Imams Kicked Off Flight Sue US Airways

(CBS/AP)  Six Muslim scholars who were kicked off a US Airways flight last fall have filed a lawsuit claiming the airline discriminated against them and violated their civil rights.

The imams, most of whom are from Arizona, were returning from a religious conference in November when they were taken off a plane in Minneapolis, handcuffed and questioned. They had prayed on their prayer rugs in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport before the flight, and after they boarded, a passenger passed a note to a flight attendant.

The 39-page complaint, filed Monday in federal court in Minnesota, seeks an undisclosed amount of money for punitive and compensatory damages. Besides US Airways, the lawsuit names the Minnesota Metropolitan Airports Commission, the owner of the airport, as a defendant.

Ahmed Shqeirat, 42, Mohamed Ibrahim, 31, Didmar Faja, 26, Omar Shahin, 45, Mahmoud Sulaiman, 49, and Marwan Sadeddin, 55, all live in or near Phoenix, except Ibrahim, who is from Bakersfield, California.

They said they were handcuffed, questioned by police, surrounded by police dogs and held in a cell with loud music. Two Secret Service officers asked some of the scholars whether they "liked the president of the United States" and if they "would like the president to be harmed," according to the complaint.

"We have a major problem with discrimination against Arabs and Muslims, and airlines (are) not an exception," said the imams' attorney, Omar T. Mohammedi, in a telephone interview. "People have to protect themselves from this type of discrimination."

US Airways Group Inc. has said prayer was never the issue. A passenger reported overhearing anti-U.S. statements, and the men got up and moved around the airplane, the airline said. The men said they had done nothing to arouse suspicion.

The airline released a statement saying that it had not seen the lawsuit, but that its initial position had not changed: that its employees "acted appropriately, and we continue to back the actions of our crew and ground employees in this case."

The airport commission was included in the lawsuit because it employs the officers who removed the scholars from the plane.

Commission spokesman Patrick Hogan denied the claims in the lawsuit, saying "the airport commission believes that airport police acted appropriately in responding to US Airways request for assistance."

I dont trust them as far as you can kick them, all one has to do is read the last three quarters of the quran and others of their holy books to realise that... they try to tell us that we are reading it wrongly that Jihard is not fighting and killing??? hey we are not that stupid... they just slaughter all who will not submit..tooo many verses point to a straight out slaughter and the excitement of killing is there for all to read... but our stupid politicians only take council from muslims, Muslim leaders and Imams.. how stupid can one get... and we all suffer because of their stupidity...

May the flees of a thousand camels infest their arm pits.
Well, I can tell you that if they win this case, we will never fly again... and I know that many others will not fly also...
Come on America wake up, if these men who are suposed to be religious were for real they would praise America for trying to keep everyone safe...as these men are leaders in their society it shows me that they are trouble all round, they are not being peaceful or caring about our fears that their own have caused, they are using mind games, which is a form of terrorism in itself...We have to remember that Mohammad said that a terrorised people are easier to conqure, and we have to remember that non muslims are not counted as the innocent to them.

would really understand if it was the other way around and they wanted to check us and we would say that they were being sensible. We would appreciate that they were also trying to protect us. It appears that everywhere these Imams or Muslims go that they cause trouble.. they dont seem to be able to get along with anyone, even their neighbors. Until non muslim countries wake up Muslims will continue to terrorise us...

WHAT THE **** FOR? LOL

The only thing that intelligent people should want to know about garbage, is where the garbage bin is!
And islam is garbage, mental garbage, that has poisoned the minds of too many unfortunate people for too long!

Islam needs to be tossed out, beginning with islam in the USA!

No mosques!
No korans!
No assembly on behalf of islam!
No symbols of islam!

The people can stay, but their mental poison, islam, has to go!
It is an idiotic ideology WHOSE MEMBERS ATTACK AMERICANS, AMERICA, AND THREATEN FUTURE ATTACKS!

Only traitorous, treasonous and asinine Americans would want to tolerate an ideology WHOSE MEMBERS HAVE KILLED AMERICANS BY THE THOUSANDS! Tsk-tsk

HERE'S MY LETTER TO US AIRWAYS :

First i would like to praise you guys for the service you have provided me over the years. i've done a lot of business with you, and have highly recommended you to others whom were also delighted with your service. I've just read the news regarding you guys being sued about the muslims (or whatever they are). I'm sorry to hear of this situation, and feel you guys did a wonderful job with the situation and making your customer on that flight feel safer. You were just following policy.
I will say however, i would not recommend settling with these people. I'm sure you would've handled the situation them same for any ethic group.
I will be extremly disappointed and will discontinue my business with US Airways and not recommend you guys any more to anyone and do what i can to get the current flyers that i've recommended to stop using your service as well if you settle.

You did what you had to do. And i commend you for that. It's sad that just because they are of a "Certain" ethic race they feel the can make money off of this situation.

Good luck!

Good idea. I'm going to do the same as my co-workers are too. I would'nt want this situtation handled any differently than it was.

Who cares exactly what they are? Their appearence seems to be much similar to those from 9/11. Therefore we all have reason to be a little worried.

"Some of you people are really idiots and need to learn more about islam. Muslim men generally don't wear "Rags" on their heads."

The reference above is nothing more than a technicality and a distraction. The real issue is the muslim threat to the western world.

I am sick and tired of muslims whining because of the way they are treated in this country. If I, a western woman, went to Saudi Arabia, what kind of tolerance and freedom would I get? I would get ARRESTED for doing any of the following:
- Being in public without a male escort
- Driving
- Being in public without being covered from head to toe.
- Approaching, or talking to, a man that is not my relative.

So before you yack about tolerance, learn the meaning of the word, start practicing it towards others, and you'll see the West will do the same to you.
