Will Republican Candidates Seek To Distance Themselves From Bush's Problems?

(CBS)  When he was informed of his re-nomination in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln commented that his party had decided it best to not change horses in the middle of the stream that was the Civil War. It was a theme he drew on in his bid for a second term amid jitters about the conduct and course of the war.

Lincoln's would-be Republican successors today face a different question: Are they far enough across the stream — or so hopelessly stuck in the middle of it — to start leaping off the horse that brought them into it?

As the Washington Post points out today, the GOP presidential candidates remain mostly supportive of President Bush's Iraq policy. But there are plenty of other reasons to worry whether this administration has the legs to prevent them from being swept away with the current.

The string of problems not directly connected with the war doesn't seem to end these days, careening from one bad news story to the next. Most recently the White House has been buffeted by the "Scooter" Libby trial, an admission that the FBI broke laws in gathering personal information on U.S. citizens and, now, growing questions about the firings of several U.S. attorneys.

When added to past problems like the Abu Ghraib prison abuses and the handling of the Katrina disaster, the administration's saddlebags are getting heavier for all Republican presidential candidates. We've yet to see major divisions between the president and his party's 2008 field, but keep your eyes open for signs of a mid-stream switch.


The "Decision Maker" Who Wants To Be "The Decider": John Edwards looks to be taking a page from President Bush's linguistic playbook. Questioned about excerpts in a forthcoming book by Bob Shrum in which the Democratic strategist asserts that Edwards' vote to authorize the war in Iraq was made on the advice of political consultants, the former vice presidential nominee told the Washingtonpost.com: “Political people talk to you all the time. … There is only one decision maker, and that is me.”


Comparisons You Might Want To Stay Away From: Campaigning in New Hampshire today, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made a slightly bizarre connection between chronic diseases and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"There is a lot of terrorism out there that we are afraid of: buildings collapsing and planes being flown into the places where we work and live," Huckabee said, according to a report by The Associated Press. "But I'll also suggest to you that today, chronic disease will take over 2,500 Americans' lives — today. More people than died Sept. 11.”


Two Top Tiers In New Hampshire? A new poll by CBS’ Boston affiliate WBZ-TV and Franklin Pierce College finds Hillary Clinton leading among likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire with 32 percent. Barack Obama comes in a close second at 25 percent and Edwards lands in a more distant third with 16 percent.

Perhaps surprisingly, Al Gore, whose candidacy remains a matter of speculation, received 10 percent support. Is there a draft in here or is it just us? Republican results will be released later today.


Of All The Decades To Be Stuck In …: The '00s are the new '70s — without the great soundtrack. As if we needed another reminder of the similarities between current events and those divisive years, the state of Colorado has joined the nostalgia festival. The state’s legislature this week voted to make John Denver’s "Rocky Mountain High" its second official state song.

Released in 1972, the catchy ditty has long been thought of as Colorado's unofficial song. Of course, it's also been long-associated with the kind of drug use commonly associated with that decade. While there has been a long-running debate about the meaning of the lyrics, Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi recently noted, "no one was high on life in the '70s. They were just high."

When Democrats hit Denver for their nominating convention in 2008, they may want to bring along their own playlist — because this is just the kind of topic that journalists who don't have any real news to cover at these staged events might start talking about.

Hillary Clinton is among the politicians who've been seared by getting too close to certain songs. For her Senate announcement in 2000, one song played for her kickoff was Billy Joel's "Captain Jack" — a song that's also laden with drug references. The New York press had fun with that one.

Sure, it's probably no danger but Democrats would certainly rather present the image of a party singing "Kumbaya" off the same page than a bunch of '70s retreads sitting "around the campfire and everybody's high."

I have been looking and found something that all america has forgotton.Who said this statement: If the personal freedoms of all americans by the Constitution and bill of right are Inhibiting the Government ability to (Govern)that meant control, the people of united states of america..Than we Should look to Limit those GUARANTEES #2.The united states Government CAN'T BE so fixed on our desires to preserve the RIGHTS of ORDINARY AMERICANS #3.I can do any ********* thing i want,I'm president of the united states and you dont forget that.....who am I..... so you all have been following your orders well i want you all to know that i hold all of you accountable for the murders of thousends of americans that have died and wounded in a war we have no buisness being in, you all are makeing large sums of money on americans lives and you all will pay a big price for that someday,heavens gates will never open its golden gates to you.. i hope someday that america and true americans will wake up and see that this washington crime family has sold our country to the highest bidders, china being # 1 and is # 1 in the world now, they are the supper powers of the world now.
