a man a top FBI official today called "one of the five or six most capable, most experienced terrorists in the world."
Al Qaeda operatives, once scattered, are regrouping in mountainous Western Pakistan — fertile ground for creating what intelligence officials describe as a "never-ending stream of insurgents."
"These are people who make even bin Laden appear moderate. The new generation of jihadists are more radicalized, more intent for dramatic violence," says Paul Cruickshank of the NYU Center on Law and Security.
This generation has, in turn, sparked the growth of as many as 50 associated groups in places like North Africa and Southeast Asia.

In my view the root problem is mixing religion with politics! No matter how well meaning religion and politics don't mix! There should always be a separation between church and state! Almost every country has a mix of different people and religions, so when you have a religious government it will automatically favor those of its own religion and unintentionally discrimate against religions not of it own! There is no way to avoid it! Religion has it place and religion brings order to the lives of those who respond to it, but religion and politics don't mix. Every state government should be religion free and religion neutral to make sure without question that all the people who live in that state are treated fairly. Islamic states by their very nature are dangerous for anyone to live in that's not a Muslim because the faith has too many extreme and radical beliefs and elements! - Reply to this comment

It's already here. The next attack that occurs in the US will no doubt bring severe retaliation against Muslims and people who look like Muslims.

-This is why it%u2019s urgently needed to step over the differences in religions and take the Charter of rights of the United Nations as reference and juridical basis for relationships between nations. Religion should not be regarded as the common trait between people. Each and every human should be respected in his belief. Accommodations should be adopted by different National governments in order to allow people practice their religion in any place, at any time with no limitation. JUSTICE should be the COMMON traits between humans, in order to let it reign on Earth between the Nations.
With the current globalization Africa gets cold feet, and China sneezes. This means that we America Nationals are so depending on the others and vice-versa, that we must step above the local and specific beliefs of People. Speak of resemblance between religions, but not differences. Try to unite and practice the common faith instead of pointing out at differences and demonizing the others. After all, all three monotheist religions are issued from the same land, namely the middle-east - Reply to this comment

What was the justification of briging people from different European countries to Palestine after WWII to occupy the land of those Palestinians by force who had nothing to do with the crimes comited by Hitler?
Why your GOD has promised NON-AMERICANS a land in the Middle East while not promising a single penny for Americans?
Why should we tolerate that UNJUST and RACIST GOD who doesn't care about people's action but only cares about people's race?
We get Oil in cheaper prices from Arabs.
What do we get by supporting the EUROPEAN INVADERS IN PALESTINE?
HATRED,TERRORISM and 9/11!
Why?
Your right and wrong is based on BIBLE which itself is wrong.I am not just making a claim like you always do but always prove my claims with valid reasons.
You can not convince SANE HUMANITY that your GOD has promised a land in the MIDDLE EAST for those who deny his son and accuse his mother of FORNICATION.
You deny HOMOSEXUAL's right of marriage just like OSAMA BEEN-FORGOTTEN and accuse me of being muslim!
You deny women's right to chose abortion just like OSAMA and accuse me of being Muslim!
You oppose Clinton's affair with MS Lewinsky just like OSAMA and accuse me of being a Muslim! - Reply to this comment

Do you deny that there are people out there like this? Should we all sit here and sing cumbaya while people plot to harm us simply because of our culture and religion...simply because we do not oppress our women or exterminate infidels?
They exist, in larger numbers than ever. You may argue that our militaristic actions have galvainzed the enemy, but we did not create the mindset, nor did we create the anger behind it. Doing nothing would not make it go away.
News outlets have a duty to present reality, while they do this with ratings and ad revenues in mind, they are presenting (sometimes with spin) reality. We have a right to know and think for ourselves.
Your anger and illogical rhetorical attacks only weaken your position. - Reply to this comment

- sozefsu, you say "the best solution is to numb it out". What exactly do you mean by that? I hate to defend the media, but they do give us information. If you feel that we should avoid information, some might call that "sticking your head in the ground". What kind of "solution" is that?

- Many people downplay the "clash of civilizations" angle. Anyone who reads the message here by patriotic9 should have no doubt. Someone's gonna get kicked out of Dodge City. This town ain't big enough for these two civilizations. patriotic9 and his kind have no interest in our cute "diversity" and "let's all be friends" misconceptions.

- Terrorism is only possible with media. The fact that we all get up and read these stories every morning ensures that there will be another one the next day. Media empowers individuals, and one thought now can be expressed to the whole world. Terrorism is here to stay and no one can stop it. You may be able to deter it for a time but the best solution is to numb it out, and go on with your life.

My fear is that sooner or later there will be an American version of Al Qaeda against Islam to match the Islamic Extremist version of Al Qaeda! I hope this nonsense ends soon so the world can get back to what was once normal. Islam don't want to see an American type Al Qaeda terrorist group appearing on the scene! Its only a matter of time before it happens and then all-Hell will break loose! I hope American values prevail but I can see things getting very ugly if Islamic Extremist don't chill out!! - Reply to this comment

Sooner or later, it will end. When it ends, Many will find Al Qaeda's ending as an era that had no place in the future.

I wish you were right but that's not the case.
As long as United States continue supporting the EUROPEAN INVADERS IN PALESTINE on the cost of American money and American lives because AMERICANS are GOD-NEGLECTED and the EUROPEAN INVADERS IN PALESTINE are GOD-CHOSEN,Alqaeda will keep on getting recruits.
If Europeans were not brought into Palestine after WWII to occupy the land of those Palestinians by force who had nothing to do with the actions of HITLER,because BIBLE said so,Alqaeda would not get enough recruits to blow themselves up since KORAN said so.
Radical Islam is nothing but a reaction of RACIST and UNJUST CHRISTIANITY.
In order to confront RADICAL ISLAM,we need to destroy RACIST and UNJUST CHRISTAINITY first, which is the mother of all evils. - Reply to this comment
